Oh, did he ever had them though?
Cameron sold the rights to Gale for $1 at McDonalds so he could eat, Cameron really thought Terminator would never become big. Then Gale sold the rights later on to Kassar and Vanja, they sold it, and now the new people are selling it.
But the dollar story was explained int he True Hollywood Story of Terminator, and maybe the DVD stuff as well. But that is how Cameron sold the rights to it.
How did you conceive 'The Terminator'?
When I got back from Piranha II, I knew that I was never going to get offered another movie unless I came up with something myself. I had to write a film. That made sense for me as a director. I thought it had to have effects, which justified my existence on the project, but I had to not price myself out of the kind of budget that they were likely to trust me with. I wrote the script and it was very well received. Everybody wanted to buy it from me, but nobody wanted me to direct it. They tried to split the team by offering Gale a lot of money. They said, "We'll let you produce it, but you've got to get rid of him;" But I had actually sold her the rights to the movie for $1 with the promise that she'd never cut me loose. And she kept that promise. It took two years to get it going. Meanwhile, I was preparing Terminator like it was War and Peace.

Cameron didn't sell the script to Hurd so he could eat, that's silly LOL.
Cameron wrote Terminator as a way to jump start his directorial career. He knew he had something with it and everybody wanted to buy it from him, but no one wanted him to direct it. He sold the rights to Hurd, in exchange that he would be able to direct it.
From Cameron, himself:
BenReilly is right. He had to sell the rights in order to direct the movie, so he gave it to Gale for a $1, and they worked on the movie. The rights to T2 were just snagged, Cameron remarked that otherwise he wouldn't have made it, instead relegating to a producers role, if at all. But the rights were snagged and T2 went into production with JC.
When Vajna/Kassar went bankrupt (due to decisons like Treasure Island, among others), they managed to bid to keep the Terminator rights, without telling James, who was relying on Sony to bid, but they underbid, and Cameron and Vajna/Kassar had a falling out, as they had had dinner only days previously and Cameron was not let in on the fact that they were bidding on the rights. Then, Gale Anne Hurd was forced to sell her part.
So all the rights went to Vajna/Kassar, who asked JC to make T3. However, JC was filming Titanic, and didn't want to use someone elses script ("Using someone elses script in a universe I ****ing originated held no appeal for me whatsoever") and JC decided to pass, instead concentrating on different projects. He had 'grown' past Terminator.
Then Vajna/Kassar lost the rights after T3, going bankrupt again, and Halycon received the rights. And then are now in the process of losing them.
What a drama, eh?
LOL, the food thing I just heard from Gale and I think it was jokingly. But I was right, and still am right and many are just confirming it, was that he sold the rights though for 1 dollar. The whole point is that Gale bought it for 1 dollar.
EDIT: On another note I hope some one with actual love for Terminator buys this. I would love to see a "Superman Returns" *not saying quality wise, but starting again after 2, and having some one that I dunno actually understood/watched the first two films.

If I was rich, I'd buy it.
But maybe they can hold off until I pitch the future producers of T5 my idea and get the directing gig.![]()
Win the lottery already![]()

I'm trying!
In all seriousness, you never know. I've got a short film I'm working on that's pretty kickass, so if it does the rounds in festivals, I could really get noticed. But you'll be sure I'll be seeking to pitch an idea one of these days. If they hold off that is. The good thing is, you can continue Terminator later, as the actors need to be older looking anyway if the story takes place between 2026 to 2029.
im just waiting until i can show off my TS music video i did a while ago
its pretty spoilerish
What did you think of Terminator Salvation?
It didn't quite have the emotional power that it should have had. I thought Sam was great, very powerful, and Christian... people have criticised him for being one-note but that's part of the character. He was playing a guy who's furiously dedicated to the survival of the human species. Maybe more could have been done with that. In T2 we showed the consequences. It drove Sarah insane.
Was McG the man for the job?
McG's a strong shooter and he honoured the iconic touchstones of the first two movies - almost too much. I actually felt Salvation is like Aliens, in that its a fan making a sequel to a movie they loved.
