Superman effects

I'd say that after those guys in wingsuits flying in T3, a new bar has been raised for flying and camera motion in movies. A Superman movie needs to be like that. It needs to be damn fun to see a guy flying. Every action movie looks really cheap now compared to T3.

Absolutely agree.

Snyder and the producers, stunt folks and his director of photography (Amir Mokri who was also the DOP/Cinematographer for Transformers 3) should take note and also take a page from the stunt work and angle filming done for the flying sequences in Transformers 3 for Man Of Steel.

Hiring Amir Mokri to be the DOP and Cinematographer for Man Of Steel seems to me like a GREAT hire by Snyder, Nolan and WB's.....especially after seeing how well Mokri did on T3: Dark of the Moon!

double post

Not only are his sequences ambitious, but he has a knack for shooting them in a way that no one else does or can. His shooting method is very kinetic, and that sense of randomness lends itself to a unique identity. It's almost to the level that you see in anime, where logistics of the camera are non-existent. That and pure creativity are what holds live-action movies from matching the spectacle you can find in animation.

It's one of the reasons why I really dislike how flight is shot in practically every film. All of them look the same. The two most used: wide shot on an X-Y plane, static frontal/profile on a moving background. Little variance beyond that. It's beyond boring, especially with the capabilities we have now. It's like no one knows how to shoot it in an exciting manner. Even though it involves a FLYING PERSON.

Vaughn added his own type of flair, like with the rotating background behind Banshee. Even little things like that add to the dimension. Gives it some weight and allows the audience to feel (not just view) this superpower as something truly extraordinary.

Here's something I just found on DA:

Give us shots as dynamic and unpredictable as that.

Agreed!

Transformers 3 should be the model used by Snyder and Mokri when it comes to filming flying scenes.

I think we need to hope WB's hires ILM, Weta, or Digital Domain to do the VFX and CGI work also.

It will be interesting to see who does the fx because it seems like sony imageworks mostly does WB's superhero films.

Didn't Sony only do SR and GL? They didn't do any of the VFX/CGI for Nolans Bat films or Inception did they?

No they didn't.

Best bet is WETA. I think ILM's doing the effects for Avengers.

I think Sony also did VFX/CGI for Watchmen and some house called Animal Logic did the VFX for Sucker Punch.

Regardless, I'm hoping WB's and Snyder stay the hell away from Sony for this MOS film.

Get Weta or get Digital Domain.

well animal logic did 300,Guardians,Sucker Punch

while sony did watchmen

Double Negative is underrated. They did the majority of the CG for Nolan's films and John Carter.

I'm not sure but I think WETA may be busy with the two The Hobbit films. But if they're free to do Man of Steel then I don't see why WB shouldn't hire them.

I seriously doubyt that WETA will do the VFX for MoS. They will be too busy with Hobbit and they will be the only studio working on Hobbit.

DOn't count out ILM just yet because Avengers comes out May 2012. For 2012 ILM is only working on 2 movies. Battleship and Avengers. They've been working on Battleship for quite some time .
SOmething like MoS could fit into their workload.

Although Sony Imageworks has delivered the VFX for the majority of the CB movies ( Spider-man trilogy , Ghost Rider , Superman Returns , Green Lantern , Watchmen ) they could be busy with SPider-man 4 and MI-3.

It'll be interesting, because ILM will most likely also be doing Trek 2 I would think, because they worked on the first Trek film. They are behind in the pre production for Trek though currently.

How can they be behind when they script isn't even done
Although there have been rumors that PAramount wanted TRek to come out Summer 2012 , fact is that Abrams has stated that only when the script is right will he start working on the movie. He's was busy was Super 8.
If Trek 2 gets made , it'll still come out somewhere in 2013 ( assuming they'll begin work in the next few months).

slow motion is a must, after 300, watchmen, sucker punch..."there's no going back", it's his style now~

slow motion for superman makes sense so people who complain about that should just eat their own poop.

I was browsing around trying to get info on the main special effects house hired for Man Of Steel and it looks to be good news!

It looks to be Double Negative per IMDB.

Special Effects
•Double Negative
•Pixel Liberation Front (previsualization)

I think Snyder does not need much help with his visuals. I think he will have to use CGI for a lot of the flying though because for example the flying in the Transformers 3 looked good, but in order to have good close ups and the very dramatic angles and backgrounds and everything, I think he will have to use CGI. Not for all scenes, but for a lot of scenes.

Yes there will be cgi Superman. But I hope for scenes where practical effects can not be achieved. I want wire work for most of the take offs and landings. As garbage Superman 3 was. The wire work was brilliant.

I wondered if Snyder is going make Cavil's Superman's crotch area trunk-less while walking and but magically transitioned to a red trunk filled one while flying?

Nevermind. Too outlandish an idea according to some of you who beat on about "realistic" approach to this fantastic and otherworldly character!

woo not sony image! and double negative has done some great stuff, so that's also awesome.

You wonder if red trunks will suddenly appear in the movie while flying? That's not unrealistic. That's irrational.

I hope that SFX news is true or that WETA's doing it.

holy shikes Amir Mokri? I was anticipating another Larry Fong over saturated over cranked shot snyder film. This film may very well look like Transformers 3 which would be nothing but bankable at the very least. The visuals in this film will have a lot of kick to them. If snyder can keep all the strengths of his previous work but with a new vision of photography....man I can't wait to see this trailer. Truly.

Man I still hold out hope that ILM will jump on board for this film. I swear I can't stand sony and rhythm and hues. Weta's stuff has is always well animated but it's never popped like the stuff in pirates/transformers.

Double Negative has always been creative, especially when nolans involved. I wonder if we well get any inception like shots especially with the speed factor that comes with superman.

All I know is that whoever is doing the cg has got just under Two years, so it better look amazing :woot:
