There’s a rumor making the rounds about a Superman TV series being in development with Tyler Hoechlin starring.

EXCLUSIVE: WB Developing 'Superman' TV Series

Personally, I think this is the most logical step to take the character in. WB completely fumbled the character on the big screen, and handing Hoechlin’s well-received take on the character his own series feels like the way to go.

Superman has traditionally done pretty well on television. The Adventures of Superman and Lois and Clark are pretty iconic takes on the character, while Smallville was on the air for over ten years! It’s high time we get a modern Superman show.

If anyone has doubts about the budget, look no further than Supergirl. Sure, a Superman show won’t have a budget and effects like the movies, but that’s not the most important part of telling a good Superman story. Plus, effects on television have come a LONG way. Surely a Superman series would have a pretty big budget too.

A movie series has never been the ideal way to tell Superman’s story. There’s too many twists and turns, too many supporting characters, and most importantly, too many villains for a movie series to do justice to.

I wholeheartedly believe that a new series with the right creative team will be the kick in the ass this character needs after what WB did to him. I think DC Universe would be the perfect place for a Superman show. They should scrap that Metropolis series and do a full on Superman show instead. People would flock to their streaming service.

So what do you guys think? Would you like to see a new Superman series?

Absolutely. I don't follow the CW shows regularly but I look in now and again and keep up with what's going on. I do own the DVDs of the crossovers Invasion! and Crisis on Earth-X and think they did a great job with the effects on both. With good storytelling and Hoechlin in the role I think it's a sure thing.

I would like to see a new Superman series but not with Hoechlin. And not in the same style as the other CW shows or Smallville.

Superman has had great success on TV in the past, I think it would be cool to see a new Superman TV series. I can't comment on Tyler Hoechlin in the role, because I have yet to watch him in Supergirl (hopefully in a couple of weeks I'll get to it.) But it seems everyone around here has said very positive things about him as Superman.

I’d LOVE a new Superman series.
I’m just not sure if I want it from the CW

I like him as Supes but as big a fan as everyone else seems to be :funny:

As to why I put this in DC Comics Films:
-Any sort of TV sub forum I would’ve posted in wouldn’t have gotten as much traffic
-A Superman TV series is only being talked about because of the failure of Cavill’s Superman and the ongoing “will he?/won’t he?” conversation going on regarding him in the role.

I’d rather get a Superman series now than wait 5 more years for a Man of Steel sequel. It’s clear WB isn’t very interested in telling solo Superman stories on the big screen.

Overall, I think Hoechlin is a much better Superman than Cavill. Cavill’s awkward line delivery and American accent aren’t working for me. Cavill has the look down perfectly, and his suit is better, but Hoechlin embodies the warmth and earnestness of the character so much more in my opinion.

That’s why I said it should be on DC Universe.

Agreed. Not because I don’t like him, but because I don’t trust the people who cast him in the first place to competently handle him long-term.

The idea of a Superman series on the streaming service is a no brainer. I, for one, would sign up for it in a heartbeat if I got an inkling that it would be good. Sure, I’d love for Superman to finally get his TDK(T), and I know people will say that relegating him to TV means that he isn’t good enough for the movies or whatever, but I stopped caring about **** like that a long time ago. I just want good content.

Was watching a bit of Lois & Clark and Hoechlin's episodes on Supergirl. Yeah...I'm down if only because there's a place for the antiquated material.
Reboot or not, I prefer the more modern stories getting to be told on the big screen.

They should, especially if they are putting Superman movies on the back-burner for now.

Hoechlin is fine. I don't find him particularly engaging or overly dramatic with his presence (Supergirl so far that I have seen has tended to use him as a crutch primarily for Kara's development, which given that she's the title role makes absolute sense), but I'm not sure I'd want a full series of THAT Superman. Primarily as it seems that this version is more of the "aww shucks" Reeves version that's been in a vacuum-sealed package since the late 70's. While that certainly has a place in the overall mythology, I'm not entirely confident that version is entirely translatable to a modern context over an extended period of time without being developed from the ground up.

