Not many people seemed interested in a tourney, so I just did the usual poll.

2014 has been a pretty disappointing year for a lot of gamers. Many huge delays. An unacceptable amount of broken releases. And more than a few high profile disappointments.

However, there have been some bright spots as well. I feel like this is the year where the "middle class" of games struck back. Where the AAAAA games disappointed, games that would normally be overlooked like Wolfenstein, and Shadow of Mordor, The Evil Within, and Lords of the Fallen delivered.

It was also a great year for independent developers. Whatever you think of them, games like Shovel Knight, Broken Age, The Banner Saga, and Goat Simulator to name a few, were huge successes.

So, what was your favorite game of this year?

Or better yet, what's your top ten?

Man, 2014 was such a huge disappointment compared to how good last year was. I guess.....South Park? That's probably the one I got such huge enjoyment out of playing. Well, that, Mario Kart, and Super Smash Bros.

Ya this has been a disappointing year. One of the most so in a long time. Last year had The Last of Us, and GTAV, the years before had some great gems. This year has had a few superb games but nothing mind blowing. But it seems all those delays leading into a great year next year. 2015 I think will have multiple must have titles.

But I would say my top three games would be:

1. Dragon Age Inquisition
2. Dark Souls II
3. Shadows of Mordor.

Soapy what was your GOTY?

I'll go against the grain and vote for the Xbox One/PS4 version of GTA V. :o

I've still got to play Sunset Overdrive but my top two are looking like Dragon Age Inquisition and Wolfenstein in that order.

For me, the best thing a game can do is get me invested in the characters, their story, and what becomes of them. I've got more than a few unfinished games kicking around, because I stop caring. It's why Walking Dead Season Two takes the cake this year.

This has been one of the tougher years for me to pick a GOTY. My X1 and PS4 have gotten a TON of use this fall. Without giving it too much thought and just going off how much fun I had, I'd probably have to say Shadow of Mordor.

I know there's no chance of it winning on this board, but I'll vote for Bayonetta 2 anyway. Easily the best game released this year.

Alien Isolation easily. I haven't played most games on the list but I'm loving every bit of the game so far.

This was a weak year in gaming. I honeslty dont think Ive played anything that I could say is GOTY worthy. Maybe Last of Us Remastered but that technically doesnt count

Probably Shadow of Mordor for me.

1. Shadow of Mordor
2. Disney Infinity 2.0: Marvel Superheroes
3. Infamous: Second Son
4. Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare
5. Watch_Dogs

I have not played a lot of the nominees this year for various reasons, but based on what I did play, my vote goes to Far Cry 4.

I still need to play Bayonetta 2, Mario Kart 8, Far Cry 4, D4, Donkey Kong & Dragon Age; but as of now my list is:

1. Super Smash Bros for Wii U
2. Sunset Overdrive
3. Plants vs Zombies: Garden Warfare
4. The Wolf Among Us
5. The Walking Dead Season 2
6. Titanfall
7. Strider
8. MGSV: Ground Zeroes
9. Watch_Dogs
10. Destiny

I don't expect Smash to be kicked off the top spot, I'm addicted to that game right now & see myself playing it for a while. Destiny will probably stay at the bottom spot, what a disappointment.

Before I get to my actual list, I would like to give a special honorable mention to Super Mario 3D World. I give this an honorable mention because I don't want to put it on my actual list because the game didn't come out this year, but if it had, it would have been very high on my top ten, if not the number one spot.

Last year, I had this to say about 3D Land on the 3DS:

This is the game that single-handedly got me to buy a Nintendo 3DS, and if that was the only game I ever played for it, I think it still would have been worth the purchase.

A lot people have grown a bit cynical about Mario in recent years, and probably rightfully so. Those "New" Super Mario Bros. are honestly some of the most half-assed games I've seen come out of Nintendo, and they released a bunch of them in a relatively short amount of time. Combine that with all the spin-offs and such, and it's easy to see why people have grown weary of Mario. Super Mario 3D Land on the other hand, undoes all of that. At least for me.

This is going to be a bold statement that I'm sure might ruffle some feathers, but 3D Land is, in my opinion, the very best of the 3D Mario games, and easily my favorite game in the series since Super Mario World. It's the only 3D Mario game that really captures the feel, the thrill, and the pure joy of the older classics. Nintendo stripped out all of the tutorials, the hub worlds, the story, missions, all that **** that slowed down the other 3D Mario games and took it back to basics, and it's all the better for it.
You could swap around a couple of words here and there, and that would be exactly how I feel about 3D World.

I don't know what else to say really, this new style of 3D Mario has an incredibly strong appeal for me, whereas I mostly regarded the 3D games of the other style with mild indifference.

