Action-Adventure Terminator: Dark Fate

Just needs the right team.

Imo, 12 Monkey this *****...

Just watched recently and I really rather enjoyed Dark Fate. And, to be honest... it’s probably the closest this series will get to ending on a high note.

Leave it be.

Imagine a t800 encased in a derelict building - it had been sent back in time like many others to assonate certain people - one was sent to JC, another some random dude in Asia, another in Europe - there were side stories which we never heard, this could be explored, but my story... this terminator is basically trapped so shuts himself off 'sleep mode' if you will.

Far into the future, after judgment day, after the war... humans won and life is very very different circa 2040/50... it's mildly recognizable but it's naturally different. It's calmer, cleaner, less negative, peace is the key, humans have finally learnt?

Some excavation of an old site, to rebuild reveals a familiar metallic endoskeleton arm.. it twitches as light hits it, dried blood shows its an injured arm, but not decomposed - it grabs the face of the worker, crushes his skull in a second, people jolt, scream, running away - out of the ashes rises an aged, but deadly t800. How do the community fight back in a world that has remembered the terror, but forgotten the plight.

What happens when a terminator wakes up to find his kind failed and he is the last. what do they do?

I can't call it 'terminator:reboot' can I, lol??

There are a few ways to go about it, not all are good ideas but if just imagine they turned out well.

1) A complete Reboot of T1, this will probably contain more future war scenes and complete the loop.
Go with a medium budget and back to the horror roots of the film. Perhaps for tension sake don't reveal who is the good guy or bad guy until towards the end of the film (take notes from The Guest)

The machines and future war will unfortunately look different to Cameron's as he wouldn't be directing it. I wouldn't go as far as the Dark Fate future war, it just didn't really seem to make sense with the tentacle machines and the resistance having their own decent supply of machines to fight back with.

2) A classic Cameron prequel/sequel Future War film. Don't worry about the events after T2, show us how it all began from the futures perspective. Written by yours truly
TERMINATOR: No seasons

3) Another official 3rd entry but this time the war didn't happen, the world is living in a kind of happy utopia (but is it ever really?). This time rather than Skynet nuking the world their plan is to turn humans against one another so they can never join up and fight back against Skynet and Skynet sits back sipping cocktails looking up at the nuclear cloud the humans did all them selves. Heavily inspired by They Live. Its kind of a Blomkamp meets Ridley Scott future.

Finally watched Dark Fate and enjoyed it for the most part. Thing is that the beginning really starts it off on the wrong foot and kind of overshadows all the good. It’s like Alien 3, all the work and sacrifice that characters you invested in went though feels cheapened for shock value that doesn’t really feel earned.

I watched behind the scene stuff for this I was blown away how they did the younger Sarah, Terminator and John

Not bad. I think something could be done with that.

Dark Fate was a good movie for me and would have been a good jumping off point for this new trilogy.

Unfortunately Genesis and Salvation in part just meant it was dead in the water. And they under estimated the pull of JC as a producer. I think had they wait a couple more years DF could have been successful. As I said above the different timeline thing with the different machines of Legion and Skynet fighting each other could have been really cool.

I see Davis has come out and said the sequels to Dark Fate would have explored different time lines. That could have been really interesting and it's a shame we won't get to see it.

Would have loved to see Skynet Vs Legion.

Maybe we see something similar in a TV show some day.

How much could you explore the timelines in general in TR?
Unless its about the War, what is there to explore really?
If you stop the terminator then live goes on either way, how would Dark Fate sequels even have explored the timelines more when we to begin with, dont have too much to go with?

Terminator for the most part is pretty tight contained with a Terminator going back in time to kill someone and another coming to stop that.
Other than that, you pretty much just have this idea of a War against machines etc.
But what else is there?

On that i thought Genisys had a cool idea with giving Skynet a form etc.

But to be fair, i dont remember much from Dark Fate so maybe they put more into the narrative to go forward.

I've said this before, but if they want to continue telling stories in this world they need to move things forward. Show me what the future looks like down the line after humanity has won. Our relationship with tech has changed since the 80s. Play with that. Our view of good vs. evil has also changed. Play with that too.

