Terminator: Salvation - The NEW new thread

man that would be cool if cameron bought the rights back, but i highly doubt that will happen. But it would be a surprisely interesting move.

Like you said , it's veryy doubtful. The fact that he has said that the story has ended with T2, already you wonder why he would buy the rights.
And he has said in an interview that he was quite pissed with T3. Not so much with how the movie turned , just the way in which it was made ( him not being consulted etc).
The only reason why he would buy the rights would be to save the franchise from potential butchers but i think in his eyes the franchise has already reached that state.

I didn't hate T3 or Salvation, I just think that they are fairly mediocre movies that have soiled the franchise.

I wonder how long its going to take to we hear anything.

Terminator franchise is once again in hibernation.

I wish it would just die. There's no profitability in this franchise anymore. Its dead.

Whedon's gonna need work soon since his TV show is about to get canned.

'Terminator' to have new owner by January

He'll be back, but with a new owner.

An auction for the rights to make new "Terminator" movies will likely be done by January. Representatives for the Halcyon Co., which currently controls the franchise and filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in August, have set their plans to sell off the rights to pay debts and recapitalize their company.

Last month, Halcyon hired FTI Capital Advisors to put the rights up for sale and manage the process. According to Kevin Shultz, senior managing director of FTI, an auction is expected to be held by January at the latest, pending bankruptcy court approval. By later this month, Halcyon may choose a "stalking horse," a potential buyer whose early bid puts it in first position and gives it exclusive access to perform due diligence. Any other company that wanted to buy the "Terminator" rights would then have to outbid the stalking horse.

Sony Pictures and Warner Bros., which distributed May's "Terminator Salvation," are considering bids, according to people close to the companies, as is independent studio Summit Entertainment. However, Shultz said the final buyer may not come from Hollywood, but from the world of private equity.

"There are financial buyers who have expressed strong interest," he said.

Halycon paid $25 million to buy the "Terminator" rights in 2007. In a previous bankruptcy court filing, Halcyon Co-Chief Executive Derek Anderson said he believed they were now worth more than $60 million.

Whoever buys "Terminator" would get rights to make future sequels as well as Halcyon's remaining income from "Salvation," which cost about $200 million to produce and grossed a so-so $371 million worldwide. The fourth movie in the 25-year-old series will be released on DVD in December.

Makes you wonder where all that money goes.

Guess it really didn't do that well worldwide.

Yea its likely going to be sony or WB in the end. Who ever pony's more dough for it. As for Whedon i would be curious to see what he would. As for terminator i think there is plently more you can do with it.

Whedon sounds(comically) sincere about this. I hope he somehow against all odds gets it. He's my favorite tv/film creator of all time. Here's his letter about it...

An Open Letter to the Terminator Owners. From a Very Important Hollywood Mogul

Dear Sirs/Ma'ams,

I am Joss Whedon, the mastermind behind Titan A.E., Parenthood (not the movie) (or the new series) (or the one where 'hood' was capitalized 'cause it was a pun), and myriad other legendary tales. I have heard through the 'grapevine' that the Terminator franchise is for sale, and I am prepared to make a pre-emptive bid RIGHT NOW to wrap this dealio up. This is not a joke, this is not a scam, this is not available on TV. I will write a check TODAY for $10,000, and viola! Terminator off your hands.

No, you didn't miscount. That's four -- FOUR! -- zeroes after that one. That's to show you I mean business. And I mean show business. Nikki Finke says the Terminator concept is played. Well, here's what I have to say to Nikki Finke: you are a fine journalist and please don't ever notice me. The Terminator story is as formative and important in our culture -- and my pretend play -- as any I can think of. It's far from over. And before you Terminator-Owners (I have trouble remembering names) rush to cash that sweet cheque, let me give you a taste of what I could do with that franchise:

1) Terminator... of the Rings! Yeah, what if he time-travelled TOO far... back to when there was dragons and wizards? (I think it was the Dark Ages.) Hasta La Vista, Boramir! Cool, huh? "Now you gonna be Gandalf the Red!" RRRRIP! But then he totally helps, because he's a cyborg and he doesn't give a s#&% about the ring -- it has no power over him! And he can carry it AND Frodo AND Sam AND f@%& up some orcs while he's doing it. This stuff just comes to me. I mean it. (I will also offer $10,000 for the Lord of the Rings franchise).

2) More Glau. Hey. There's a reason they're called "Summer" movies.

3) Can you say... musical? Well don't. Even I know that's an awful idea.

4) Christian Bale's John Connor will get a throat lozenge. This will also help his Batwork (ten grand for that franchise too, btw.)

5) More porn. John Connor never told Kyle Reese this, but his main objective in going to the past was to get some. What if there's a lot of future-babies that have to be made? Cue wah-wah pedal guitar -- and dollar signs!

6) The movies will stop getting less cool.

Okay. There's more -- this brain don't quit! (though it has occasionally been fired) -- but I think you get my drift. I really believe the Terminator franchise has only begun to plumb the depths of questioning the human condition during awesome stunts, and I'd like to shepherd it through the next phase. The money is there, but more importantly, the heart is there. But more importantly, money. Think about it. End this bloody bidding war before it begins, and put the Terminator in the hands of someone who watched the first one more than any other movie in college, including "Song of Norway" (no current franchise offer).

Sincerely, Joss Whedon.

well i would think a big studio would have a bit more money to pay with then whedon.

i hope for WB, WB movies hasnt disappointed me in a long time

I think Whedon is being somewhat sarcastic in his offer being as he offered $10,000 for something that was bought for 25 million.

I think it's going to be either Sony or Warner Bros. that buys the Terminator rights since they've both got long standing ties to the franchise (they both distributed the last two Terminator films, Warner Bros. made the Terminator TV show, and until MGM switched to 20th Century Fox, Sony distributed the first film on DVD/blu-ray).

I don't think that Summit will obtain it and I think that they're done for once the Twilight Saga is done.

if i would get them for free i wouldnt take them.

not that i would know what to do. but let it go. its over.

i would've stopped after t2
i would stopped after the future war movie. you know the thing that every terminator fan wanted and after 2 movies still didnt get?

remember what they were promosing with TS? i still can not belive that there was only one opening scene where humans fight with the machines. and even there they dont show them.

Man i am the only one still hoping for a T5 ?
I do hate the idea of McG's T5 with John Conner going back in time and fight the machines in the present day. However i do like the prequel idea of T5 showing how the T-1000 were getting made.
Plus we need the laser rifles

I'd rather have Cameron do it or nothing, and live with the story ambiguous at the end of T2. Did the future change? Maybe. Maybe not. I'd rather live with that than count Ferris and Brancato/McGee's films as legit.

Well that pretty much rules out a possiblity for T5 :hehe:
I think all of us prefer the dark road ending instead of the happy ending Cameron had shot.

Just work out a clear script IMO. I wonder just how much Nolan changed the original script but assuming that he did a massive rewrite , just let him work on the the script this time around.

I'd rather not spend another year waiting for a movie, analysing every trailer and screenshot, devouring every article and piece of hyberbole, just to get another T3 or TS :hehe:
According to Bale Nolan only wrote for several days, his contributions were minimal. A little dialogue, and the '"I'll be back" line. McG used Nolans good rep with TDK to create hype :whatever:

Nolan rep , Bale being the most credible actor and James Cameron's blessing.....

No matter who the rights go to I do wish we get a T5 with the same cast, the cast were the best thing about Salvation so I would hope they would return for T5 with a better director.

Would love Cameron to come back but as thats doubtful I do think another director could bring something to the franchise.

Would love to see what Joss Whedon would bring to the franchise for sure.
