I've ridden the NYC Subway my whole life.

I cannot tell you the times I've either:

Brought attention to someone unconcious inside a train car or out on the platform.

Got a cop to come look at a situation that was violent or looked like it was about to.

Helped someone who had been attacked.

But about three trains worth of folks, the conductors and whomever is manning the security cameras on a busy Sat. summer night in the Barclay's center subway station (You know... THE HUGE ASS Basketball stadium/concert venue?) were happy to see a guy struggle keeping an obvious violent thug restrained.

And now he's free to do it again.

I hate S*** like that. A few years ago, we had police helicopters circling the neighborhood looking for someone who had broken into a house. I usually take the dogs out at about 4AM for a walk, but when I opened the front door, there were police vehicles with floodlights and I figured "hey, we can walk tomorrow". I go back into the house, go into the bedroom and say to my wife "There's a bunch of cops out front". The dogs start growling and she says "I think someone's in the backyard". We have a large sliding glass door leading to the backyard patio so I run out there and just about that time someone jumps over the fence. I said "No Fing way Mother......" and we got in a tussle. He was more interesting in getting away than creating a disturbance and I was more interested in getting him out of the yard and away from the house than killing him so we had an unspoken meeting of the minds and he got out of there asap. They ended up catching him and I testified against him. He was convicted. They had police dogs and, man, those things are not to be trifled with.

Hope you're doing okay.

That’s terrible @KRYPTON INC. :csad:

Sorry to hear you had to go through that just trying to do an honest day’s work. Hope you’re ok now.

@KRYPTON INC.
Really sorry to hear what happened to you. At least you had the means to fight back and subdue them.
Can’t believe it took so long for anyone to help…

That stinks. At least you were able to defend yourself. :( Glad you're okay.

Thanks for the concern everyone.

I appreciate it a lot.

When my shift ended I went to Barclay's and talked to Transit cops then they drove me to meet detectives in Coney Island to do an interview and look at surveillance video.

So I was just mugged on the subway folks.

At Barclay's center station on the end of the platform waiting for the D train. Dude comes up to me and motions to his wrist. I'm like "Can I help you?".

Sucker punch. Doesn't hurt really. Doesn't make my record skip. Get into a scrum. Dude attempts some kind of headlock/guillotine choke. Funnily enough I literally say to myself in my mind "Welp... I guess I gotta switch to jiu-jitsu." S0 I do. Get my head out of the lock and get his right arm in a half assed lock of my own and then I get a mount on him and put my right hand around his throat.

People... To say I'm pissed at the entire city of New York now is an understatment.

I had to hold that position for a very long time. At a minimum ten minutes. Two trains pulled into the station one after the other and NO ONE DID A DAMN THING.

I screamed to high heaven "SOMEBODY CALL THE POLICE!"

No one did anything. Dude who attacked me by the way was a total sociopath. He starts making it like he was the one that was attacked. I STILL gotta go to work and no police are showing up. He's resting on his back and I'm expending energy trying to keep his ass down. This can't continue on my part for much longer.

Luckily another person finally came to my side and I was confident I could get up. Muthereffer got to go but guess what? Still a successful mugging. I wear a satchel everywhere that got all my stuff in it. Luckilly my phone and some other stuff spilled out but the satchel itself and all my money etc. are no where to be seen. I think this guy worked with somebody else who absconded with my bag. Plus, when I let the guy up I was in no position to go looking for my **** anyway since I had to worry if this guy was gonna try somethign again.

Still only 15 minutes late to the job because that's how it is for the working man in the USA these days. Gotta get mugged but also gotta get to the job to do your shift.

This sucks & is absolutely terrible to read, I'm glad you were able to at least able to defend yourself & didn't get seriously injured even at the cost of some money & possessions, at least you didn't get shot, stabbed or badly beaten.

It's sad to read that 2 trains past & none of exiting/entering passengers or staff within earshot would respond to your calls of distress, it highlights just how ****ty some human beings can be that none of them in this day & age would even whip their phone out & notify the authorities that there's a potential mugging in progress. Imagine how ****ty it would have been had the attacker actually pinned you & you were calling out for help from the bottom & been ignored.

Doesn't shock me that this sort of thing would happen in New York, no offense to any New Yorkers.

I'm surprised you even went to work, given the circumstances I'd have been far too angry to do any sort of job & I'd have probably given myself a heart attack or stroke working out a shift, while mentally stewing over what had just happened.

I remember how I felt after my altercation. The guy was much taller than I am, but there was just no fear at the time. I was just pissed off and amped up. I wasn't really thinking anything at all. That slowly dissipated over the next hour. I didn't leave the house for work until I knew he'd been caught even though I was pretty sure he wasn't going to be coming back.