Anyway, on to my list:

Wolfenstein: The New Order

Wolfenstein is one of those games that you really love when you're knee deep in it, but once it's over you're just like, "Yeah... that was okay I guess." I have an inexplicable fondness for the Wolfenstein series, but even I would admit that the only reason this game rates is less about the quality of this particular game and is more just demonstrative of what a weak year it's been. Don't get me wrong, I really did enjoy the game, and I do think it does some interesting things here and there. However, by and large, it was a marginally above average game and with stronger competition probably wouldn't have stood out as much.

Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn

Final Fantasy XIV is probably the best theme park-style MMO in existence. It takes what World of Warcraft does, and polishes everything to a glossy finish. Playing with a controller feels surprisingly smooth and intuitive.

It's super impressive how the new lead developer was able to rescue this game and turn it into something great. Cool world, great classic Final Fantasy feel, overall it's a pretty fun game.

Dark Souls II

Dark Souls II was a disappointment after the first two excellent games. This was clearly From's "B" effort, while Miyazaki was working on Bloodborne. The enemy encounters weren't as intelligently crafted as the previous games, and the boss fights, one of the main pillars of why people play these games, were overall kind of a let down. Very few were memorable, and way too many relied on adds rather than good combat design for challenge. Having said that, it was a decent game overall and an impressive debut from first time director Yui Tanimura. I look forward to see what he might do in Dark Souls III if he gets to direct again.

Shadow of Mordor

Shadow of Mordor is another game like Wolfenstein, that in a stronger year probably would have flown under the radar. The one thing this game has going for it though, that elevates from "adequate" to "holy ****, this is actually kind of awesome" is the Nemesis System. Without the Nemesis System, there's no way anyone but Lord of the Rings nerds would have given this the time of day.

More than giving this particular game an edge to separate it from the pack though, the Nemesis System might actually be kind of a game-changer in the years to come. It's really easy to see how you could apply similar systems to tons of different open world games and many of them would be better for it.

Jazz Punk

Playing Jazz Punk for the first time is a lot how I might imagine a dream going if you fell asleep after watching a classic Bond marathon, eating some gas station sushi, and then smoking salvia.

I really don't think there's a lot I can say about the game without the game's insanity rubbing off on me and making me sound crazy. Just know, that it's a very strange and unique experience. It's one of the most bizarre games I've ever played, but easily one of the funniest. . Actually it's not even so much a "game" as it is a delivery mechanism for a bunch of really dumb jokes and sight gags, but it's exceptionally good at doing that. Attempting humor in games is very hard, and these guys mostly knocked it out of the park.

Shovel Knight

Shovel Knight is a fantastic tribute to the 8-bit era of gaming. There have been a ton of similar games though. What makes Shovel Knight so special? Well, it's because where those other games are all style with little else to back them up, Shovel Knight is actually a great game. It doesn't look retro for the sake of it. It would remain a great game regardless of what art style was used. It's just really fun.

Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze

Retro's first stab at a Donkey Kong Country game didn't really grab me. I'm not sure why. I liked playing it for the most part, it all seemed adequately polished and well put together, but it just seemed to lack something. Tropical Freeze on the other hand, I've enjoyed a great deal more. It absolutely stands shoulder to shoulder with the first two classic games. As someone who totally loves the original games, I can't give it much higher praise than that.

Plus David Wise came back to do yet another outstanding soundtrack. That alone would be enough to earn a top ten spot for me.

Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes

Is Ground Zeroes a paid demo? Is it a chunk of Phantom Pain they greedily carved out to sell it to us separately? Or is it its own distinct product? Is it a ripoff? Or is it a good value? I think the only correct is answer is probably "all of the above".

I think everyone can agree that, if nothing else, Ground Zeroes is a weird thing. Taken at face value it's a one hour game, and not even worth the already pretty low price. However, if it's a one hour game, why have I put like fifteen hours into it? Now, this is going to be a kind of philosophical quandary. Kind of a "chicken and the egg" type of scenario. Have I played the game so much because I'm subconsciously trying to justify what is admittedly a very thin game by wringing as much out of it as I can, or have I played it so much because it's a legitimately good game and fun to play? The world may never know.

Not that it matters anyway. No matter the "why", the end result is still the same: I played the game way more than I expected to and had a great time doing it. Bring on The Phantom Pain!

Bayonetta 2

Do you hate video games? Do you hate fun in general? If so, stay the hell away from Bayonetta 2, because Bayonetta 2 is video game-ass video game, and it's fun as ****.

I really wish I had more to actually say about the game because I like it so much, but in truth, Bayonetta 2 doesn't do anything dramatically different than the first one. It's just a much tighter and more polished version of what you already played in the first game.

