Tangled Web: 'Spider-Man 3' Re-Shoots Planned, James Franco Reveals

Director Sam Raimi has put out call for 'more action,' actor says.

LOS ANGELES — There are certain things that every good geek knows to be true, like the fact that Spider-Man's secret identity is Peter Parker, or or that the "Spider-Man" movies have pulled in more dough than an army of overworked pizza makers, or that "Spider-Man 3" recently completed theaters next summer.

Uh ... strike that last one.

"The next thing I'm shooting?" series star James Franco said over the weekend. "Re-shoots on 'Spider-Man.' "

Revealing that director Sam Raimi has put out the call for "more action," Franco said he's being called back to the set of the blockbuster. "Probably next month," he added.

Members of the flick's cast, including Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst, along with franchise newcomers Thomas Haden Church (as beach-bashing baddie the Sandman), Topher Grace (as alien threat Venom) and Bryce Dallas Howard (as Parker paramour Gwen Stacy), recently arrived triumphant at San Diego's Comic-Con to screen footage for fans (see " 'Spider-Man 3' Cast Confirms Love Triangle, Death, Soul-Sucking Costume"). Franco said he regretted being unable to make the trip along with his co-stars, and seemed shocked by much of what was revealed there.

Despite the widely downloaded teaser trailer that shows a black-and-green-suited Franco riding a glider (see it for yourself right here), and Raimi's own admission that Franco's Harry Osbourn will be "somewhere between" the comic book characters of Green Goblin and Hobgoblin, the tight-lipped actor refused to admit that Harry's long-simmering angst turns him into a villain. "You saw me in a suit?" Franco asked, feigning incredulity. "I don't think that was me."

Franco also seemed surprised by Raimi's assertions that Harry's story line will conclude with the third film (the actor's contract expires after "Spider-Man 3"). "It's really news to me. It's actually breaking my heart to hear that my character is being rounded up in this movie," the 28-year-old Franco said, half-kidding. "God, I think I'm going to cry."

Insisting that Church and Grace "bring amazing acting and great talent" to the third installment of the franchise, Franco insisted that he's eager to see the finished product. "The journey is much different than the final product. So when we actually see the movies, it's so much different than how it felt making it. I'm sure I'll be very happy."

Revealing that he expects a new trailer to be on the way soon, Franco said the new flick will offer fans plenty of action, as well as an opportunity to see the young thespians stretch out their acting muscles. "It's not that there's less acting in [a 'Spider-Man'] movie. I mean, it has the same number of acting scenes as any other movie," Franco said. "It's just that the action takes so much longer, so it feels like it's all action. Really, in a way, it's two months worth of regular scenes, which is what a typical movie has, and then we had to do four months of action."

Now, like a superhero's tights after an all-you-can-eat buffet, it seems that Sam Raimi is going to stretch those four months into just a little more.

See everything we've got on "Spider-Man 3."

Hopefully they were using that goblin suit as a decoy and filming Harry in the REAL costume.

awesome find, great post, wonderful news. how terrible would it be to have all the action shot and have to "fill" time with story, that would turn out horribly. but this shows raimi truly focused on the story first and foremost, as he should, and is know going back for more action. this new is very pleasing news to me! im so psyched!

i love franco's wittines and attempts to be mysterious

obviously franco is shooting more action, but i bet there is some more venom too, i jsut have a feeling that raimi initially got a lot of sandman and the key story points and now reviewing it he feels he needs more harry and venom to balance the latter acts of the movie with the intro

Well we can only hope the paintball suit is a decoy or a tease from just early on. Maybe we will see some Goblin action afterall. I mean, technically Raimi said harry would nto be Green Goblin or Hobgoblin, but he said nothing about GG2, could be a sneaky ass loophole to tease all of us impatient rabid fans . considering there is still 9 months to go till release. But we will just have to wait and see.

i could very easily be proved wrong, but i just dont think harry is gonna be a goblin, i think raimi feels the general public would accept harry using all his fathers weapons and having an evil side much better than they would him just being another goblin this soon. thats not to say i wouldnt mind seeing him as a goblin, but i just dont feel it will happen

oh yea, i also like that he said he thinks another trailer will be coming soon, that always good news!

Lies, Lies, Lies.

The Spider-Man trailer (the one shown in ComicCon) will not be officially released until at least December. A good majority of films release their official trailers at least four months before they release their film, and that's an early head start. Also, no reason for Raimi to release the trailer sooner than Christmas. He has all the hype he already needs, and releasing the trailer too soon will result in an endless amount of speculation until the film arrives, at which point people will already probably be sick of the film by talking about it so much.

It's good that we're getting more action.. as powerful an emotional journey Spider-Man 2 was, I can never say no when someone offers more action scenes from my favorite comic-book character.

I agree, but what if(this is my theory from earlier, and still could be possible) He is just harry on the glider and stuff for a while, eventually takes the syrum and starts going a little nutty. tehn when he gets the pumpkin bomb in the face, instead of killing him the(which woudl eb lame as hell) It disfigures him and with the insanity increasing he decides he has to cover his face with an actual mask, goblinesque maybe. With pressure to become a villain from his father in hallucinations. Soemthing long those lines. and it would fit in with all the information that has been let out. It would bring soem Goblin action to it before he eventually gets killed. I am just hoping we get to see soem kind of goblin incarnation in him at some point, even if only for a small time. then after death his equip can be stashed away and set up a possibility for a hobgoblin in another movie somwehere down the line. We will just have to wait and see, but it would be best to put soem kind of goblin 2 stuff into him at somepoint before he dies. even if just for a littlebit.

Could be, or maybe there will be another trailer to slake lust and the biggest offical one nearer to the release. Alot of movies end up with more than 2 trailers, btu some don't. its really a crapshoot. But the hype for this movie will not die down, it can only continue till we get the movie and sit there in the theatre seats for 2plus hours and shut the fock up and just WATCH.

Hmm. I hope they re do the costumes and I hope they replace Grace with Peter Sarsgaard.

I agree with you.. I have a feeling this movie is going to reach the 3-hour mark.. it's going to be right up there with Braveheart and the Titanic in terms of epic scope and scale. =)

i'm not disagreeing with you, BUT some films have three trailers. teaser, theater trailer 1, and theater trailer 2. X2 had three of them. so, they could release an official trailer earlier than December. but i'm in agreement with you that they shouldn't. don't want the public to get burnt out on SM3 before the film arrives.

Great it's about time we got some good fresh news. More action.... awesome. New Trailer coming out soon !!!!!!! It's about time . :spidey: I can't wait for spidey 3.

bonus is all i have to say...me likes franco a lot

so this movie will have a lot of action. great. obviously it will have also a lot of story. well sony is about to get a lot of money. if you want BO then you need action. WB thinks that people will gave them 200 milions for a superman without action. dream on.
