I have to wonder if those bagging on Skyrim have actually tried it out? I definitely don't fit the stereotype. I never had much interest in Role Playing Games. Too much technical **** to deal with as far as I was concerned. The closest game I ever tried in the genre prior to Skyrim was Fable II. I tried the first Fable when it came out, but never finished it. Fable II got more things right in reducing the geeky number calculating and just focused on trying not to remind you it's a video game all the time. Skyrim's world does that.

So reduced screenspace to almost having no UI, randomly generated dragon fights with the dragon attacking local residents as well as you, NPC's with a day/night cycle, the ability to buy your own home and furnish it, consequential law breaking with the ability to pay a fine, go to jail, resist and become an outlaw, bribe or get away with it due to reputation or kill witnesses to reduce or remove the bounty, NPC's commenting on your personal reputation and stats, wildlife that interacts in a realistist manner, bears hunting, elk grazing, rabbits darting about and a whole bunch of other crap specifically desgined to make the game less contribed and more immersive is not as a good as a flexing your muscles and farting?

I don't see how stats remind you it's a game.
They tend to make a game more personal with a motivational target to work towards.

Uhm.... read as "Skyrim does that, TOO."

Picking a non-existent argument with an ally..

More often than not it does add to the game by making you quest to become a stronger character and for better equipment and whatnot but I can see how stats can ruin an experience. It's only ruined one game for me though, I'm still mostly just bitter about Dead Island lol. In a game like that a crowbar should just be a crowbar.

I don't think stats can inherently ruin a game. Like pretty much anything it comes down to how well they're implemented. A big part of it is also about taste. Some people will never, ever like a game that has +5 this or +20 that.

I misread that. I don't agree though.stats usually do the opposite.

You have a divide between RPGers and casual gamers who would otherwise be interested if it wasn't for the usual hallmarks of a RPG game that result in ridicule and disinterest. It IS all in the implementation and I think Skyrim does an excellent job of catering to experienced RPGers and casual gamers.

Am I the only one who thinks of Skyrim fans to pretty much look like this?

But even lamer? I'm sorry to offend you guys but Skyrim really feels like a typical "turn off the lights and turn into an antisocial 12-year old" game. You know, like the most addicted WoW gamers who just can't behave like normal people.

I HATE those kind of people and those kind of games. So I really hope Skyrim won't win the official GOTY award. Attack me now for all you want, this is what I think.

Why, though?

I think, for the most part, Elder Scrolls and Bethesda games in general have escaped the stereotype imagery within gamers. WoW still has it.

COD and Gears has the "Bro Dudes" thing, COD way more. Batman, by virtue of being a comic book game, probably has the comic book nerd stereotype attached to it.

But, Skyrim...I guess I didn't think so. I'm guessing it's because there's Dragons?

I wouldn't agree with that either. Most hardcore players will notice the massive imbalance and exploit issues. It party excusable because it's a single player game. Oblivion for example had to be almost completely overhauled by modders because the leveing system is fuber. Here, it still has many exploits, such as un-killable characters allowing you to spam away and level skills.

If a competitive RPG such as Guild Wars had this type of stuff, it would break the game completely. It's why Bethesda and Bioware are massively over-rated. (Bioware especially the Old Republic will probably be massively imbalanced compared to Guild Wars 2, which will be awsome).

Oh, I want to take back alot of what I said there. I admit, it was a stupid generalization on my part. So I'm sorry guys! I guess I had a bad day or something

Ridiculous. You can't blame Skyrim for offering way more content than most console games released this year. And it's playing more off of the ever-popular Lord of the Ring's franchise success more than it is WoW's.

A 'turn off the lights and turn into an antisocial 12-year old' game? If there's a released this year along these lines, it's Modern Warfare 3. What are you willing to bet causes the bigger social problem, Skyrim's one-off 30 - 50 hour affair or the hundreds upon hundreds of hours people have been sinking into the CoD franchise since 4's release? THAT's the closest thing to the WoW experience on consoles, not a single-player RPG.
Well said. Skyrim is great because......IT'S GREAT. The stereotypical nerd subject I keep hearing aobut is quite annoying, IMO. Not everybody is liek that, and fgns of Skyrim (from what I've seen) are not like that. Skyrim (and the Elde Scrolls series as a whole) deserves A LOT of praise. It's obvious a lot of passion has been put into it, which is why, IMO, it's game of the year.

And SKyrim being GOTY is no surprise to me, tbh. Bethesda has proven themselves time and time again.

Yea, Bethesda just keeps hitting home runs. They truly are one of the absolute best dev teams the industry has ever had

1. Mortal Kombat (Loved the story mode and return to super bloody, super 2D roots)
2. Batman Arkham City (Because Rocksteady is god and this game RULES!)
3. Saints Row the Third (Why it's so freaking fun!?)

I'm still not done with arkham city, revelations and dark souls, but based on what I've played so far, I'm kinda surprised to say that deus ex is still in the lead for me

50+ hours in and I'm comfortable voting for Skyrim.

So far I would say i'm enjoying Batman Arkham City more so than Portal 2 and Skyrim.
Still, enjoyed Shogun 2 more so thats still my over-all GOTY so far.

I've gotta admit, I haven't really gotten into Skyrim. I'm not saying its a bad game or anything, just that I personally don't see the big deal and its been hard for me to really want to play it.

Skyrims cool on first impressions. Then you start seeing problems with AI, game-balance and bugs as you go on.
There are also some general design problems that allow you to exploit the game when it attempts to be linear. Like non-killable NPC's.
