Im tired of hearing that we cant compare it to good movies...just because its a sequel to 2 of the greatest action movies doesnt mean we cant compare it. What should we be comparing it to then?

Agree, down with the loser talk.

We used to say that about Channing Tatum.
Look what happened.

He found a movie series that is more about looks than acting and surrounds him with better looking men? Oh and 21 Jumpstreet movies.:o

In addition to the 21 Jump Street series, he got quitev a few good reviews for Foxcather.
He heard the criticisms about his acting and worked hard to improve.
Could happen with Courtney as well.
You never know.

friend just wrote on facebook that this was the best terminator by far

Hopefully, I will find out for musrlf on Saturday .
I am looking forward to it.

Tatum has discovered he has charisma, that's the thing. I won't pretend he's the best actor, but he knows how to be likable onscreen and off now, and kind of self deprecating. You can't be standoffish in this business unless you're a top tier thespian.

Okay, just saw it.

I'll preface this by saying T2 is an action masterpiece and is a movie I absolutely worship (that + being a huge Jim Cameron fanboy), I also love T1 that I watched again a week ago to prepare myself for this one, and it still holds up great, excellent but not on the same level as T2.

Terminator Genisys is nowhere near as bad as some would lead you to believe, it is messy yup, it's kind of a cluster**** because of the time travel aspect and it is quite convoluted, and there is so much exposition that feels like handholding for the general audience, and I can't really blame that considering that the people who didn't see the first two and see this one (there probably will be) are going to be just completely confused for two hours.

There are some legit good moments in the movie, off the top of my head:
recreating iconic moments for T1 & T2 but reversing it and putting a spin on it, the Sarah flashback with the guardian (which, as it's been said in some places, could totally be a movie of itself, I'd love to see that), some quieter moments like Sarah & Kyle in that locker room where Kyle promises to protect her no matter what, the John Connor twist, etc, etc, the climax is good too

Most of all, I'd say it's competently made, which isn't going to sound like high praise but really, considering how dreadful it's supposed to be according to critics, it is something. It's overall well shot, if not unremarkable, you don't have the grit that the first two had, that's also because it's shot digitally, but it could have used some more grit, more texture.

I like the opening, it works and seeing how they revisit those moments while playing with them, it's fun to see, you can already see the over exposition from the beginning though, the characters always discussing time travel and how super duper complicated it all is, there's humor injected throughout the movie regarding that, but it's not really funny, not that I care though.

There's a lot going on in the movie, and it's easy to get lost I think with all the moving pieces and time travel stuff, but I like the idea of them
going 20 years INTO the future
and all that, I think it works.

The John Connor stuff, man, I wish they hadn't spoiled that, it would have been much more effective to just experience that onscreen, I think it's a cool twist and idea, when I read about it, it sounded really stupid but it actually works within the context of the movie.

What I like about the movie is that although it's very messy, and sometimes feels like pure fan fiction, like a Terminator nerd just blew his load on paper thinking about how you could twist and turn the mythology and all that, but at least, it's trying a lot, there's ambition.

Now of course, it has problems: poor Jai Courtney (I don't have much love for him but he still needs to prove himself) is getting hammered everywhere and I can see why, poor chap can't help it if his face is one of those that has a bland quality to it, you got actors that are super expressive and others that aren't. I do NOT think that he is a BAD actor, just that he needs to work within that limited range that he has.

He's getting hammered because let's be honest, Biehn IS Kyle Reese, and even though Yelchin did a really good job in Salvation, there's just nothing like Biehn. Courtney is bland here, like he was bland in Die Hard, he's not awful at all here, he just suffers majorly in comparison, Biehn just had that intense, edgy quality to him, this worn face, you could feel the years of being at war, a soldier.

Courtney is there, that's it, he's there and he does the job, he goes through the motions, I'm sure he does his best but he's just not fit to be a leading man, I would have wanted to see Boyd Holbrook take on the role instead, he would have killed it, like slayed it.

Emilia Clarke is fine as Sarah Connor, she just (once again) suffers in comparison to Linda Hamilton, she's just too pretty and sweet looking to be completely convincing. Brie Larson would have been a much more interesting choice.

Anyway, let's not rewrite history, we got those two, they're not miscast I'd say, they're just there and do the job, it could be much worse and I know it's not high praise, but hey, it'll do.

Arnold is his usual self and is the soul & heart of the whole goddam series.

Jason Clarke did well (he's a really fine actor) as John Connor.

