Action-Adventure Terminator: Dark Fate

Fans of the Terminator franchise cheering on a Terminator movie failing to make a more money. Something about that doesn't seem right. If you don't like the movie, that's fine. Gloating over this movie not pulling in big money though feels disrespectful to the franchise.

There is a reason people avoid fandoms. The fans **** on anything they don't like and are harsh to anyone who disagrees. This attitude is the very reason I avoid the forums below. The polarization of these franchises makes it impossible to be anything but love or hate it.

I don't see any reason to come into a thread and trash the movie just because it failed to live up to your impossible expectations. It was the best movie we've had in nearly 30 years but that is irrelevant because too many of you decided to hate it before a single frame was shot.

To those of you who actually enjoyed it, glad at least someone else could enjoy it. I won't stick around this thread while people cheer on the death of a movie that doesn't deserve it.

I think it’s a shame this movie is failing but at the same time I can’t exactly blame audiences not lining up to yet another Terminator movie that already looked pretty generic and uninspired to begin with. I just don’t agree with people who say the previous lackluster movies were to blame for this film flopping(hardly anyone remembers the previous bad ones). If anything, I think it’s failure has more to do with the fact that the Terminator series itself just doesn’t lent itself to being a franchise like other IP are like Jurassic Park or Star Wars. Terminator just doesn’t resonate with people today like it did in the 80’s. This series doesn’t have a lot of range in terms of what direction you can take it in.

So it’s perhaps best to finally put this series to rest.

I do think that these movies as big action blockbusters may not be the way forward. But, would the fans accept smaller, quieter movies?

I know I personally would like some other media going over what Sarah did since T2 in this continuity.

This was good. Of course it wasn't as good as the first two movies but I liked it. It was great to see Linda Hamilton as Sarah Connor again.
I didn't like that they ruined T2's happy ending by killing John. The new bad guy terminator was great but I think he found the good guys too easily many times in the movie. I wonder if we see Arnold in the future movies if they happen? Maybe he plays young cgi version of himself. Like Samuel L. Jackson in Captain Marvel.

It's time for Hollywood to just let go of the Terminator franchise.

Hollywood will never let this franchise die. Even if it bombs(which it has) . They will leave it alone for a few years and then out of nowhere. The next instalment will be announced. Funny how Reece's statement about how persistent Terminators are rings true to the people green lighting these films.

Yeah, I'll be surprised if we won't get another one in 4-5 years. They will bring Robert Patrick back this time. Maybe even Furlong. With promos promising how the real hero of Terminator movies is John Connor and with the actor back in the role, it will finally be a REAL TRUE (swear on my ma) sequel to T2.

I'm sad about this bombing bad and apparently it's the worst of the series in profit already but I understand why some people arent interested anymore!

If they won't let go of the franchise on film then either do a future war film or reboot T1 completely and do a horror/thriller film again

The film failing to actually justify it's more controversial story elements is more disrespectful to the franchise than anything the fans can throw at it. That's my biggest issue with this, it's not what they did, it's that they failed to narratively justify why they did it and the stuff with Arnie is painfully ****ing stupid.

Nothing is more disrespectful than Emelia Clarke and Jai Courtney.

Interesting discussion here. I haven't seen the film myself , but as a genXer who basically grew up with the first two films in real time, I do think its time to sort of let this franchise be. The first to films are great films. At the same ,you had to be living in the 1980s and early 1990s for the idea of the post cold war future, to really resonate in the way they did. I don't know if those stories resonate , for example ,for people born after 2000.

The first two films really were products of their time, and came at the right time. T1 and T2 were made and released in a world before the internet, self driving cars, iphones, itunes, suri, etc. It was a time when the idea of a car that could talk , ala the tv show Knight Rider , was considered sci fi.

It was also a different era of films in which a big name stars like Arnold, Sly, Harrison Ford, could be enough to open a film regardless of the subject of the film.

The question at this point , as Arnold and Linda are aging , is is it real worth it to continue to try to keep/reboot the story going with new characters in film after film,( iT3 to TDF), to audiences (who are more and more generations removed from the first two), and to whom audiences are "meh" at best to.

We haven’t seen the last of the Terminator franchise. Hollywood is too damn devoid of any new ideas to move on from what was successful in the past

I doubt we will see a sequel to Dark Fate considering how bad it did this weekend. What I would be interested in seeing though is a Terminator series taking place in the future right at the height of the war between men and Skynet. John Connor doesn’t have to necessarily be the focus but can be a presence throughout the show. Have it centered on a group of Resistance fighters part of Connor’s unit or a group in another part of the world considering this was a worldwide catastrophe and not just in LA

I’m sure Netflix would be all over this and would be something new to bring to the franchise. It can also help make up for Fox cancelling Sarah Connor Chronicles

Just came from watching Dark Fate and honestly I had low expectations going in because of the trailers and all the backlash it was getting. Went in and was pleasantly surprised at how good it was. Hell, as far as sequels go, this film is a worthy successor to T2: Judgment Day (1991) but what makes this film work is mostly Linda Hamilton and Arnold Schwarzenegger. However, for me Mackenzie Davis steals the show as Grace.

I heard this picture was really entertaining and much better than prior movies but it will unfortunately have a Dark Fate at the box office given this weekend’s estimates. Dark Fate indeed

Honestly this film is much better than Genisys, Salvation and Rise of the Machines and that is saying a lot. It is still not as good as T1 or T2 but it is pretty damn close. Even if it is a retread well of Sarah's story but with this new character of Dani...they at least make it work and build on it.

Pity that Dark Fate is bombing.
It deserved a better reception.

What kind of justification would make you feel better about it.

Given this movie craps on T2. It's no wonder that older generation crowd didnt show up, and new one simply is not interested after Genysis.

This movie failed to capture either of those audiences. While movie is maybe better from quality standpoint from previous ones not respecting most succesful Terminator movie lead to this.

Agreed. The first few minutes definitely will piss off fans of the first two. It definitely made me a little upset. But I was able to look past it because the rest of the movie hooked me in.
