Some friends are talking about going to see this tonight and I haven't decided if I will waste my money on it yet. From what I've been hearing though it sounds like I should skip it
Same as in T1, so around 20-ish I believe. Pretty sure they mentioned the date of her birth, or the year she met Arnie and what age she was then, but it has slipped my mind.
Looks like this movie may come in second or even third this weekend, depending on how well the legs are for JW and IO. Magic Mike seems to be the winner by luring in many female moviegoers.
I've seen this movie twice. I am trying to work my way through my feelings about it. I was having a hard time trying to figure out where to rank this film last night, but after watching it a second time, I'm tentatively putting it third behind the first Terminator and Judgment Day. I don't know how much that's because of nostalgia or just being happy to immerse myself in the Terminator universe again.
Fourth would be Rise of the Machines and fifth would be Salvation. That being said, I didn't hate Salvation. I was disappointed that Salvation wasn't true to its original idea, which is ironic in light of what we got in Genisys.
One of Rise of the Machine's saving graces was the ending, which I thought was bold, but what Genisys did throughout potentially could be even bolder, so I've got to give it points for it.
I mean Genisys pretty much wipes out all of the films, even the first one. Or at least it pushes back the events to the 21st century. At the end of Genisys the heroes are aimless and Sarah and Kyle haven't hooked up so it's not a done deal that John Connor will be born.
As for Genisys itself I thought the movie was decent, but to me it requires an understanding or reverence for the first two Terminator films. I could see someone who is new to this and just coming to this movie on its own as being confused. I mean some of the time travel stuff was confusing and perhaps not helped by having Arnold be the one to explain a lot of the temporal stuff. And that was questionable about why he would know all that stuff anyway.
I liked Emilia Clarke more than I thought I would. She was a combination of the T1 and T2 Sarah Connors. Granted she perhaps could've been a bit harder physically and grittier. But overall I thought she did well.
I thought it was a little strange calling Arnold "Pops", but it wasn't that bad. It wasn't cringe inducing. And they did develop a father-daughter relationship between Arnold and Sarah. It's interesting how T2 had the father-son relationship between Arnold and John and now its Arnold and Sarah.
As many have already pointed out Jai Courtney was a weak link. He was competent in the action scenes, but he just didn't have the desperation. I wish they had gotten Yelchin back for this. Overall though I thought all of the Resistance fighters were pretty well fed, and pretty well armed too.
I wish things had been handled differently with John Connor. The trailers ruined what could've been a great "oh crap" moment.
Making him a Terminator, I wish they had done that in Salvation instead. But with him as a Terminator in this film, I liked the design but I didn't think his powers were distinct enough. I had thought the Terminatrix wasn't distinct enough from the T-1000, but even she had some different powers. I wish more had been done to make the Connor Terminator stand out more. Give him some different abilities.
I still prefer Christian Bale as Connor. I liked Jason Clarke more in the Planet of the Apes movie more than I did here. He's not bad but I didn't quite buy him as this inspirational leader.
I wish more had been done with J.K. Simmons. That he could've gotten into the action a bit more. He brought a little levity, but actually I wouldn't have minded if he had added a little bit more humor.
Arnold was good, of course. I mean it was just good to see him again. I thought the old Arnold vs. young Arnold fight was okay in theory, but it was too CGI heavy for my taste. I enjoyed his fights against the other Terminators more.
I didn't care for making Arnold/Guardian a T-1000 at the end. I liked his "final" words to Reese when he was in the time machine. I thought that was a good way for him to go out. And it did show that he cared for Sarah in a way you wouldn't think would be possible for a machine to do, which of course doesn't make much sense, but it's emotionally satisfying watching it in a film. Bringing him back undercut his sacrifice. Also the mid-credits scene sort of made the big battle at Cyberdyne pointless as well.
Another thing that I wish happened was getting
Joe Morton
back. I think that would've been cool. Also if they had gotten
Dr. Silberman.
More cameos from some Terminator actors past like Bill Paxton would've been great too. Granted they could play other/new characters.
I was surprised by the film. They approached time travel from a whole new more modern angle in theoretical physics, i.e. Many Worlds Theory.
The Skynet that converts John Connor using nanites isn't from that universe, but from a parallel universe. Assimilated John Connor even explains his view to Sarah and Kyle that they are all temporal refugees or exiles, which is why it wouldn't matter if he killed them or not. He would not cease to exist by killing Sarah because that universe has already happened. It seems that the new Skynet understands the futility of trying to change the future, but instead wants to assimilate all of humanity into a new machine order.
It wasn't perfect by any means, but it was not as bad as I thought it would be. I think some of the plot may be too complex for modern audiences. There wasn't enough exposition to really explain fully what was happening for most people, it especially needed more info on parallel universes and Many World's Theory.