For better or worse, CW's version of Supergirl IS the modern Superman take many have looked for, despite the actual Superman having already existed. We've hit all the origin story beats with Kara. Her powerset so far is shown to be exactly the same as Clark's. And with it we've seen her grow as a character, even in comparison to her "younger" more famous cousin. It calls into question when this purported series would take place. In the present timeline of Supergirl? Before she lands on Earth? Or some completely disconnected time and place?

The CW, despite itself, has at the very least only really developed new show properties when there had been a place for different genres and new stories to be told with characters that have been introduced elsewhere. I'm just not sure if a Superman series is new or different enough from what they already have to go forward with. And that's even with Krypton being a show that exists, and one that is completely focused on doing something new and different with the mythology.

I'm fine with this if it happens and I like Hoechlin in the role. But please for the love of God, fix his stupid cape. The rest of the costume is okay but do something better with the cape clasps. I know the capes have to be removable but the way Kara's cape attaches looks fine. Do something more like that.

Oh no, please no more cheap soap operas! This is never going to end, isn't it?

First, if there was a poll choice for " F$## YEAH !" that would be me.

No Superman show is ever going to be perfect but the Superman we got from Supergirl was fantastic ! The writers created a very likeable characterisation and Hoechlin played it well - given the terrible service that Supes has been getting on the big screen we should grab ahold of a decent version of him and not let go.

Second, I don't understand the hate for the cape clasps, personally I like them. But hey, to each their own I guess.

I haven’t seen one person criticise Hoechlin’s performance. That’s extremely rare. A clear sign he deserves a full series order... or, whisper it... a movie.

Although he’s good on his own merits (and even more compared to Cavill), there are some weak spots in his acting that would make me hesitant to give him a movie role, whether he’s playing the same version of the character or not.

When I first saw the clasps I really didn't like them but they've grown on me.

I’ve never disliked them, but they grew on me too. I’ve never understood why people hate them so much.

The more I think about it the more I feel like I’d prefer a new series over a movie.
With a good budget and the right team behind it, it could be great.

We’ll be lucky to get a sequel to MoS or any other Superman movie anytime soon.
Give me a season of Superman adventures :D

Along with many others, I quite enjoyed Superman’s first guest-starring appearance on Supergirl. But IMO, part of the reason the character was so well received was because he was (as it were) pitched several “slow balls” which were easily hit “out of the park.” Or, to evoke a different analogy, it was a medley of Superman’s “greatest hits.” E.g., CK learns of a looming crisis, classic alleyway shirt rip and transformation, spectacular plane rescue, cutesy CK scenes at the Daily Planet in a newsroom, etc.

Of course, the real challenge happens when the initial novelty and excitement wears off and you get into the routine of producing 22 episodes every season. And (obviously) the issue isn’t quantity so much as quality. It’s something that most of DC/CW shows (including SG) have struggled with. Bottom line: I’m not so convinced that Team Berlanti would do any better with a Superman series.

An additional complication: As often noted, Supergirl has stolen borrowed several classic Superman elements and tropes. These include Kara as a reporter, CatCo as a surrogate Daily Planet, certain supporting characters (e.g. James Olsen), various villains and even specific stories (e.g., “For the Girl Who Has Everything”), etc. Now, I’d call this an entirely forgivable “theft” - inasmuch as there was (at the time) little likelihood of a Superman TV series. (Therefore, why not repurpose these elements?) But going forward, it seems to me that a hypothetical Superman would come across as derivative and redundant in terms of what Supergirl is already doing.

Yeah, he's very good from what I've seen. But those cape clasps just bother me. They make the whole suit look incredible cheap. I think the other problem is that they're so obviously not actually part of the cape itself. But that's just me.

Given the news about Cavill and Superman films currently, this news makes sense and the signs were there.

But regardless, because of Cavill/Superman, and not having both, this series if true will ultimately be bittersweet.
