Action-Adventure Terminator: Dark Fate

TheArnoldFans - News - Exclusive: Arnold Talks “T6” & Fate of “Conan” & Brings Comic Con Pop Culture to Ohio!

Working with Tim Miller
"The director, Tim Miller, was very, very talented and I can see why his movie, Deadpool, made so much money and why it was successful because he’s very organized. He’s an expert with visual effects and special effects and with stunts. He felt very comfortable directing all the actors, the young and the older ones. He was a pleasure to work with."

Working with James Cameron and Tim Miller
"It was a very interesting film to do with Tim, the dynamic, between him and with Jim Cameron producing. So Jim Cameron is right now directing Avatar films so he’s taken on this enormous challenge and he’s very busy with that BUT he’s a control freak and as you know, Terminator is kind of his baby so he does get involved in the filming so there were interesting discussions about which direction to go with a certain scene or how the dialogue should finish or what the certain look should be of an individual and all that stuff so there was a big collaboration between Jim and Tim Miller. I feel it was in good hands with both of them."

T6 Film Budget and Arnold Saw a Big Chunk of the Film
"David Ellison was the producer, he’s of course a very young and ambitious guy who raised the money for the movie, which is important. The budget was somewhere between 160 million and 200 million dollars. I couldn’t tell you exactly because the movie isn’t finished yet. It's still being worked on. Visual effects are being done now. I’ve seen 15 minutes and it looked great and I was very excited about it.”

Film Production
"Well, I’m reluctant to say anything about Terminator 6 other than we’ve successfully completed filming of it in Budapest. I was filming there for three months. I had a wonderful time and it was a fantastic city to shoot with great tax credits. 36 percent you get back for every dollar that you spent over there.”

The Studio is Watching!
"That’s all I really can tell you because if I say more about it, than the studio usually goes crazy and they call me and they go crazy and they say 'Why did you give this away? We wanted to announce this on March 31st or something.' So anyways, I let them makes those decisions.”

However, then I wonder what else happens to Kyle Reese in this timeline? Wouldn't Kyle be a teenager by now with it being 2019

SXSW Exclusive: Tim Miller Thinks ‘Terminator Fans Will Be Happy’ With ‘Dark Fate’

While speaking to David Fincher and Tim Miller about their upcoming animated Netflix anthology series Love, Death & Robots at SXSW, Observer tried to pry some precious intel out of Miller about the project. Unsurprisingly, the filmmaker remained tight-lipped.

“I think Terminator fans will be happy,” Miller said when asked if the film will address the mysterious absence of mankind’s savior, John Conner, in all casting reports and plot summaries. Dark Fate will serve as a direct sequel to Judgment Day and ignore the continuity of everything that came after it. That is why Linda Hamilton is returning to her iconic role of Sarah Conner.

He added: “I just tried to make the best film we could. As a fan, I know there are things people want to see and questions they’d like answered right now. But I’d never ruin that by telling details ahead of the movie. I just think they’ll be happy with it.”

Fair enough. We’re itching to know but we’ll have to wait until the film hits theaters on November 1 to find out.

Terminator 6's Tim Miller says Linda Hamilton and James Cameron's rules are key

We love the Terminator movies. That's a given. James Cameron's gritty, low budget original blew people's minds and then he went and took everything to the next level with his mega-budget action-focused sequel that set the gold standard for studio blockbuster releases.

The problem is every sequel after that has been... not great. You'll find fans of each one (after all every movie is someone's favorite), but it's impossible to deny that without Cameron's leadership the series hasn't had the same spark as those original two films.

Terminator: Genisys was the latest cringe-worthy addition to the franchise and that one fizzled. However, the next Terminator, Terminator: Dark Fate, stands a shot at possibly breaking the downward spiral of this iconic franchise. Cameron is back in a creative leadership position and Deadpool's Tim Miller is directing.

"I think two things should bring peace of mind to any Terminator fan because it's what brought me peace of mind: that Jim was coming back and that Linda Hamilton is coming back," Miller told SYFY WIRE at SXSW (during a longer chat about his new Netflix series, Love, Death & Robots). "I love Arnold, he's terrific, but to me, it was always Linda's story, so her coming back is f***ing huge. And I can tell you this: she's f***ing amazing in the movie. I could not be happier."