I know there's no chance of it winning on this board, but I'll vote for Bayonetta 2 anyway. Easily the best game released this year.

When I began to collect my thoughts about my game of the year list, I fully expected and intended to have Bayonetta as my number one. However, another game, an unexpected game came to the fore. Sorry to sell you and Bayo up the river Tron, but my GOTY nod belongs to a different game.

Mario Kart 8

When I sat down and started to compile my list of my top ten games of 2014, I figured Bayonetta was locked at number one and Mario Kart would sit somewhere in the lower portion of the top half of my list. As I thought more about it though, I began to realize there hasn't been a single other game from this year that I've sunk more time into, and there hasn't been any game that I've enjoyed playing more than Mario Kart.

I know there's not a whole lot of consensus on what the best Mario Kart is, everyone has their favorites, but for my money this is it. Not only is it the best Mario Kart game, but that puts it pretty high in the running for best kart racer of all time. In my experience, I would say second best. Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing Transformed is still number one for me. That doesn't really matter though, the point is that Mario Kart 8 is a top tier kart racing game.

The first thing anyone will notice about Mario Kart 8 is that it's a damn good-looking game. Probably the best on the Wii U. I know some of you might roll your eyes or snicker at that statement, maybe make a "tallest midget" joke or something like that. Well, you know what? **** you. Most of the games I played this year that really wowed me visually, take one guess which platform I played them on. It wasn't the PS4. It wasn't the Xbone. It wasn't even the PC. It was the damn Wii U. Mario Kart 8, Super Mario 3D World, Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze, Bayonetta 2, all of those games look absolutely amazing, and Mario Kart might be the most amazing. It just goes to show that good art will trump raw horsepower every time.

The driving in Mario Kart 8 is tight and responsive. There's a decent variety of items, all of them fun to use, although I do feel there are two or three too many "comeback" items. The tracks are mostly excellent. There's only a couple that I outright don't like, and there are some that I like a little less than others, but the vast majority of them are a total delight to race through.

I feel the online play deserves a special mention. Nintendo has a reputation of being completely clueless about anything involving the internet, and trust me they still have a very long way to go, but in the case of Mario Kart at least, they absolutely nailed it. Disconnects have been exceptionally rare, and any sort of rubber-banding or hiccups during an actual race have been even more rare still. I've played a ton of this game online, and truly it's been one of the smoothest online gaming experiences I've ever had.

The DLC for this game has also been really, really good. Both in quality as well as from a value for your money perspective. Think about Call of Duty map packs for a second. Fifteen dollars for three maps. MAYBE they'll throw in a new weapon if you're lucky. For twelve dollars in Mario Kart you get sixteen tracks, eight new characters, as well as some new colors for a few of the characters that were already in the game. Also worth noting is that a lot of the DLC tracks and characters are themed around non-Mario/Donkey Kong IPs, which they've never done before. That's pretty novel, and hopefully a sign of things to come in the next version of the game.

Is the game perfect? Absolutely not. There's a pretty severe lack of single player content when you compare it to Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing Transformed. The flying and water sections of the maps also feel kind of lame compared to the aforementioned game as well. They changed battle mode and it straight up sucks now. I never really enjoyed the mode all that much to begin with, but it's still worth mentioning. There are also way too many baby characters, as well as clone characters. Some people took issue with them including all of the Koopalings as well, but I personally didn't mind that. Regardless, it's pretty clear Nintendo was trying to pad out the roster. Not sure why they didn't use better characters though. Where's Birdo? Where's Wart? Where's Mouser? What about some Donkey Kong side characters?

Some of those flaws are absolutely worth talking about, but a lot of it is pretty nitpicky to be honest. From front to finish Mario Kart 8 is a really fantastic game, and to be honest I'm as surprised as anybody that I would select it as my game of the year, but I guess it's appropriate considering what a weird year it's been.

Hmm... That ended up being much longer more reviewy than I intended. If you read all this crap, sorry for wasting your time.

Games that were in the running, but didn't make the cut:
  • Kirby: Triple Deluxe
  • Bravely Default
  • Dragon Age: Inquisition

lol, usually when you nominate a subject for an award, it is limited to like 5-10 nominees, not like 20...

There's no award to be given. It's just people voting on what they like.

infamous,cod advanced warfare,mario kart 8..all brilliant
just bought captain toad too..seems quite fun in nintendo's cutesy way!

yeah but I think you know what I mean don't you? for an "of the year" sort of thing to win (I think the word here is still award) like this, the amount amount of titles people have to choose from is usually like 5-10

I've placed my vote, anyway.
