Comics Summer 2011: "Infested" and "Spider-Island"

And all along I thought I was being the rational one...

Oh well....

:yay:

So apparently Kaine has the ability to mutate after death, as in revived himself as a more spider-y being after Grim Hunt, got killed shortly after by SPOILER => [blackout]Kaine-Gwen[/blackout] in Deadly Foes, mutated again (into his current Tarantula form) and came back to life again. If Marvel is serious about this Ben Reilly nonsense (NONSENSE, I say), I wouldn't be surprised if they tried to use this mutation-resurrection ploy on him, dust be damned.

I kind of already expressed how I've felt about Spider-Island in the ASM thread in the Marvel forums. I don't want to kind of make an exact repeat here because most posters are there too...

I'm just kind of disappointed in the book. Slott has been doing great but he's kind of losing me here. There's still a decent amount of plot to go and I'm hoping things get explained so that this feeling of disappointment is a slight lapse in judgement. Maybe I'm being blinded by the new DC Universe.

I've SEEN Ramos do so much better than he's doing right now. I know Dan can do better than this too. Honestly, what is bothering me the most is that Carlie "figures" out that the Jackal is behind this. I understand Carlie is smart...I get it..I really do. However, hasn't Peter been doing this for QUITE SOME TIME NOW? :wow:

For YEARS posters have gone on about how Peter is being written "not smart". In this case...I REALLY have to agree. I realize they want us to see that Carlie is now Peter's girlfriend but we don't have to sacrifice plot to do that. This IS the Amazing Spider-Man and not the Amazing Carlie Cooper, right?

I just think a lot of things are bothering me lately. The image of Ben Reilly's hood burning. Plot holes. Too much focus on Carlie Cooper. The fact that I want to read more indie books and check out more of the DC books coming out this month. Maybe it's time that I give Spider-Man a break. :csad:

However, sticking around to see how Spider-Island turns out and if Dan and company turn it around hopefully it's a slight lapse in judgement.

So...the "mystery woman" aiding the Jackal turned out to be
the Queen, from Paul Jenkins Spectacular Spider-Man run in 2004.
Thoughts on this? Jackal certainly has a lot of detractors in the fanbase, but has a vocal group of fans, too. But I dont think anyone liked "the mystery woman." Is it a good idea for Marvel to combine two very controversial characters in one storyline? It seems like putting two bullseyes on your back.

I'm glad that character is who it is.

I actually liked the Queen and thought it was a waste to kill her and keep her dead. Especially after flippin' Morlun was brought back twice, but the Queen stays dead?

Makes much more sense why Captain America was chosen to be transformed into Spider King since she's always had ties to Steve. Plus, the last time the Queen, Spider-Man, and Cap where together, it was Spider-Man that was mutated. Now those three are together in a story and its Cap who's a man-spider. Cute.

Well, I for one, am enjoying the hell out of this storyline. I don't know why, but it's just nice to see them EMBRACE continuity instead of ignoring it. Even if its the Clone Saga.

The Jackal thing is the only thing that slightly bugs me. Then again, when someone has cloned himself and others dozens of times, it stands to reason that his death would only ever be temporary. Still, I'd like a little insight on how that situation was remedied.

For my money, this crossover is far better than what I've read of Fear Itself.

I agree... I find that modt of the tie-ins even connect the dots well with the main story...

:yay:

The stuff going on in Herc is pretty cool and it is almost stand alone from the crossover itself...

Anyone else a little irritated that the Jackal seems to be taking a back seat to Queen? I'd rank him much higher in Spidey's rouge's gallery than Ana Soria.

The Jackal took a back seat to Norman Osborn in the Clone Saga, he always does, but he also has something else going on. Jack doesn't like to let other people control his creations.

I don't know why the jackal needed a mastermind, he's the top geneticist in the MU. He's better than Mr. Sinister and the only one in their universe that can outdo him is the freaking high evolutionary. I don't know why he isn't considered premier all by himself.

Exactly. I consider him one of Spidey's top villains.

I mean if you really play it through the jackal could like make evil clones out of most of the avengers all the X-Men (something Mr. Sinister can't do) and then resurrect a crap load of major villains and just take over. That would be a cool Spider-Event or just event in general.

Actually, right now I just want to know how the hell he survived falling from the roof of the Bugle. Unless of course, that Jackal was a clone...or this guy is. This may take a while. I doubt that by the end of Spider Island we'll have seen the end of Miles Warren.

Clone. It's an easy explanation. Way I figure cloners, robots, magic guys and time travellers always have a built in excuse for coming back from the dead built into their job description so if they pop up I really don't even wonder.

But was the guy that died at the Bugle the clone or is the guy we are reading about right now the clone?

Maybe he's letting the Queen do what she wants because she's funding him... and he might have something up his sleeve... you can never trust that guy...

:yay:

I'm betting with people that can make perfect clones, he probably doesn't know. Like the Mauler twins in Invincible. Plus as he can make perfect clones it really doesn't matter at the end of the day.

No one has even addressed this yet, the first "Infested" storyline showed Jackal in his redone 90's self, but since then he has been in his original costume. Was it just artist error, or what?

Continuity is pretty much non-existent these days... even issue to issue.

They even retconned Ned Leeds (from the Shea stadium battle in ASM#149) to be Gwen Stacy (or her clone), which makes no sense because Miles loves Gwen. Best thing to do is ignore the inconsistencies and make your own no-prize explanations. Disregard for continuity is not strictly a BND by-product. It was rampant during the JMS era too. But it does seem to have gotten worse. Continuity is not hugely important to me, but stuff like the Ned/Gwen change is just lazy and inexcusable. Okay, off my soapbox.

I'm a bit behind SI, but have they referenced Jackal's Maximum Clonage death? Personally I think all of them are clones. Four different ones to be exact... the one with the Carrion virus, the one in the 90's clone-saga, the cold "Professor" in the DD/Punisher mini and this current one. The real one still died in Shea stadium. That to me would be the coolest explanation and show how thoroughly and brilliantly Miles Warren planned his own immortality.

No, they havent really mentioned the clone saga at all. I thought it was said in the Osborn Journal that the man that died at Shea was a clone?

The Osborn Journal said a lot of things that have been retconned. Osborn basically admitted it was full of half-truths.

Actually, Dan Slott has been very continuity conscious in his run, picking up threads all over the place.

That said...

I've already "bagged" me issue away so I didn't check again, so I'll say if they had Gwen blindfolded and hanging at Shea in place of Ned, that is something I missed! :O
