Action-Adventure Terminator: Dark Fate

Box Office failure was the best thing to happen to this series for a while tbh. Best chance of a decent film is to drop those delusions of blockbuster status and the awful studio franchise plans that come with it, and do a 'Prey'. Make something cheap and lean with a good director who has an interesting idea. Even a future war film doesn't have to be a $200 mil project. That time period is largely humans scurrying underground like rats, and fighting in the dark amongst rubble.

I'd take it back to the smaller budget, horror roots for a project. I would have a very pregnant Sarah Connor being stalked by a Terminator just as she is about to give birth to John. Helping her throughout the ordeal is a young Enrique from T2 (establishes how they met). And when she gives birth to John, her doctor is a parent of Kyle Reese.

But that's just where I'm at lol.

You still had the nonsense of the alternate T-800 growing a conscience and a sense of moral right and wrong on its own and never really seeing it happen. Also becoming a father and husband.

Also the fridging of John Connor.

The T-800 stuff I didn’t mind as it was stated in T2 it’s a learning computer. It was interesting seeing a Terminator who had fulfilled its mission also. I would have liked more of that TBH.

The John Connor they just ran out of ideas with the character.

Terminator should never have been a franchise.

Cameron only made T2 because that's the movie he originally wanted to make but didn't have the money or the technology to do so originally.

T2 had a perfect definitive ending. Attempting to sequelize it was always a mistake.

Also, every Future War idea sounds like bad fan fiction.

I think they only said that in the special edition though.

I think they still kept that line in the theatrical cut if I remember correctly. Actually made it even easier to understand and then just cut out them having to flip a switch to make it happen. “My cpu is a neural net processor. A learning computer. The more contact I have with humans. The more I learn.”

Yeah exactly. As cool as the deleted scene is, it was rendered completely expendable with a simple dubbed in line.

It’s funny because I don’t like that scene that much overall, particularly Sarah trying to smash the chip. Like I get it because of her paranoia over him being a terminator but considering that an even worse Terminator was on their ass I thought she was kinda dumb. I think Sarah just staring at the Terminator as he stood in front of the window said everything I needed to know. Honestly I’ll always take the theatrical cut over the special edition. I think the one extra scene I liked was the Kyle Reese one, and that’s more because it was just cool to see Michael Biehn again.

“Oh you see here’s your problem. You had the switch flipped to evil instead of good”

Agreed. Theatrical all day. It's perfectly paced. You really don't need anyting that was added for the special edition, as nice as it is to see Biehn one more time.

And the problem with Salvation which was really the best place to go for the franchise is the writers couldn't crack writing a story about John Connor. The whole premise of Salvation was pitched as a Marcus story and John Connor is a minor character and then John Connor dies and Marcus BECOMES John Connor to give the people a savior and legend to uphold and prop them up and get behind to win the war.

It sounds like they brought on Jonathan Nolan to heft out the John Connor parts, but it still felt like Marcus's story. Marcus is the audience's surrogate and window-in character for the movie. He's the movie's true protagonist. They simply added in some John Connor scenes to round out his role, but they feel shoehorned and badly integrated.

The original writers of T4 were writing a movie about Marcus and like human/cyborg hybrids that took over the world and were the real Skynet. I mean that's weird and all but it's also not Terminator. Skynet is/was a self-aware AI program. It's a thinking/learning computer. It's not the tool of a group of human/cyborg hybrids who are trying to get dominion over the earth and like create a goofy utopia where they have human cyborg orgies and do whatever they want.

The problem with the new human/cyborgs being in charge is basically that it ruins Skynet, something else the writers couldn't figure out.

Hell, I've always wanted a movie about Kyle Reese and his squad trying to stave off the Terminators while John Connor and his team create the time machine to send him back to 1984. The ending obviously sets up what we saw in T1.

Pretty much what the story of the Terminator: Resistance game was, but with Reese as the protagonist.

Yep, and therein lies the problem with Terminator Salvation (well, the biggest one). You had TWO potential protagonists that people were already invested in and were important to the story - Connor and Reese. It could have centered on either one. But nahhhhh let’s make them both supporting characters and focus on this other A-hole no one has ever heard of before because after T2 we aren’t confident in a Terminator movie where the hero isn’t a cyborg of some kind. Just completely stupid.

A low budget horror movie with the original endoskeleton set in the past. In a visually interesting decade. New storyline, no Arnold, same vibe as the original. That's the only thing I'd be interested in. Full-on horror.

You might as well just make an original film. Unlike Predator or Alien, Terminator is tied to a very specific lore, which has already been muddled by the post T2 sequels. It's best left alone.

No, I love the endoskeleton! :D

A massive future war movie that looks exactly like the Cameron future sequences with huge Endoskeletons armies and Hunter Killers. Have an intense actor to play John Conner showing him as a great military leader. Have Arnie as a General who gets captured by Skynet but make him in a different army then John Conners one so they never meet but Arnie knows Conner but not the other way around. No need to deage him either then show him fighting and almost winning against the machines but gets killed and then used as the skin and voice for the T-800. Show pockets of resistance armies battling the machines all over the world but show the battles over the years in the first half of the film then have the final half as the final battle by John Conner and Kyle Reese and the Resistance just barely beat Skynet and smash the grid and finally send Kyle Reese back to 1984 but finish the film right there just before he steps into the time displacement sphere. End with the words... The future is not set. Let it be a direct prequel to Cameron's films. Finally give the fans what they have been craving for since T1 and T2. No rewriting the lore. No leaving room for sequels. T1, T2 and a Future war movie prequel. That would be my perfect Terminator trilogy. John Connor is fully respected and Arnie is not shoehorned in and fits organically into the story.

Connor and Skynet aren't even canon anymore thanks to Dark Fate. A prequel to a timeline that doesn't exist is pointless.

A a terminator movie can not make a lot of money anymore. If there was interest then the 2019 movie would at least have a huge opening even with bad reviews. why? You have James Cameron and Linda hamilton promoting the movie.
Terminator: Dark Fate - Box Office Mojo
Could a movie set in the future make money before T3? yes maybe. could a movie that looks like the T2 future and not Salvation make money after T3 2003? yes maybe.
There are two ideas. first one is a low budget movie that is a remake of the first one. the second idea for a new movie is repeating the T2 movie again and again.Without Dark Fate Cameron could help Time Miller direct an original 100million scifi action movie. Now they are not speaking anymore.

It's over. rewatch the first two movies and find a hobby outside your living room.

The Terminator Dark Fate timeline also doesn't exist, because the movie flopped. So they would likely reboot it YET AGAIN if they ever made another Terminator movie. Because who wants to make a sequel to THAT mess?