To @C. Lee and @Black Narcissus :

Saw this on Imgur's front page last night. My pops' favorite sex symbol of all time probably. From 1972's Bluebeard.

One of my stops on that time-machine, man. Also, been on a Catherine Denueve wave myself.

I also thought about making a Starlet pic thread from the 50s-70s. But gotta ask the Don @C. Lee for a favor, but I don't want to owe the hype mob any favors. eh.

Good choice. I recently watched her again in THE HUNGER.

I recently rewatched her in 'Repulsion' and 'Belle de Jour'. Belle de Jour is about a housewife who becomes a call girl, just cause she is bored. Tis' done in that fancy french new wave type of pompous way about it. Luis Bunuel was an over rated ass of a director, but this is one of his good ones, which wasn't many imo.

@KRYPTON INC. while I am happy you are ok.... I believe we need to move on. Assemble the crew.

This should be a good hunt... Any leads?

Some years ago, I assembled a group of people. We traveled around Mexico and righted the wrongs we saw (We also drank a lot of Mezcal in Oaxaca). A Jewish woman from NY, a black dude from Chicago, and me; sort of a half and halfer from LA. Our name was "The Odd Squad" and I'd be willing to get the band back together if needed.

I just received a call from the Detective I met in Coney Island. He kindly was following up on me.

Good news... Monitoring the dispatchs at the time reveal four people made 911 calls to report my situation.

Bad news... ONLY four people called 911. This was a platform in a major hub of the subway system right below a sports area in NYC on a Sat. night relatively early. It was far from empty.

Kudos to those four individuals for doing the bare minimum but whatever rationales that anyone can come with to absolve the people that looked at my situation and heard my pleas for someone to go get a cop or a MTA worker and did nothing will feel like very weak tea.

Anyone that heard me or saw me did nit have to join me in restraining a violent individual. They had the task if they had a conscience to simply walk up some stairs and get a station agent in the booth. There was no danger to anyone. I had him restrained. I had him restrained for twelve minutes at least. I had him restrained when three trains full of people came and went on that platform and no passenger or MTA employee apparently thought it their business to intervene at all.

That's a **** ton up people folk.

I am a born and bred New York City boy. My mother's family came here in 1917. My father arrived in 1955 from Puerto Rico. I was raised to be both aware of danger but also not to have a hard heart. In the past twenty years on my current job of being the night concierge at a building in SoHo I have seen a lot of human ugliness and suffering not only on the job but traveling the subways. The vast majority of the time when I could help someone that needed it I have. That could have been anything from letting women into the lobby because a dude was stalking them to getting medical attention to people unconscious, sometimes next to pools of their own bodily fluids, blood, vomit etc. Sometimes it meant physically doing something. Stopping a beatdown, handling a person that is mentally unwell via inherent issues or because of drugs or alcohol.

Despite that I honestly in my over 40 years, never thought of New Yorkers in the cold hearted caricature that I am well aware exists across the country, especially among those whose life experiences do not include life in any of the country's bigger cities. Are New Yorkers brusque I would say? Yup. The pace of city life is quick, on the go. In NYC it can seem like even the homeless have appointments to keep. My answer to people's impressions of NYC was usually "We're not rude or uncaring... We just got a lot of **** to do."

Perhaps that was my projecting my own self image on my hometown?

I've only been to NY a couple of times and found people to be very helpful. I found them very approachable and willing to help with directions, restaurant recommendations, etc. I also found one woman in particular to be quite resourceful and suspect she isn't alone.

I was coming back from a wedding somewhere on Long Island. They owned a rather large place with an apple orchard in a place called Fort Salonga?? Anyway, I took some train back to see my sorta girlfriend who lived in Brooklyn. I was rather tired because of the night before and wasn't in the mood for taking any crap. I had a black leather jacket on (think Lords of Flatbush), levis, and aviator shades. So, about 3 white dudes (obviously sorta rich bullies) get on the train and start trying to harass and intimidate people. I could hear them coming. I was sitting in the aisle seat and some woman gets up, sits in the window seat next to me, grabs on to my hand with hers, and puts her head on my shoulder. They walked past me and just kept walking without saying a word. She doesn't move until we got off at some station named Jamaica??? and went on her way. She never said a word to me. Damndest thing I ever saw. LOL.

So apparently there's a debate on whether we should use Squad or Gang now for our group of friends in the slang game.

@KRYPTON INC.

Does that story surprise you or is that something some wise woman in NY would do?

If only she'd known how great I am, she would never have let go. :funny: (EDIT: Anne-Marie would have been totally cool with it if I brought her home).:D

They are PoC so, it should be "Gang". :whatever: I personally think anytime you use either word, there should be an adjective preceding it. So, if it's "odd" or "mod", you use "squad". If it's "bang" or "fang", you use "gang".

I thought everyone knew that......
