Supergirl Supergirl Season 1 Episode 9 - "Blood Bonds" MAJOR SPOILERS

That brings up a good point--considering how insanely overpowered he is in the comics and how removed he was in the Justice League cartoon, have the Supergirl writers said anything about how they're going to handle this? Keeping his identity secret so he can remain DEO is a good move, but can he still do things like phase through walls, turn invisible, or use telekinesis?
Martian man hunter doesn't do telekenisis .

but yeah I think he made that clear since he wasn't able to save their dad or kara's foster father with his powers that his living as a human as hank allow's him to better connect and understand humans. if he's ever doing his true form it'll be short and sparingly which was also what he hinted at with him being able to keep secrets and his and alex joking saying that kara isn't good at that part at all when she said she could which we know that isn't true as has been shown . if he use's his martian powers it'll be covertly so it'll be on the low key and he's best serving as the director of the DEO .

I didn't think so either, but the DC wiki says otherwise (Which I admit might be pre New 52 and therefore meaningless, or post New 52 and therefore not referenced in this show...or something). J'onn won the superpower lottery being a martian.

I wonder if the Oreos will come up...

ok my man or lady, I'll hook you up the only wiki you should look a tall if it's wiki is the wika version and it's called the Dc data base other there are plenty of fansite of the comic's and animated series that are way more accurate which even dc has listed on their sites as links. I work on some of them when I was younger and most of the people do the fan site are far more accurate then the usual wiki but wika however has been far more accurate it maybe cause someone or more there checking for correct info. and DC &marvel Reference Wika . and wiki is still in a state where some that doesn't care about accurate detail to edit it and it mess's up alot of people sadly.

As to j'onn love for Oreo's, we may see it some day.

That would be the one I used.

hmm someone must have screwed up cause that shouldn't be there. it wasn't there before. the other wiki I've seen that happen anyway I've never seen him use Telekenisis most of the Dc alien hero's all use power not fully related to to each other . his pisonic only went as far both mind reading putting image in other heads receiving and projection and altering memory's but he's never done TK it'll be redundant while he has both super strength and Shape shifting which at he use the psionic's to help his shape shifting. oh well.

zenith: J'onn DOES have telekinetic abilities.
yeah well it just mean's I have all the other comic issues where he didn't exhibit this ability him not having made him unique too he already had other power unrelated to psionic's where it's not apart of the same source of power like I said it kinda redundant. It doesn't matter in the end he seems to be reluctant to grand stand with his powers so as I said to navi, J'onn will only use his powers when necessary more likely covertly for the time being.

Is Cat Grant's periodic little pop culture references starting to grate on anyone else? I was already fed up by the time she mentioned Lance Armstrong. This little crutch of the writers is wearing thin.

I enjoy it.

I enjoy it.

So long as it doesn't go hyper-political. me too. And it takes me back to watching cartoons made in the 1940's (Bugs Bunny, Tom and Jerry, etc) as a kid they were just loads of fun. Still enjoy them as a 41-year-old, but now knowing they were filled with many references as they reflect the times.

Pop culture...well they used references from mainly radio as it was the big medium at the time. They could use lines from classic radio programs like Fibber McGee and Molly ("Hello Mert, how's every little thing?" or "Tain't funny McGee" or the overstuffed closet where opening the door causes things to fall) or Red Skeleton (Clem Kadiddlehopper's "Now let's not get nosy, bub" or Junior's "If I do it, I get a whipping...I DOOD IT") or Abbott and Costello ("I'm a BAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAD BOY!")

Also they would have caricatures of the big movie stars of the time.

But also at the time this nation was in WWII and there was propaganda like you would never believe as this nation and its Allies fought the Axis powers. Again I refer to Bugs Bunny and ironically in the cartoon "Super-Rabbit" a deliberate knock-off of Superman, who starred in 17 Fleischer/Paramount cartoons in the 1940's. In the final scene where he lost his super carrots and Cottontail Smith and his horse gained super powers, Bugs said "This looks like a job for a REAL Superman." He enters a phone booth and emerges...AS A MARINE SOLDIER singing the Marine Corps Hymn and going overseas. By the way, Bugs was given a designation by the USMC...Master Sergeant. And frankly I would rather have MSTR SGT Bugs Bunny over General Sam Lane ANYTIME!

