Taika Waititi directing Judge Dredd film, if it happens

Serious question. Does Dredd really have a following? I know the Urban film is well regarded but it bombed even with a low budget. The Stallone film was reviled and barely made its budget back. Of course, movies like Guardians of the Galaxy proved that CBMs don’t have to be based on characters with big fan bases to be successful. But GOTG also came out when the Marvel brand was really hitting its stride so that obviously helped. I just wonder if they are just beating a dead horse with this one.

Funny that this was announced on the same day the trailer for Mortal Kombat 2 with Urban came out.

Taika is better suited to doing an IP comedy like Barbie than…yet another Judge Dredd for whatever reason.

Waititi kind of has a million projects on the go so we’ll see which one actually gets made.

I mean, Flash Gordon, Akira, Star Wars, The Incal…

The Charlie and the Chocolate factory animated series for Netflix, An Oompa Loompa show, James, and acting in a bunch of other stuff.

He should slow down, lol

The previous one was great and it should have been a sequel rather than yet another reboot. Maybe a series or so.

Also I'm very meh on Waititi and his humour these days.

A live-action Akira that's been in development hell for almost 20 years?

It's a shame we won't get president Bad Bob Booth in the movies because now he would look like a Trump parody even though the comic character predated Trump's political career.

The logline is being kept under the visor, but the pitch is said to take inspiration more from the comics than the previous screen iterations, leaning into the world-building and dark humor. It is also meant to be a fun sci-fi blockbuster that nonetheless speaks to this moment in culture. The desire is to see the movie launch a Dredd universe that could be explored with additional movies and shows across various platforms.

A Dredd Universe? High hopes, but I kind of doubt this will happen as Waititi has various projects in the works as previously mentioned.

And even if it did, it would most likely bomb.

A Dredd Universe? I see no way in hell that happens. They've had two attempts at the main character and failed to make a go of it.

I like Taika but this just seems like a weird fit for him unless they are planning to lean into the goofy stuff like the Stallone movie. And I don’t think anyone wants that.

Yeah this is an odd pairing but then it doesnt feel very likely to happen anyway. Taika seems to get connected to a lot of stuff that doesnt happen, wouldnt be shocked if he "leaves the project" at some point.

Details behind the new project are unknown other then it featuring some of more lighter comedic touches to the property for which Waititi films are known.

Judge Dredd stories often satirise American and British culture, with a focus on authoritarianism and police brutality. Judge Dredd made his live-action debut in 1995 in Judge Dredd, portrayed by Sylvester Stallone.

Yeah I don't fancy a Judge Dredd movie with a lighter tone myself. It's likely to be bad.
