Action-Adventure TENET

I showed my dad the 2nd trailer. His reaction was pure incredulity. He looked at me and said, "What is that **** even supposed to be?" Like the trailer irritated him by beind so absurd. So I don't think he will rush out to watch this particular Nolan film. :hehe:

I didn't even bother showing him the music video "trailer". The song is cringeworthy.

I faced a similar reaction from my brother in-law. He actually went as far as stopping the trailer halfway through. I had to forced him to finish it at the very least. He wasn't impressed at all. Even a friend of mine is blatantly admitting he is waiting for a camrip version of it because he doesn't want to go in a theater for this movie.

Just FYI I'll definitely see it again, just to fill in some more gaps.

As confusing as it was, it was still a good time and worth the watch.

Has it? Dunkirk is his most critically acclaimed film and it happened post-rises.

Dunkirk is well received as a cinematic spectacle, but TDKR and Interstellar started his reputation as being full of "plot holes" and favoring ideas over character arcs. I personally put Chris Nolan in the Wes Anderson camp of "consistently good but seldom amazing", but that doesn't make Memento and The Dark Knight any less of the modern classics they are.

That’s because Ruses and Interstellar are full of holes. Dunkirk isn’t.

People seem to forget that Rises actually got better overall critical reviews than Batman Begins, Inception and The Prestige. Add Dunkirk being critically acclaimed, I don’t think you can say that there has been a recent negative trend in Nolan’s career. It’s more Interstellar(and now perhaps Tenet) didn’t connect to critics.

The Dark Knight Rises made the AFI's top 10 list of 2012. Interstellar made the top 10 in 2014 for that matter. And let's not forget Dunkirk got him his first Oscar nom for directing. He's still swinging.

I just think everyone has their own favorites and lesser favorites. TDK and Inception seem to be his most universally loved, though they still have haters. But there are people who love Interstellar and didn't like Dunkirk and vice versa. It's too splintered to really identify it as a certain trend. He takes some big swings and risks with all his films, so I think different parts of the audience and critics react differently to that each time.

Rises is easily his most overrated film. Interstellar at least had some neat ideas, spectacular visuals,, and even helped with scientific black hole research. But TDKR is a forgettable story with bad pacing, bad choreography, a bland mcguffin, and thankfully likeable characters that we care about.

Frankly the WW3 plot is the first and main thing about Tenet that turned me off of it. Even hearing it spoken about in the trailer made me want to eye roll, because its such a lazy doomsday scenario for a story. Just like the nuke in TDKR.

You know that thing that pops up every now and then in different sites, it tells you to type in the exact code to confirm one isn't a bot? Tis' how Nolan writes his female characters.

TDKR hasn't aged particularly well. There's a lot of good in it, but the not so good? Woof.

Oh, Black Narcissus......trying so very hard to be cool and witty, and instead being.......well.

Nah, you just taking offense at a random joke. The man can't write good female characters, but he is still one of the best, even for a machine.

^ People seem to like Tenet, but aren't over the moon toward it. I wouldn't be surprised if it got a 75-80 percent fresh on the Tomatometer, but I'd gladly give it a watch under non-COVID circumstances.

Dunkirk is Nolan's most critically acclaimed film - he even managed to win over some of his most ardent critics with it. At the same time, if IMDB ratings are to be given any credence whatsoever, his "base" of fans sees it as his weakest effort. (I love it and I don't agree with that.)

From the sounds of it with Tenet, Nolan decided "screw it" and doubled-down on everything that has made him such a powerful figure in Hollywood and garnered him such a fervent fanbase. He took his shot at Oscar glory. Maybe he'll try again someday, but for now he's going to go back to his genre film comfort zone.

Interstellar and The Dark Knight Rises made numerous critic Top 10 lists for their respective years. The thing that seems to be setting Tenet apart right now is the fact that it's average rating represents the lowest of Nolan's career. It still has numerous 10/10's, however.