Winn and James made peace in the last episode, and James supports Winn, so Winn's snark towards James is no longer necessary, and has therefore become irritating. I understand that conflict drives a story and makes it more interesting, but there are other ways to do it, and Winn's snark just felt like the writers were pretending that that beautiful conversation near the end of the previous episode never occurred. I like to see them working together.

I don't think it would have made sense if James and Winn became suddenly BFFs after one short D&M. I'm guessing Winn, being who he is, was probably bullied by tall, muscular jock types like James all through school and probably has a chip on his shoulder for that type of guy. Winn still helped James break into Lord Technologies when he didn't have to. I think a little minor snark/ribbing is fine/believable.

I loved the Cat/Kara scenes. The writers got the build just right. It starts off with Cat making little quips about "catching planes" and "leap tall buildings," builds to Cat trying to catch Kara out with trick questions about her past, to questioning her devotion to her job as Cat's assistant and then finally giving her an ultimatum. I can imagine that Kara's constant denials would be pissing Cat off, because essentially it's Kara questioning Cat's observation skills. Cat's seen Supergirl in person, and only really started looking at Kara when Cat suspected it was her.

--

I always thought MM's ability to fly was through telekinesis and not through manipulation of Earth's solar gravimetric field (like Supergirl/Superman does). Hank was cool as a cucumber while held hostage because he knows he could phase out of his bonds, impersonate any one of the aliens he saw during the attack and just walk right out. But he needed to see how it plays out before blowing his cover. He's probably taking the time to gather intel on Astra's army. Love that scene with Non and the telepathic alien. That bit with Non losing patience and breaking his interrogator's neck is a throwback to the Richard Donner Non, was pretty awesome.

--

MM may seem to have won the powers lottery with his ability to shapeshift, phase, has telepathy and telekinesis (flight). However, he doesn't have Superman's super strength, speed, healing power, heat vision and freeze breath. And his weakness is fire. As Batman said in JL: The New Frontier. "I have a $100K piece of meteorite to stop the one in Metropolis. With you, all I need is a penny book of matches."

--

I knew Hank was going to imitate Supergirl (or vice versa, if the show runners didn't want Hank to be able to fly). I was hoping they were going with Superman's "amnesia kiss" power from Superman II. Not sure if Supergirl would be able to keep its PG rating if Kara and Cat kissed on screen (one could only hope though and would also launch a million femslash fics).

I don't think the hologram of red tornado's arm had anything to do with the possible bizzaro SG. The room is probably Lord's private lab/man cave. I'm guessing that Lord remembered the design of the android arm when he was shown it and rebuilt it from memory. I wouldn't be surprised if Lord takes up Morrow's work and rebuilds an evil RT to battle supergirl in a future ep.

--

Ugh, 2 week wait till next ep.

it wasn't even a dozen Kryptonian criminals it was 8 at lords labs and one wasn't even a Kryptonian there's always a odd none Kryptonian there like the telepath Astra's husband killed cause he couldn't read J'onn mind and they won't put superman in this unless the city is under siege and is inslaved with the threat of that happening rest of the USA with a wide scale overt attack in number which mean beyond a literal dozen and they'd have to be armed with weapons and vehicles too. here will be no superman til at lest season 5 when the embargo is over with the movies.and kara's will have established her self as a full champion of the city by then as well.

At the prisoner exchange. Their looked to be over a dozen hovering Kryptonians and/or other aliens. Also, yes so far the Kryptonians are only threatening the city. But, how can you not take action? They are not just Kryptonians...They are criminals. He has to get involved. Yes, I know its a Supergirl show and shouldn't need Superman whenever she is in trouble. But, the writers put themselves in this position when they created an enemy who is great in numbers and power. They should have just had Astra and Non if they wanted to keep him out.

I'm loving the complex relationship between Kara and Astra, and how they juxtaposed it with the relationship between Astra and Alura. The way they have developed the storyline has made it difficult to tell which way things will turn out, which is great.

