Deadline is reporting that the studios just simply made offers and are not in active talks.

'Terminator' talks no longer exclusive to Sony and Lions Gate

Sony Pictures and Lions Gate are no longer in the lead position to bring the Terminator back to the big screen.

An exclusive window granted by hedge fund Pacificor for the two studios to jointly negotiate to make the next "Terminator" film have expired, said two people familiar with the matter. The studios have made their offer, but are no longer in active talks, one of the people added.

Pacificor won the right to make future "Terminator" films at a controversial auction last week held by the former rights owner, bankrupt production shingle Halcyon Company. The hedge fund paid $29.5 million in exchange for forgiving debt that Halcyon owed it and also agreed to pay $5 million for each sequel produced.

In order to now make money off the rights, Santa Barbara-based Pacificor, which has no experience in the movie business, must enlist a studio or producers to develop, make and distribute a fifth "Terminator" picture.

Sony and Lions Gate jointly bid for the rights against Pacificor at last Monday's auction. After the hedge fund was declared winner, the two studios objected to the bidding procedures at a bankruptcy court hearing. However, Judge Ernest Robles rejected their claim and awarded the rights to Pacificor. The hedge fund then granted Sony and Lions Gate an exclusive -- and apparently pretty short -- window to negotiate a deal to produce and distribute a fifth "Terminator" movie.

In a press release issued today, Pacificor invited parties interested in making future "Terminator" films to reach out its attorneys at Latham & Watkins and said it has already been contacted by "numerous studios, producers, financiers and agents."

if I had a choice I'd want warner brother to get the franchise as they tend to get good directors with vision and then leave that director the hell alone to get on with it. I HATE sony after what happened with SM3.

So awesome to see that Cameron and I have the same view of the Terminator series.
"It's run its course" "The soup has been pissed in".

- James Cameron

If anything its good that these guys from Pacificor want to give this time.

Even though I think this entire series should be buried, its better that its owner's try shaping a good story out of something that has rendered itself redundant.

Everything that needed to be said was done in Terminator and T2.

T3/T3 apologists can't sue the 'Cameron liked it' excuse anymore, what he thinks can't be any more explicit. Of course, he may change his miond about getting involved, as he did with Spiderman, which he's apparently overseeing on a technical front, maybe he'll throw his good friend Wisher a bone.
Still, it's both good and bad news, no Cameron for Terminator puts Terminator at an end. He created everything in it, and it was all ran into the ground. The key hope for most fans was Cameron's return. Oh well, much success to him still.

You may not like his personality, but you can't deny that he has made some of the best action and sci-fi movies in his career.

Cameron will be the godfather for the Spiderman reboot :argh: just like with Nolan and Superman

Why does James Cameron not care that he comes across as an absolute ****? Is he that much of an egomaniac that he just doesn't care what anyone thinks? Linda Hamilton said he spent the Christmas following Titanic just ****ting on about how great the film was. What a self centred tool.

cameron could be the biggest arse on the face of the planet all I care about is I love his movies, its not as if I am ever going to meet him so I couldn't care less about his personality.

Agreed. A lot of artists I respect I probably wouldn't want to meet in real life. All I care is that I love their work.

ah, you know that he backs it up with his films. Its not like McG is saying this, He can be a tool as long as he wants as long as he is still making movies.

because he is.
Cameron wants to be a commercial director.and he is the best commercial director in hollywood. he has two movies that are liked by every age group. he got a lot of money in 1998 for Titanic and 11 oscars.

he is an as....... and he knows it.

Exactly, I couldnt care less if he is an ass, he is my favourite director because his movies for the most part are superb, thats all I care about.

I also don't give a damn if he's an arse... I give a damn about me liking only 3 of his films and despising the rest. IMO there are other directors that deserve much more the naming of "great director" than him... curiously enough... his two most smashing BO hits are his two worst movies, ironically...

Yeah, give him record breaking budgets specific to the time and he'll deliver all right.

Um, i'm straight but, I love you. James Cameron IMO = :down :down

If I have to be honest... I think he's the most talented technically... but he doesn't deliver his true potential... he just rejoices on his technical capability, which is enormous. But things like Piranha 2, True Lies or that Rambo II script... and Avatar because of the 3D thing, otherwise also a quite weak film...

Definitely, he knows how to push the technology, but I think the only film it really worked in was T2. Avatar looked pretty, but the story IMO was terrible. I couldn't get through True Lies......even Aliens, which I love, had some odd dialogue. I love good stories, I could care less about flashy effects.