I think there's more wiggle room in a Terminator-adjacent setting that gets into the legacy of it all. Kinda like HBO's Watchmen.

Either a War or a post war movie yeah, but there is not much more you can do otherwise with it.
Now they tried a Alternative Timeline that didnt do anything really new.

Well Dark Fate was a new timeline which didn't have Skynet, it had Legion instead, Grace hadn't even heard of Skynet.

Then you had the Rev-9 commenting to the T-800 about them standing together, and the latter rejecting that. So Skynet was still around somewhere, hence Sarah still hunting Terminators throughout the years.

So Skynet facing down Legion in the new timeline with Humans in the middle would have been interesting for the sequels IMO and a new direction at least.

I really didn't think it was that great. I refer to as Terminator: John has to go to school.

Why are they hanging out in suburban areas and not just continuing their training? Sarah was made out to be a bit of a dip **** and it just started to feel like every cheap TV series where it ends in a warehouse.

I'll give them some points for doing the future war scenes justice and sticking to the original look with their budget but as a whole the show was pretty rubbish. Imo of course
I think John and Sarah have to remain inconspicuous, as they search for the origins of Skynet. Where did Sarah be made out to particularly be like that? How many times did it end in a warehouse, like that?

Other things happen in that. I think John's school experiences are mostly being phased out into season 2.

For me the first 20 minutes before Sarah showed up was the best part of the movie. Interestingly the same thing happened in The Force Awakens when Han came in. That said, this movie didn't do anything particularly compelling with the franchise to make me want to see another with these characters. It was just...fine.

To me the more interesting movie was Carl’s story. He carried out his orders and is now a soldier without a war, an assassin without a target, and somehow he formed a family and lived a decent life before being called upon to atone for his sins. Thing is that movie probably wouldn’t be very action packed till the end.

If I were doing Terminator film, I would do a series set in the Future War. But honestly, my general feeling is the same as it is for Predator: I am done with the series until an actual good film comes out. Terminator has sucked since after T2. Just varying degrees of trash. I have no interest in sitting through more trash. Dark Fate may have sucked less than Genysis.....but it was still steaming hot garbage.

Grace was just unnecessary to the plot. Take her out and just do a story with Sarah and Carl protecting Dani from the Rev 9 and you have a more streamlined narrative that actually focuses on the most interesting parts.

There were actual good ideas in Dark Fate and the final battle for me was pretty cool but there was just too much water under that bridge. The brand has been tainted beyond repare.

I think at this point, if they want to move forward, it needs to be totally disconnected from previous movies.

It can be set in the 80s, they can have a t800 if needed.... but it needs wholly new original characters and I would stick to the formula of the first, small scale, suspense horror...

I have always said Henry Cavill would be an excellent T800. His topless JL scene against the leaguers shows this.

I would also have fun with it, have Henry play the human version too, throughout the movie the t800 learns more to be 'human like' so by the end, you kinda can't tell who is who.

Anyways... I feel like similar movies could be made, but it just feels 'easier' to slap the terminator tag on.

The guest pretty much is a remake of The Terminator and better than any of the sequels post T2

Dark Fate had good ideas. Those good ideas were just better when it was called The Terminator and T2: Judgement Day

I wouldn't say so. The idea of what happens to a Terminator after he... 'terminates' wasn't explored before. Granted I don't think they did a great job with it, but there was an interesting twist there to do something with.

I thought that sort of ruined the mystique of the Terminator, honestly. The Terminator is supposed to be something scary. Something you can't reason with or bargain with. Not some comedic robot. Hated it

The idea of Carl is fine, I just don't think it was done well, but very little in this movie was.

They should leave this franchise alone. There's not much more you can do with it.

Eh, I mean T2 ruined the mystique then if that’s the case. Terminators learning to be human was like the entire emotional core of that movie.

I liked Carl personally and the movie should’ve just put more focus on him from the beginning. There was a cool, existentialist sorta action film here. The inescapable nature of our pasts and futures and how they collide. They really missed the mark by just diluting the first two flicks sadly.
