Teens getting drunk off hand sanitizer

Another fun nugget: It can cause blindness.
Ethanol? No, that'd be methanol. Still an alcohol, but very much different. It smells better, for one thing. :oldrazz:

70% ethanol kills things very well. We use it to sterilize our tissue culture hood. Sterilize = killing everything inside. Yeah. Don't do it.

 Really?
I'm only basing this off of a documentary I saw. It was about an alcoholic that was using hospital sanitizer to get drunk while he was hospitalized, and the narrator claimed that hand sanitizer can cause blindness.

I honestly have no idea what's really in hand sanitizer, but are you sure different brands don't use methanol?

I've only seen methanol in labs, although Wikipedia also says that it's used industrially and for fuel. It's not listed as an ingredient in hand sanitizers, I suspect it's because it's so lethal. 30mL of the pure stuff is potentially fatal.

So I did an engine source because I'm actually pretty curious now, and the only info on this that I could really find was someone asking if hand sanitizer kills sperm.... Yep.

But it did sort of provide an answer: "Now, to address appendage sanitizers and sperm in general. Many hand sanitizers own alcohol (ethanol) as their active ingredient. When you put these hand sanitizers on your skin, they dry out the surrounding area and germs on your skin die from dehydration. You’ve probably noticed that these hand sanitizers evaporate very at a rate of knots and leave your skin feeling dry. Alcohol-dependent hand sanitizers typically also contain the toxic substance methanol, so that minors who buy paw sanitizers will not drink them. Alcohol hand sanitizers do not harm your skin, because the top skin layer of the skin is already comatose. Now, the combination of dehydration and toxic methanol might kill some sperm cells, but it is probably ineffective as a spermicide. Keep in mind that a damp vagina will restore water to the sperm cells and that even reduced amounts of sperm from ejaculate can cause a pregnancy.

So that begs the question, what's the difference between alcohol-dependent hand sanitizer and non-alcoholic dependent hand sanitizer?

Lab-grade ethanol usually contains a little bit of methanol in them so people won't drink it. Because it's lethal and will make you blind in small doses. IMO if kids really were ingesting hand sanitizer with methanol in it, we'd be hearing way more about cases of blindness. :oldrazz:

And um, one has alcohol and one does not? :oldrazz: There's more than one way to kill bacteria, you know....

So there is methanol in hand sanitizer, just really small doses?

My mistake. That was a dumb question. I suppose I meant to ask whether or not hospitals use alcohol-dependent sanitizer, and the ones people buy in stores for their homes are non-alcoholic which contain smaller dosage....

Yeah, it's late and I've been up almost an entire day. So please forgive me. It feels like I'm not making any sense, so I know I'm most likely not to you either.

Dunno, actually. I would actually think not, if they didn't want to poison people. Scientists are supposed to know not to drink lab-grade chemicals, but can't trust a regular consumer to know that. As I said, if kids really are drinking hand sanitizer with methanol in it, we'd be hearing about rampant cases of blindness. But we're not, soooooo....

I would actually think that hospitals would use non-alcoholic sanitizers since they'd be using them all the time. My friend used to spray ethanol on his bare hands in the lab to sterilize them, and it was extremely drying.

But doctors and nurses are really supposed to wash their hands, not depend on hand sanitizer.

A lot of people reading this will probably baulk at the thought and think of how they would never partake of any kind of substance like this for a high, but in some cases they will already have without knowing it, that is, if they have ever partaken of any kind of illegal drugs in chemical form.
If you have ever smoked marajuana in solid form, it most likely was mixed with rubber, tyres, whatever they can get ahold of that is the same colour that will mix with the mj and burn easily.
That UK band Goldie lookin chain did a song called 22%(something like that anyway), talking about how studies of solid marajuana generally held there was only that amount of mj in it.

Same with white powdered drugs like amphetamines and cocaine, they will often be mixed with bathroom cleaner, any kind of household prodcut that is a white powder and can be mixed with the drug.

Heroin will often be mixed with glass and sand.

Helium mind bombers will usually be mixed with crushed brick powder from bouncy castles.

Midgets have been snorting rubber bands since the 50s in an effort to elasticise their bones, which is actually more difficult than it sounds. One circus performer got his inner skull tied up so tight he had to have his brain bounced.

The Irish have been gobbling up a watered down version of LSD in large quantaties, due to the difficulties in smuggling drugs into the country due to Bono. this 'LSD' is made from the debris left behind in removal trucks from carpets and linoleum, commonly known as 'Leprecaun stomach dust', again, more difficult to ingest than it sounds.

and of course, the American homeless have been snorting hamburger grease since the mid-70s. Jeff Goldblum can be seen with burger veins running down his nose in the original Death Wish, Bronson was also a big fan, the two of them apparently strapped Micheal Winner onto the back of a Pumpkin and rolled him down a hill into oncoming traffic, laughing wildly as they did so, amidst a hill of discarded buns and burgers.
