OK. I have some experience with this. Seeing a specialist is a good idea, but, please, don't see one who is knife happy. Surgery of any sort should be seen as a last resort. What works for one person may not work for others. I focused on strengthening my abdominal muscles. Fortunately, I was never very heavy and that helped. Eventually, I got a cortisone shot (which I'm not really recommending) that got me through the healing process (disk protrusion) and I've had very little problems since. Maybe once a year, I'll get some sciatica and as long as I rest for a day, it's usually okay (I will take some advil.....naproxin is a little stronger, but if you are depending on anti inflammatory drugs, that's a problem). Do you have access to a pool or gym with one? If so, walking in a pool about mid chest high can be a huge help. Walk forwards and backwards (walk always facing in the same direction if you get what I mean) for about 20 minutes each day. It may take a month or a little more, but I'll bet you'll start feeling better. I know you are very busy, but take the time to take care of yourself.
Best wishes.