Byung Hun Lee is fine as the T1000, cool to see the character again.

NOT ENOUGH JK Simmons though !!! His character is a lot of fun and he should have been given more to do, in any capacity, a welcome addition.

The VFX work is solid, I disagree with some complaints I've seen in some reviews, there are some shoddy shots here & there like in every CG heavy movie but young Schwarzy looks pretty impressive, it's not 100 % there, but a very good effort, Connor looks good too. There is however an action piece involving helicopters that had me rolling my eyes "PHYSICS ?!!!! NOPE !", that looked funky.

The ending is good I think, and I was kind of wondering how they could do two more movies until the mid credits scene showed up. I'm legit curious to see what they're going to do with the sequel.

Overall, it's very very far away from T1 & T2, better than T3 (which isn't as horrible as many say) & Salvation (that I actually like), it is entertaining, enjoyable, pretty much what I expected.

How old was Sarah suppose to be in this movie? I felt like she was 17..

Same as in T1, so around 20-ish I believe. Pretty sure they mentioned the date of her birth, or the year she met Arnie and what age she was then, but it has slipped my mind.

I might go and see this at the weekend, haven't yet decided due to the very mixed reviews.

Whilst I can't vouch personally for the quality of the film, I will say this : the marketing has been absolute rubbish. I remember salivating over every trailer for T2 back in 1991, and even T3 and T4 got me somewhat hyped even though they turned out to be poor. This film has not done anything to entice me to go and watch it; dubious promotional shots, giving away large parts of the storyline (from what I hear) in trailers, and so on.

It's more than charisma he as lot of has better roles are showing his charisma.

But then there's Foxcatcher. Which was just straight acting.

Tatum has talent beyond charisma.

Now I don't know about Coutney. Personally I dont think he's that bad. I thought he was fine in AGDTDH, I just thought the movie was sh**.
And this I just don't think he's right for Kyle

nice review. what was the mid credit clip?

Well, Cyberdyne is supposed to have been destroyed along with Skynet (or its manifestation as Matt Smith), everything"s destroyed and ****, and we see a red core in a sphere, which I'm guessing is like the main cpu, and we see the hologram of Matt Smith aka Skynet looking at it.

Why is it that the "it was okay" reviews sound a bit more level-headed than the straight up "kill it with fire" ones....must...not...get optimistic...

I don't know, I just can't even feign having high expectations for this. Nothing has looked good (except the CG Arnie stuff), the last two movies have already tarnished the franchise, there's no reason for me to have super high expectations other than simply wanting to go harsh on it for failing to live up to them. After the reviews I was leaning towards skipping it, but my friend who's going through a rough time wants to see it to get his mind off stuff, so I'm gonna go with him.

They should do a "critics" TV spot that features some quotes from some of the "meh" reviews.

THIS WEEKEND, SEE THE MOVIE THAT CRITICS ARE CALLING "MEDIOCRE" AND "OKAY"!!! TERMINATOR GENISYS... IT'S NOT AS BAD AS YOU THINK!

Can someone tell me what the ending is like as I've heard it's supposed to hint at a sequel if Paramount are crazy enough to green light one.

Imagine this franchise tackling multi-verses.

With Time travel you could say they're alternate or aborted timelines. It would be wicked crazy to have all the Terminator universes in jeopardy.
So Terminator: Crisis on Infinite Earths then?

It'd be awesome if done well, as well as reconciling the existences of T3, TS and Sarah Connor Chronicles.

But it *must* be someone like Bryan Singer or JJ Abrams helming it; def not Taylor again...

The first thirty minutes are awesome. When Reese is talking about August 29, 1997 and John is giving his speech to the troops and telling Kyle his message to Sarah, I'm absolutely geeking out.

Then we get to 1984 and we've got the garbage truck driver (probably the best casting in the movie), and CG Arnold looking awesome, and Reese stealing the hobo's pants. Great!

But then it goes in a different direction and I'm wondering what happened to the Terminator movie I was enjoying. And that's not to say I didn't enjoy the rest of the movie, I did overall but in my eyes, it was hurt by playing up to the original.

So to me, it's almost two movies. Thirty minutes of Terminator and an hour and a half of a pretty decent sci fi action movie called Genisys.
The garbage truck driver wasn't fat and big-nosed with a wheezing voice like in the original though. I was disappointed about that, but the shot recreation from T1 in that scene was damn near spot-on.