I wasn't a huge fan of the harsh way the depicted Cat in the ep, it didn't gel with the way her relationship with Kara has developed. I don't know why they bothered having her figure it out just to put the genie back in the bottle.

It was interesting that J'onn allowed the trade to take place given how dangerous Astra is, I guess he figured exposing himself could be more detrimental in the bigger picture as I imagine he could have escaped at any time.

I laughed at the interaction between Hank and Kara over their alieness and Kara not being able to keep a secret. :D

The scene where Jimmy and Winn talked Kara out of going ballistic as everything around her was collapsing, was great. There is a nice, easy going chemistry between the 3.

I also liked Winn and Jimmy's subplot investigating Maxwell Lord, and this week saw him drop his guard as relates to playing it smooth, even with Alex. As for who the girl at the end is, I'm leaning towards Bizzaro Supergirl but who knows with this show, there could well be a curve ball.

So is their no Phantom Zone in this show? Since the prisoners were in a ship called Fort Raz? Unless that ship was in the phantom zone.

Here's a list of what Hank/J'onn can do if he chooses (Source: Wikipedia):
The Martian Manhunter possesses a wide variety of superhuman powers, including superhuman strength, durability, flight, regeneration, self-sustenance, shape-shifting, intangibility, invisibility, telepathy, telekinesis, extrasensory input, and optic blasts.

Many of his powers resemble those of Superman, including superhuman strength, flight, invulnerability, and "Martian Vision" (a term designating both the ability to see through solid objects and the ability to project beams of energy from his eyes). Superman once said of him: "He is the most powerful being on the face of the Earth".

J'onn uses his power of shapeshifting for various effects, such as adopting human or monstrous appearance, elongating his limbs, growing to immense size, altering the chemical composition of his body, etc. His default form during JLA meetings and in public is a "human-friendly" version of his actual birth shape.

J'onn can also phase-shift, becoming intangible to pass harmlessly through solid objects, or to phase through people and machines in order to damage them or cause pain. He can also render himself invisible, and he originally acted as an invisible hero or unknown "angel", helping those in need without revealing himself. In the Silver Age story "The Unmasking of J'onn J'onzz" he lost the ability to use his other powers while invisible and was revealed to the world as a Martian superhero, although his civilian identity of John Jones remained a secret.

A powerful telepath, J'onn can both perceive others' thoughts and project his own thoughts. He often acts as a "switchboard" between the minds of his teammates in order to coordinate their actions. The extent of his telepathic abilities is great; several times he has connected his mind to the entire population of Earth, such as in the Trial by Fire story arc,[55] in which he connects to the whole population of Earth in order to find a rogue telepath who has been brainwashing prominent criminals and political figures. He also uses his telepathy for creating illusions, locating other sentient beings, controlling other’s minds, manipulating memory, inducing sleep, travelling on the astral plane, transferring information to people directly, and creating brain blasts and mental shields.

J'onn can absorb energy beams and waves. His telekinesis allows him to move objects with his mind, which he describes as "Martian mind-over-matter". He uses his telekinesis to manipulate and move or push multiple objects, as well as to fly at high speeds and to create a telekinetic push or a telekinetic shield. The inner valves and chambers in his air canals are very dense and greatly enhanced, allowing him to create strong hurricane force winds just by exhaling.

J'onn's eyes can project energy beams, known as "Martian Beams", the exact effects of which have varied in different decades from incendiary effects to concussive impacts to disintegration.

He has demonstrated regenerative abilities, once regenerating his entire body from only his severed head, but with great strain. (Due to the loss of mass, he found it necessary to incorporate new matter from sand.) In his early appearances, he could breathe underwater, such as when he encountered Zauriel in the sea of San Francisco. J'onn also possesses nine senses compared to humans, giving him clearer and more numerable perceptions.

Aside from his superhuman powers, J'onn is also a very capable detective. As Batman mentions in his file, "in many ways, Martian Manhunter is like an amalgam of Superman and the Dark Knight himself".

I've stopped paying attention to anything IGN says that isnt related to video games unless it's fact-based.

Okay, I can see that. Your theory about Winn being bullied is probably spot-on.

