Time for a new Judge Dredd film....

The Versace costumes were cool and the ABC warrior looked like it stepped straight off of one of Kev Walkers bristol boards. The production design for Mega City One was perfect, as was Mean Angel. Dyane Lane was hot as always and Von Sydow was great as Fargo was excellent (as always). The Lawmaster bikes were cool also, apart from having them be able to fly.

The gripes I have with the movie are:-

- The taking off of the Helmet.
Obviously, Stallone's Dredd taking the mask off and revealing Dredd's face about , what, 10 minutes into the film? I understand it was on the insistance of the producers to have their star not cover his face for the entire film (!) but c'mon.......

- Armand Assante as Rico.
Hmm, a clone of Dredd that doesnt actually look like him. They coulda had Stallone double up as Rico (that would also have appeased the producers, because as Rico, Stallone's face woulda been on screen)

- Comedy relief Rob Schneider.
I understand the need for the character, really I do, we are introduced to the world of Dredd through Scneider's eyes........but 'Fergie' was an absolutely lame character. Black humour is a big part of the Dredd universe, but not the type of 'humour' that Schneider gives us.

-The Lack of the Lawgiver 1
Simply an iconic design in the Dredd universe, yet they changed it.

Looking at the movie in retrospect, it's a clash between a comicbook adaption and a typical 90's action movie, and the latter wins out.

Agreed.

From the time he took of the helmet, they might've just named renamed the film 'Demolition Man 2' - the climactic scene atop the wreck of the Statue of Liberty had virtually no 'Dredd-like' features about it.

EDIT: Awesome Batman tribute by the way. It's also reminded me of how good Elfman's score was.

New Judge Dredd movie is indeed needed. It would be cool if they'd cast an unknown for the part and kept him hidden even thru promotion of the movie and we'd never see his face. Ahahaha, I really need to go to sleep...

Thanks.

The first minutes of the Dredd film were more than ok, the call to remove the helmet and Rob Schneider killed the rest of the film.

I don't think another shot is really needed. :o

It's more precisely these reason's why we need another Dredd film.

*Oops* ^^^

That should have read 'It's for precisely these reasons why we need another Dredd film.' :o

Anyways, Kev's right. We need a CR style reboot here asap.

And hurry up and make Rogue Trooper as well; to get rid of the taste of 'Soldier' dammit!!!

I've seen the Stalone movie a couple times and it just bad. The acting seems to be phoned in. It was like no one really wanted to be in that movie. We need a faithful adaptation. Maybe have Judge Death in it :D

Yeah.

Serious sci-fi fare mixed with a bit of healthy black humour/satire and gory horror.

Paul Verheoven to direct.

I'm there already.

:D

I don't know anything about this character...but damn that is an awesome name...JUDGE DREDD!

An awesome name and an awesome concept - he's actually based off Dirty Harry. How cool is that?

To be honest - I havent really got a clue who could play him.

??????

It's a tough casting call - Mid 30's white male, kinda grizzled looking yet really physically fit, and of course, has to have that 'Dredd' chin.

Any thoughts?

Get an unknown, so we never do know what his face looks like unless we look him up on the internet.

I could go with that - the money they'd save from not having a big star as Dredd could go towards the production budget - of which I fear they'd need every penny as I don't think many studios will give them a major budget to deal with after the 1st film.

Possibly, although if you go to a studio with any comic-based project right now they will give you all the money they have, the keys to their car, and their wife.

There were two (more faithful albeit lower-budget) Judge Dredd movies in pre-production in the ealry 2000s, I'm trying to locate some info on the net.

Aha!

From www.efavata.com:

"September 22, 2004: CBR News recently talked with Silvio Astarita, one of the producers of a new Judge Dredd film currently in pre-production with I Am The Law Productions and Framework in association with Rebellion/2000 AD. In May of last year, Shoreline Entertainment in association with Rebellion/2000 AD announced pre-production had begun on two Dredd films, "Judge Dredd: Dredd Reckoning" and "Judge Dredd: Possession." "Dredd Reckoning" was to be the first film in the series and would pit Mega-City's top cop against corruption in the justice department, and "Possession" would feature Judge Dredd against his arch-nemesis Judge Death. These films were supposed to be shot back to back. Now that the "Judge Dredd" film is being developed by I Am The Law, these scripts have been abandoned. The current plan is to work on one movie at a time. "We have a new writer on board so we will have a new story line," Astarita told CBR. I Am The Law is currently not revealing the identity of the new writer. The new Judge Dredd film is still in its early stages of development. Some studios have expressed interest in the film, but the screenplay must be completed before any deals begin. I Am The Law knows who they want to direct the film. "We do have someone in mind right now, but again to soon to reveal the name." Astarita said. Now that comic book movies are hip again, Astarita said some actors have expressed a desire to play Mega-City's legendary lawman, but the title role would not be cast till a final screenplay is completed and approved. I Am the Law will consider a variety of actors for Dredd. " I do not believe we need a big name actor for the main role but that doesn't mean we will not get one," Astarita explained."

...and also on David Carradine's Frankenstein in "Death Race 2000".

Dredd was on t.v again last night and for all the bad things about the film (that I've posted previously - ad nausiem) the production design (apart from a few quibbles) was spot on (I loved the whole down-and-dirty 'rusted' tech look of the streets and buildings in direct comparison to the shiny, new tech look of the Hall of Justice.

The A.B.C. warrior and Mean Machine designs were brilliant

And, on top of that, I also came away even more convinced (if that were possible) that Stallone taking off the helmet is one of Hollywood's biggest blunder's of all time. Because some of the images of him with the helmet are also spot on. The 1st 2 pics below are a couple of my favourite shots that just scream 'Dredd' and the side profile shot of Stallone with the Lawgiver 2 is amazing (the lips and chin are perfect!)
