Terminator: Genisys - Part 6

The clips that have been released online show scenes that feel horribly directed. Looks like Kevin Feige was right to boot Alan Taylor off Thor. He appears to be a hack.

He needs to go back to television.

Gotta see this opening weekend to get my thoughts, though these early reviews dont inspire much confidence.
The critics can suck it, for the moment I reserve my opinions until I see the movie.

Well its not like Thor is that great that it requires an A-list director.

I like the Variety review. The Terminator is kinda meta: Constantly trying to go back to fix the past (the series).

I'm not going to say anything about the reviews until more of them come out, it's too early to say anything one way or another on that front.

Anyway I hate when people use their phone during the movie. It's rude and damn sure shouldn't be encouraged.

You said yourself that T1 is a closed loop, meaning it only takes place in one universe. That means that the time travel equipment they use doesn't jump into other universes.

Actually I just realized I'm wrong about this. In T1 Reese explicitly mentions that there are multiple timelines.

REESE:
John gave me a message for you. Made me memorize it. 'Sarah"...this is the message... 'Sarah, thank you. For your courage through the dark years. I can't help you with what you must soon face, except to tell you that the future is not set... there is no such thing as Fate, but what we make for ourselves by our own will. You must be stronger than you imagine you can be. You must survive, or I will never exist.' That's all.

James Cameron: I asked myself a hypothetical question: what if you could you grab a line of history like it's a rope stretched between two points, and just pull it out of the way? If you can pull it just a little bit out of the way then cut it at that moment, maybe you could change it and history could go in a slightly different direction. Like the catastrophe theory. If you could actually do that you would get a future that no longer exists except in the memories of the people who are here now. They have a memory of a future that will never happen, which is curious, because it defies our Newtonian view of the world. But couldn't it be possible? That became my point of departure. It's like the Terminator is an anomaly of our time because he's the only one who has memories of a time that will never exist. His particular future does not exist anymore.

Brother came back and said he walked out half way through :funny:

Final Thoughts
Finally Terminator Genisys provides a worthy sequel to T2: Judgement Day, rebooting the future of the Terminator franchise in some interesting ways. However, Alan Taylor’s film can not compare to the James Cameron classic, and if you’re expecting another T2 you will be very disappointed. Genisys honors the first two Cameron films in a number of ways, and you would really benefit by revisiting The Terminator before seeing this movie. Arnold Schwarzenegger is this film’s main attraction, bringing humor and heart back to the franchise, which were missing from both Terminator Salvation and Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines.

The film’s biggest problem is that Jai Courtney, as Kyle Reese, lacks the charisma to lead this blockbuster film, and thus the chemistry at the heart of this story’s love story seems non existent. Also, if you can avoid trailers or any of the film’s marketing materials as they unfortunately give away a rather huge middle of the film twist.

If you’re a fan of the first two Terminator films, I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised by Terminator Genisys as I was. It’s a fun summer movie that lets us re-explore the characters and universe we enjoyed, without feeling like just another money-grubbing rehash.

That line isn't in the movie.

Edit: Actually, it totally is. I confused it with "no hope but what we make for ourselves" which isn't part of the message.

Concerning the physics of time travel, it is worth recalling that James Cameron has an undergraduate degree in physics.

I think that makes him the second most educated physicist among the great directors.

That line does not explicitly state there are multiple timelines. And that line is clearly rooted in human naivete. Because one often meets fate on the path taken to avoid it.

I'm not surprised by the early bad reviews.

This film expects you to forgo the first few films yet at the same time embrace this new one because of your love for the first two films.

This franchise, along with many in Hollywood, needs to RIP.

Reese never actually says during that speech "there is no such thing as fate, but what we make for ourselves, by our own will". He only says the rest of what you posted. So I would revise your thinking, he does say " the future is not set" so there is a suggestion of multiple timelines but the rest of the movie suggests otherwise. The "no fate but what we make" line was first heard in T2.

Actually, Cameron enrolled at a two-year community college, to study physics, but switched to English, then dropped out before the start of the second year, which is when he became a truck driver. An undergraduate degree in physics that does not make.

Paul Verhoevrn has a PhD in physics.

He has an old-form Dutch degree that is the equivalent of a Masters of Science, not an actual PhD. Impressive nonetheless.

I hope its entertaining but so far it just reeks lazy filmmaking or someone who has no idea what there doing.

Does emilia clarke strike anyone as arrogant the way she talks to the camera And leans to her right all the time like shes Taking a break from a conversation to talkn to the camera?

Dont get me wrong shes sexy and all but shes kind of off putting in interviews.

James Cameron does not have a degree of any kind. He dropped out of college and became a truck driver.

And I'll reiterate this. The no fate line was ultimately meant as a motivational tool to keep fighting.

Also, consider this line from Connor in T3:

"Imagine if you knew you were gonna do something important. Maybe the most important thing anyone has ever done. But there's a catch: something terrible has to happen. You couldn't live with yourself if you didn't try to stop it."

No surprise here with the Jai Courtney comment. He's quickly becoming one of my most hated actors/actresses along with Michelle Rodriguez.

I was looking at some pictures of Boyd Holbrook because at one point, he was in the running for Kyle Reese. When I was watching The Terminator at the theater last week, I couldn't help but see Holbrook in Michael Biehn.

Similar look and his build is perfect for Reese. I've never really seen him in anything so I can't say how he would have been but it makes me wonder.