Not sure if Supergirl would be able to keep its PG rating if Kara and Cat kissed on screen (one could only hope though and would also launch a million femslash fics).

Oh, that ship is well underway and full of passengers! There are already dozens of Kara/Cat slashfics. I'm surprised by it because I can't see anything like that between them, but it's a wildly popular pairing.

PRAISES/THOUGHTS/CRITICISMS

  • I could watch Supergirl and Astra interact all day.
  • I like the series' take on Krypton.
  • Wow. That torture scene was...actually kind of intense.
  • Olsen and Schott make a good team.
  • I don't know if I totally buy Kara's perspective on Cat and her job, but I did think that it was a sweet, well-acted scene.
  • I get that Kara was in a bad place after her conversation with Cat, and that she was shocked and upset to learn what her friends had done behind her back, but I don't quite buy that she was so upset that she (even momentarily) started to believe that she, Astra, and Non were more similar than she first thought, or that her relatives had the right idea about the human race. This was supposed to be Kara at her lowest point, and I hate to say it, but it wasn't believable.
  • Sorry, but it was stupid on Kara's part to not expect an ambush.
  • So...what happens now between Kara and Astra? How are they going to maintain the bond they've rekindled if Astra continues to do...well, everything she's been doing?
  • I'm really, really, really (!) annoyed that they went back on Cat knowing that Kara and Supergirl are the same person. Every scene they had before then was perfect, and the writers had established a perfectly reasonable excuse for Kara to keep her job before they had J'onn assume one of her identities. Don't open a door if you aren't prepared to walk through it.
  • They somewhat resolved the issue of Superman not getting involved. It's not entirely believable, but it'll do for now.

It was good, but also incredibly frustrating episode. The acting was really good and the story was entertaining, but there were a few things in this one that really bothered me. I'll give it a 7.

I was surprised they took the route they did with Cat & Kara. I figured she would "know"....But, not say anything. Instead they went with the doppleganger in the same room route.

I'm loving the complex relationship between Kara and Astra, and how they juxtaposed it with the relationship between Astra and Alura. The way they have developed the storyline has made it difficult to tell which way things will turn out, which is great.
Loving this as well.

I wasn't a huge fan of the harsh way the depicted Cat in the ep, it didn't gel with the way her relationship with Kara has developed. I don't know why they bothered having her figure it out just to put the genie back in the bottle.
I saw it as Cat possibly being hurt by the fact that Kara didn't tell her in the first place, or that now that she knows, that Kara isn't just bowing to her and telling all...I see it as more frustration and hurt than her going back to her Pilot ep...

It was interesting that J'onn allowed the trade to take place given how dangerous Astra is, I guess he figured exposing himself could be more detrimental in the bigger picture as I imagine he could have escaped at any time.
I agree, that is how I saw it.

I laughed at the interaction between Hank and Kara over their alieness and Kara not being able to keep a secret. :D
I have a feeling there is going to be some great stuff from these two.

The scene where Jimmy and Winn talked Kara out of going ballistic as everything around her was collapsing, was great. There is a nice, easy going chemistry between the 3.
I love how the chemistry between all of the characters is getting stronger. I think that this cast truly enjoy working together and it is showing.

I love the curve balls, but I could see it as a slow development of Bizzaro SG while other villains are brought in along the way.

Very fantastic episode for me..Can't wait to see Bizarro...or Silver Banshee(black eyes)?

I'm still enjoying the show but I'm getting a little tired of Berlanti more or less stealing from another superhero's story because he can't use said hero. Astra is basically Zod with a bit more compassion, and Max Lord is Lex Luthor with hair. The latter I find particularly frustrating because Lord wasn't a villain for a long time in the comics and it wasn't until Infinite Crisis we learned what an evil bastard he was. I'm not saying that they need to follow the comics to a T but they've pretty much just made him a Luthor clone. It doesn't surprise me though; Berlanti did the same thing with Arrow and Batman.

I also don't really see the point in having Martian Manhunter if all he's going to do is hide out and never use his powers. I assume we'll see more of him eventually but it's annoying that he just let himself get captured by Non when he should have been able to give him a good fight.
