I have no problem with movie directors who started on music videos. You have to start somewhere afterall and I'd rather it be from music videos where creativity is more valued than selling a product.

He is like Josh Trank in that he was an unproven or barely proven director give a huge property with a big budget and told to make something out of it where he was out of his league in the seat. I don't think Salvation was Fantastic Four bad although plenty of other fans would disagree with me on that.

His detractors are the ones who point to his directing start as if this makes him bad but to me he went from doing small budget to big budget way too quickly. Though I forgot he did direct those two Charlie's Angels movies of which is where the rumors about Bill Murray and Lucy Liu hating each other stem from; he apparently did not like McG but somehow people turned it into he hated Liu after some kind of disagreement over a scene.

McG is a proven hack at this point. I'd argue that he failed Terminator visually too. He took an iconic established look and turned it into Mad Max with sprinkles of Transformers. He had a much, much larger budget to work with, but couldn't create something as visually striking as Cameron did with the future sequences of the original.