Miller says that as both a filmmaker and a fan, having grown up with the first few movies in the transformational sci-fi saga. He's respectful of the canon and history, and with Cameron on board, he's able to stay within the bounds of previous stories. Even with time-travel such a fundamental part of the series' core, it's not being used in any gratuitous way for storytelling purposes.

"Not as many as you think," Miller said, responding to a question about how often time travel would be to retcon the more poorly retrieved later chapters in the franchise. "I think Jim laid out the rules fairly clearly about how that works."

In the end, that's a positive thing — a fan first, Miller was focused on creating something that would please himself and those like him.

"I'm sure that if I was a fan at home and not directing the sixth installment in the Terminator franchise, I would have been going, Oh my God, f***ing Terminator 6? Let it die, for f***'s sake!'" he laughed. "But I'm directing it and I know the story and I know there's a reason to tell this story and not the least of which is because Sarah Connor never returned to the franchise in the same way and I wanted to see what happens next."

He knows how the fanbase thinks so I don't feel he'll just **** it up, especially with JC micromanaging.

Actually pretty optimistic for this and hope this doesn't suck!

Even putting aside quality of directing work, Terminator 3-5 focused too much on fan service and not enough on the vision of dark future, themes and drama. In all honesty, involvement of Jim and Linda doesn't bring peace of mind, but maybe gives a bit of hope. It won't be a great Terminator film just because Linda is in it, obviously. Only if Miller pulled off top directing work and the film itself has something to say to audiences beyond "check it out, we have Arnold and Linda, strong women and another new T series".

It makes me particularly happy to hear Miller talking about the "rules" of the franchise. It won't make or break a film, but the lazy approach to time travel and time-lines in 3-5 is something that really wound me up. It's really hard to invest in a story when you can't get a grip on its internal logic or stakes.

I'm curious as to whether this film is post-judgement day. It seems to be at least partially set in Mexico, which I believe was implied to be a "safe" zone from the Skynet attack.

Honestly I hope they try to use as much practical effects as possible. Genisys looked worse than T2. Even the CGI on the T-1000 and whatever John Connor was looked worse than T2.

I imagine they'll use it where applicable, but Miller owns a CG company and Cameron has been spearheading new digital tech consistently for 30 years.

Both then to have a better eye/higher standards than what we saw in T:G though, so hopefully that works in this movies favour.

Ready for this one. Terminator comes out November 1st, so I might check it out a day earlier on Halloween.

I'm not expecting much practical effects. But I'm expecting convincing digital effects. It's Miller's bread and butter.

Then it begs the question of Dark Fate

What happens to Kyle Reese in this timeline? Or what happens to John in this timeline? I mean we know Kyle Reese is born after 1997...in fact he is born in 2002 right? Taking us into 2019 with Dark Fate Kyle he would be 17 years old, a full on teenager. However, then wouldn't Skynet just be able to go after Kyle especially if he is supposed to father John? Cue Linda Hamilton...wouldn't she as Sarah want to protect teenage Kyle? However, then you cue the new characters like Grace and the Ramos siblings Dani and her brother. We know that Grace apparently she is supposed to be a human/hybrid Terminator so if that is the case and she is here essentially to protect Dani then that means Dani must be important in the future but then how about her brother? Wouldn't he be just as important?

Arnold we know his Terminator is supposed to be a villain but then how about Gabriel Luna's Terminator is he also a villain? Or is he a good guy?

Then if Gabriel's Terminator is also a villain you have 2 Terminators going after the same person but then wouldn't that just be counter productive?

Dark Fate if John is supposedly alive then that means John he must have had to have faked his death somehow and John must have went underground and he is in hiding. Or if John is dead then wouldn't that also be counter productive because Skynet cannot exist without John Connor. Skynet essentially needs John Connor especially if it means carrying out its mission because no John Connor, then there is no future war. Besides wouldn't it make sense for Sarah to have other children besides John? That is something that I have never ever understood is why she never had any other children after John? Because if she did then even if Skynet had successfully killed John Connor then she would still have other children who could become mankind's savior.

Same fate as in T1. That and T2 are still cannon in relation to this.

As this film follows Sarah, it's entirely possible that John is roughly 35 and preparing/fighting the war already, while Reese is a prisoner of Skynet, as they would be according to the timeline of the originals. Very curious.

Is Dark Fate the final title?

I believe it is still the working title at the moment.

Just having another child doesn’t mean that child would be the same as John or do what John did.
