I think the number rating system is a really flawed concept (as in 5 stars or something out of 10). I might give Gta IV a 9 out of 10, and I might give AC 2 an 8 out of 10, but it doesn't mean I enjoyed one over the other, thats just a ranking based on the production values, graphics, sounds so on. I think it implies that certain games are better than others... There are so many games that get dismissed because of an average score like a 7, but still have many great, unique gameplay features that are worth applauding... I'd much prefer game reviews without a numbered score.

My vote for game of the year? Batman Arkham Asylum. Now, I am definitely biased, having been a batman fan for as long as I can remember. But on it's own merits, the game is every bit as enjoyable as any of the Splinter Cell games that I have ever played, and the fact that it is Batman just raises the game's appeal factor that much more.

The only criticism of the game? It simply didn't last long enough. I was done with the game in 4 days. I'm guessing it was maybe 12 hours of gameplay if even that. But the game still manages to retain it's enjoyment factor after several playthroughs.

Runner Up: NHL 10. If you're a true hockey fan, then you can appreciate how truly authentic the experience is.

Definitely Uncharted 2 for me. Most fun I've had playing a game since Half-Life 2. :hehe:

This poll is proving my suspicion that B:AA was the most overrated game last year.

Among comic fans, definitely. I loved it, but it certainly had its flaws. But comic fans have been so starved for great comic-based games--especially for Batman, who should be a no-brainer yet has constantly gotten crappy games for years--that we're a lot more willing to forgive its flaws and focus only on the good parts. Of course, in fairness, there are still a lot of legitimate good parts.

Not just comic fans but everyone. It was short, had no replay value, and terrible bosses. They didn't even have include an unlockable skin for a 2nd playthrough. I keep all of my games for a number of years before I get rid of them. But this was the first that I traded in only a few months after I beat it.

To be honest, I would have been more surprised had Batman AA not been a top contender or winner here on the Hype. We have a lot of ppl on here without PS3's and Batman AA is multiplat unlike Uncharted 2, plus....it's a superhero website. Not saying it wasn't overhyped, despite loving the game, I didn't feel it was the second coming a lot of fans of it treated it to be (exact same way with TDK, good movie, not best movie of all time like many treated it like on here).

That's a good point as well. If a good Batman game is something you've really been wanting, well last good one I played was Batman and Robin on Sega Genesis, so it's been a loooong wait. Plus it doesn't hurt that the voices were done by the best Batman and Joker voices the series has had (IMO).

I won't argue most of these points. I held onto the game for a lot longer than I should have before I traded it in. I beat the game twice, played the challenge rooms, but kept it just in case I ever felt like taking a virutal step in Batman's shoes...which I never did again, and parted with it knowing the second game is coming out sooner than later. What was there was good, but it did feel like it lacked a lot of replay value.

The bosses ranged from good to let's just get this over with and move on with the story. I liked fighting Poison Ivy at first as it was a nice realistic way to approach a normal human fighting giant plants...until I realized she just had 2 move modes that would get repeated for the next 20 mins. Same with Bane, Joker, and Croc. Killer Croc did make me get in the moment and really watch my steps for a second (the music really helped with that), but after awhile I realized he was too easy. Bane, and the 50 million other Bane clone sub boss battles they put in were very repetative. Joker at the end was a joke as well.

However, despite all of that....it really was a good game. Definitely a step in the right direction for a new IP. Batman AA had it's flaws for sure, and I don't believe it was GOTY worthy, but it had some really good ideas, a good story, a great voice cast, good game mechanics, and a good setting. Hopefully the second game will fix the flaws the first had.

I still have the game and I don't intend to get rid of it. The fighting system is just pure fun. I occasionally get the urge to beat up a roomful of thugs and pop it in.

Totally agree. Yes, Arkham Asylum has faults but so does every game. And in the case of Batman I, as well as many others, feel that that the good definately outweighs the bad.

Also, replayability is always welcome, but a great game that you only play through once is still a great game.

Overrated =/= "I don't like it"

Except I did like Arkham Asylum. It just gets far too much praise than it deserves. The fact that it's the first good superhero game is given more weight than it should.

Uncharted 2 was outstanding. The great writing combined with top notch voice acting and the most convincing animation I've ever seen in a game really made it feel like something special. But it has to be said that the best parts of Uncharted had little to do with the game aspect of it. So I wouldn't feel totally comfortable voting for it.

Arkham Asylum isn't as pretty as Uncharted 2 and the characters aren't as believable, but the game parts of it are so much more intriguing. There's always some kind of new challenge being at thrown at you or new obstacle to overcome. Plus you have to take into consideration that superheroes have rarely made an impressive transition to the game format. Batman especially so. But Rocksteady came out of nowhere and made anyone who's tried to do the Dark Knight before look like total morons.

I was waiting for Assassin's Creed II. I was sure this was going to be my game of 2009. I was enjoying it for the most part. But somewhere along the line the game lost me. I got bored and I put it down and I haven't picked it up since. I have every intention of getting back to it at some point, but I could never vote for a game that lost my interest to the point that I'm going to have to force myself to finish it.

Dragon Age...is a hell of a game. I'm 35 hours in and outside of the the beginning stuff, I've only completed 3 story missions. And very much unlike Assassin's Creed, it hasn't lost me yet. On the contrary I find it addicting and I'm going to be pretty bummed out when my adventure finally comes to an end. I could go on and on listing what's good about Dragon Age, but what's great about it is that Bioware has proven that you can put out a straight up, honest-to-goodness, RPG-ass RPG and be very successful doing so.

I haven't finished it yet. In fact if I had to guess, I would say I'm just short of the halfway point. But even so, I feel comfortable saying that Dragon Age: Origins was my favorite game of 2009.

The Monastery chapter was more exciting than everything in Arkham Asylum. And then there's the train chapters which outdid the monastery chapter.

Even if you think B:AA had higher peaks than UC2, it also had lower valleys. The Killer Croc level was horrible.

Uncharted 2 certainly has higher peaks than Arkham Asylum, but surely you don't think these two games can be compared on a 1:1 scale? I mean, would you compare Gears of War to Splinter Cell like that?

Arkham Asylum demands a much more deliberate and methodical style of play than Uncharted, so of course Uncharted is going to be more "exciting".

Batman: Arkham Asylum all the way.

You mean "button mashing and playing the game in x-ray vision."

If you're button mashing in Arkham Asylum then you're doing it wrong.

Definitely. The fighting system is a lot more than button-mashing if you want to have any hope of actually being effective. Or surviving for more than 3 seconds into your first fight on hard.

I'm on my 7th run through in Batman AA and see myself playing it until DCU Online comes out. I'm even getting the GOTY 3D edition just to experience it in a different way and earn all the trophies again. Not only was it GOTY for me in 09' but its my favorite game of all time.
