World Superman: Doomsday DVD Review

Anyone watch the New Frontier Teaser Reel??

Now that is something I cannot wait for!

I finally watched Superman: Doomsday last night..........and I was pleasantly surprised!!!

Initially, I was a bit hesitant to watch it......after hearing that Supes and Lois were in a romantic relationship without Supes telling Lois he is Clark first.

However, cuz I'm a sucker for anything Superman related.....I decided to give it a view.

All I can say is...........THIS IS THE MOVIE SR SHOULD HAVE BEEN!!!!!!

Superman: Doomsday covered several similar themes as SR....be it Supes and Lois' Romantic Relationship.....Superman's "Absence" and subsequent "Return"...........a world/society/Metropolis that "moved on" after Superman's departure and their reactions upon his return.......

However, Superman: Doomsday handled all of those issues MUCH BETTER than SR..............

Uhhh ... look up the word, "whining."

Last time I checked everything I've written in this thread has some thought backed up with it.

Unfortunately, can't say the same about anything you've written. Opinions are fine -- you're justified to have them ... but you have to back it up. Just saying they should have cameos or more superheroes without giving any good reason for WHY that makes any iota of sense, esp. in this film -- won't cut it. And now you say I'm whining (?) -- sorry dude, try again.
Just because you can back it up doesn't mean you are not whining. IT'S A CARTOON PEOPLE. NOT EVERYTHING WILL MAKE SENSE. GET OVER YOURSELFS. What I hate is fanboys who are so nitpicky about every little detail. Like I said before, it's no big deal, you're the one that wants to keep aruging.

Sorry, I don't mean to be rude.

You said everything I wanted to so eloquently. ;)

I was really disappointed but to be fair that may be because I had high expectations for the movie and couldn't wait for its release. Oddly enough, my expectations for Marvel's Doctor Strange were really low and I enjoyed the movie A LOT! Based on the title, I assumed there would be more Doomsday. Doomsday was everything I had hoped he would be violence and all but he was dead before the half way point of the movie. I would have had the events leading up to and including Superman's death on one film and his return on another. I agree with everyone else, a movie based on this classic storyline seriously needed cameo appearances from other heroes. Did enjoy the interaction between Lois and Martha Kent. All in all it wasn't bad but I need to watch it again because I'm still not sure it was any good.

I thought it was well-done. The characters were well fleshed out. It actually did make you feel sympathetic towards the city and those close to Superman. And Lex...well, he was crazy! <--like he should be. Plus, I've always been a fan of Corporate Lex...real-estate scheme Lex is a 70's thing!

Damn!
After watching Superman/doomsday
I think it should have been this animation movie that was made into live action and released instead of superman returns
It would have been the greatest superhero movie ever.

What better challenge for a superhero to return from the dead and reclaim his title as the greatest superhero of all time.

Fantastic movie. Absolutely loved it.
The one thing I found rather weird was Lex's many insanely homo-erotic lines towards Superman/Clone Superman.
But even though I knew this was going to be a more adult oriented movie, I was shocked by how gruesome it was, including everything that involved Toyman. That dude and his doll were cree-py :wow:

Oh, and Kevin Smith's cameo was hilarious. I had to rewind it a couple of times to make sure it was really him :D
Indeed!
Kevin smith cameo was hilarious.

also loved the movie.

definitely what SR should have been. loved lois. loved lex (although his homoerotic straddling of superman clone was a bit much).

definitely took some getting used to for the new voices but marsters nailed lex.

hated superman's cheekbones.

S:D is a really dramatic, exciting movie. I was gripped throughout. Usually animated shows make it harder to care about the characters as they are not flesh and blood, but I was really willing Superman on here against Doomsday.

Although there are a lot of great screen Luthors already (Rosembaum, Hackman, Spacey, Clancy Brown), James Marsters and the animators create a very memorable and effective version here.

Adam Baldwin as Supes had little to do other than make cries of pain. He seems to have been picked because he's famous and he sounds like the previous Superman voice actors. It's a shame, because going with Marsters added a new take on Lex and the same could have been done with the Man of Steel here. A Brandon Routh-type voice would have been great. Kyle MacLachlan is a good idea for First Frontier.

Anne Heche was fine as Lois, but again, she clearly has a Dana Delany voice. Go for a completely different voice next time.

The problems are, really, that it's scaled down so much from the original story. It's simply not epic enough. When Supes and Doomsday fight on the streets, sure it's very early in the morning, but there are very few onlookers. The entire world should be watching.

The music, also, is very generic and not very rousing or heroic.

