Just watched it. Pretty surprised. It was somewhat decent. Certainly not the revolutionary masterpiece that is T1 and T2, but it's more creative than T3, and more entertaining that T4/S.

I'm honestly surprised by the hate it's receiving . I thought it was fun. There's good action , funny dialogue , and I even liked the twist. Also it was fun to see some of the original Terminator scenes recreated. I just wish they could of gotten other previous cast members back. The cast did ok. I'm not a fan of Jai Courtney but he didn't hurt the film.

Based on the various reviews, it sounds like this film doesn't have a clear target audience. So, what was the point?

Wow, this has just 25% on RT.

Is the movie really that bad?

Ehh I've never even been on RT but that sounds about right.

Nah. It's not that bad. And this is coming from someone who was 100% ready to hate this film.

It's nowhere near as T1 and T2, but its nowhere near as bad (or as pointless). I'd put it right in the middle, above Salvation.

7.5/10 for me. I still think they should've cast Brie Larson and Boyd Holbrook as Sarah and Kyle, but Clark and Courtney did alright with was was given to them.

If you say "its not that bad", doesn't that still means it bad? :funny:

Mostly I was just reminded of how much more I like the scenes in context.

Jai Courtney wasn't terrible but I still feel he was completely miscast.

Emily Clarke though just got on my nerves throughout.

For Terminator? Never.

For me Terminator is like Alien. After those first two classics you better bring the best you have. I mean i can't think of anything i liked here besides Arnold. I saw it two nights ago and have already forgotten most of it. It may not be absolutely terrible but i don't find it good either, and i can't just be ok with that with a Terminator film.

For work, I had to take some teenagers to see the film. They had never seen the originals. They liked it. They didn't realize the jokes and callbacks were references. They were particularly impressed by the T-1000.

That's kind of the problem with many of these sequels and reboots. Their most positive attributes are just the things that were impressive literal decades ago. While the effects in this new film are solid, why the hell wouldn't they be? A modern film having solid digital effects is simply par for the course and given their budget they would have no excuse if they weren't up to snuff.

Meanwhile, the insane real stuntwork of the Mad Max series is impressive no matter when it is produced and they found new ways to be inventive with the stunts and effects and costumes in the new installment.

It's just weird to me how this reboot or whatever is seemingly going about things. It's PG-13 to get the widest audience possible. But, the younger audience is likely not attached to the franchise in any way and they make callbacks to the original films. They seem to be going against what people originally liked about the films. So it's a turn-off for part of the audience. Strange choices.

The first thirty minutes are awesome. When Reese is talking about August 29, 1997 and John is giving his speech to the troops and telling Kyle his message to Sarah, I'm absolutely geeking out.

Then we get to 1984 and we've got the garbage truck driver (probably the best casting in the movie), and CG Arnold looking awesome, and Reese stealing the hobo's pants. Great!

But then it goes in a different direction and I'm wondering what happened to the Terminator movie I was enjoying. And that's not to say I didn't enjoy the rest of the movie, I did overall but in my eyes, it was hurt by playing up to the original.

So to me, it's almost two movies. Thirty minutes of Terminator and an hour and a half of a pretty decent sci fi action movie called Genisys.

I'm still on the fence about whether I'm gonna see this one. Thinking I might catch it on a cheap Tuesday.

Weird thing is...I re-watched the first one today for the first time in a while. I'm gonna catch some heat for this, but it was kind of a rough watch. I kinda took off the nostalgia goggles for once, and man there's just so much cringe-worthy stuff in that movie. I know it's kind of an unfair comparison due to the difference in budget, and the original is more of a B-movie, etc. Even so I just think T2 trumps it in just about every way.

I'm really sorry, I know that's gonna be nails on a chalkboard for some of you and I hate to be that guy. By no means am I saying it's a bad movie, and I still give it a lot of credit for the great concept alone and being THE perfect vehicle for Arnold circa 1984, and have all the respect in the world for Cameron for pulling that off on a shoestring budget. I just finally have admitted to myself that T2 is the only film I truly love in this franchise.

Maybe the trick is to have low expectations?

No. The trick is to not expect it to be as good as T1 and T2. No Terminator film will ever be anywhere near as good as those were. Those were two of the greatest films of all time. To expect a future films to be as good (especially when they are being made by different directors, in a very different era of action movies) is foolish.

Once you accept that, you can see the new Terminator films in a better light and as their own thing; Not something that HAS to live up to what came before (an impossible feat).

Now, there's no, excuse for how bad T3 is. It's just bad. Just a terrible film, from head to toe. That said, Salvation ,and now Genisys, don't get enough credit. They are solid films, even if they aren't as great as T1/T2. That being what most criticisms seem to based in:

It's not as great as T1/T2.

Its not its own thing. That is kind of the point.

Also, one could have expected T2 not to measure up to T1 or Empire to not measure up to Star Wars. Same for Godfather Part 2, Aliens, Fury Road, so on and so forth.

Mad Max Fury Road perfectly builds upon and expands upon the Road Warrior, a comparably great 80s classic.

An absolutely great future war Terminator film could have been made by now but instead we've gotten 3, Salvation, and Genisys.

Genisys isn't as great as T1/T2. It can't even pull off the mediocrity of Salvation.

Bingo

Those of you who want good Terminator should watch the Sarah Connor Chronicles.