Finally watched the movie this weekend and in my opinion, the first half of the movie sucked, actually the movie sucked up until Supes saved the cat. Lois is sleeping with Superman, but doesn't know he's Clark?!?! To kill Doomsday, Superman rockets him into space and then back to Earth and in the middle of Metropolis? Nice work there Clark, taking out a a huge portion of the city, how many lives did that stunt cost. Emo-Toyman was a joke, plus how'd he escape custody so quick, was he even in jail more than a day? The fight between clone-Superman and the real Superman was cool, but again a lot of destruction of the city, would the city really be so happy to have Superman back, they probably just started rebuilding the city after his last fight, now it's screwed up again.

Lois is sleeping with Superman, but doesn't know he's Clark?!?!

She did. She calls him "Clark" when he died without him ever having told her previously. She just wanted to hear his identity out of him to confirm what she already knew. Women are cautious like that, especially with mystery men.

No one, as the commentary explicitly states the fight occurs in a rundown portion of the city.

The fight between clone-Superman and the real Superman was cool, but again a lot of destruction of the city, would the city really be so happy to have Superman back, they probably just started rebuilding the city after his last fight, now it's screwed up again.

...We're talking about Superman here. The money it takes them to rebuild is probably insignificant to the benefit of having Superman back to prevent all of the looting that had been occuring in his absence.

Lois is sleeping with Superman, but doesn't know he's Clark?!?!

Why do people continue to think this? Its established early on that Lois DOES know Superman is Clark...she just wants him to admit it. Just like how a girl knows you love them, but it aint the same until you actually tell them...

When he died, she whispered, "Clark," for cryin' out loud!

To kill Doomsday, Superman rockets him into space and then back to Earth and in the middle of Metropolis? Nice work there Clark, taking out a a huge portion of the city, how many lives did that stunt cost.

Superheros and collateral damage go hand in hand, that's a given.

Emo-Toyman was a joke, plus how'd he escape custody so quick, was he even in jail more than a day?

Escape? From what I remember he was still in custody when evil Superman killed him.

The fight between clone-Superman and the real Superman was cool, but again a lot of destruction of the city, would the city really be so happy to have Superman back, they probably just started rebuilding the city after his last fight, now it's screwed up again.

It would've been a lot worse if evil Superman remained in charge, don't ya think?

Bought it last night and watched it today.

All in all I thought it was pretty good. It will remain a part of my DVD collection.

The only part I wish they would have put into it was when the other DC heroes show up to attend and participate in Superman’s funeral.

It would not have been necessary to give any other heroes any speaking parts. I think it would have added to the gravity of a world without Superman if other heroes would have shown up to mourn him.

But then agin as previously mentioned, if they did that it would seriously beg the question from a lot of viewers..."where the hell were they when Supes was getting beat down?!"

I like it how one person said he didn't like it, then 2 people ripped it apart section by section, explaining why his opinion shouldn't have been that way. God, I know there are fans... But come on. You can like it or not, but honestly, do you need to attack their opinions? Personally I was not a fan of the movie, as I wrote a few times in this thread, since i saw it at Comic Con. But yeah, stop being such devoted fans to attack those who disliked it. People can have opinions too ya know.

Sadly, that's the way it works here. :csad: But not always. :yay:

First of all, only 2 of the guys facts were opinions, the other two were just plain wrong.

1. He said Lois didn't know Supes was Clark.
FACT: She did.

2. He said Toyman was out of custody.
FACT: He wasn't.

As far as the other two points he made...he gave his opinion, I gave mine.

I just find it ironic how you can knock me for posting my opinion on his when you're doing the exact same thing.

:whatever:

Superman-Doomsday Target Exclusive DVD is the hardest amongst Exclusives!

anyone have a screen shot of the extras menu? theres a shot from the game that has superman and doomsday, well superman is standing by himself but it has the power levels of the the two. seems like a character design or model for superman. it'd be appreciated :cwink:

The problems I had with the Doomsday movie were;

(1) those lines on Superman's face; they were very distracting

(2) Superman got his ass kicked too much in the fight. If memory serves me, Superman had a much better showing in the original comic book when he fought Doomsday. In the movie he couldn't even knock Doomsday off his feet with one punch!

Its just a poor cash in no heroes at his funeral and no real feeling of depth to any of the characters good for a few viewings nothing more imo.

Yes, there are clearly deeper criticisms that are valid. But it was hard for me to get there because I couldn't get past how Superman could not knock Doomsday off his feet with a single punch. I mean, come on! I get that they don't want (and rightfully so) a Superman who can lift a kryptonite-laced continent into space, but sometimes the de-powering goes a bit too far.
