With the announcement of an Alien prequel, I thought we could do with a thread to discuss the previous films in the franchise. What are your opinions on them, and which one is your favourite?

My favourite is Alien - A brilliant film, one of the greatest sci-fi movies ever made and it has the best creature design (I always prefered the smooth headed design). Aliens is a great sequel and a great sci-fi film, but not as good as the previous film. It is still infinitely better than the next 2 films though, as I never cared for Alien 3 and Alien Resurrection.
With Ridley Scott's involvement, I hope the prequel can bring the franchise back to it's previous greatness and redeem it after the poor third and fourth films and those abysmal Alien VS Predator films.

Love Alien and Aliens.
I consider them one of the best horror/action movies ever made, respectively.

I hate the other 2.

I love them All.

Alien 3 is an underrated film. Its easily the most emotional of the 4.

The Alien saga is one of my favourite trilogy... along with the "Die Hard" and the "Indiana Jones" trilogy:woot:

I was never completely taken with them until I purchased the quadrilogy, now I love them. Of course, when I say 'them', I mean Alien and Aliens, Alien being my favourite. Alien 3 is ok, the special edition being much better. I watched all of the special features and it just made me hate Fox more, seeing how they treated Fincher while the poor guy was trying to do his best without a set script. That's what you get when you give a release date for something that's just an idea, putting the money before the art. Tossers.

Anyway, I love love love Alien. Ridley is the man.

Yep. Alien 3 also fueled my Fox hate. Fincher did a wonderful job IMO.

He did as well as any director could with that amount of mess. Thrown in late in the game, having to have breaks to see 'what they needed' to make a full movie. Complete mess.

I agree with you on the first two, but I can't say I hate the other two. I don't like them, but I really just disregard them too much to consider my feelings as hate.

As for the prequel, I'm interested, but weary since I'm cynical when it comes to Hollywood's originality. I hope they do it justice, and that they don't turn it into style over substance.

The first three have been some of my absolute favorite movies almost as long as I can remember. My avatar/signature should attest to that. :D

I love the first two films. I rewatched Alien3 for the first time in years a few months ago after buying the quadrilogy and it was a lot better than I remembered (still not amazing, but not horrible either). Never made it farther than halfway through Alien Resurrection though.

That seems to be a common sentiment regarding Alien 3; "Better than I remembered."

Did you watch the assembly cut or theatrical?

Yeah, I've seen Resurrection twice all the way through. Once on TV and once when I finally got the Quadrilogy. That's more Resurrection than any one person should be subjected to.

Love Aliens, Alien 1 is okay, the other two are ****

Alien- The best horror movie ever. It brought in a whole new era of horror.

Aliens- My favorite of the series. It's an awesome intense movie with some kick ass action scenes.

Alien3- S***

Alien: Resurrection- Less s*** than Alien3, but still s***.

Assembly cut. That may have had a lot to do with it honestly, because before that I had only seen the theatrical cut.

I've never heard of the two different cuts. Is there a real difference between them? I've probably watched the theatrical cut. I've only sen Alien 3 a few times.

The main differences are:

In the theatrical they (1)cut a scene where they trap the alien and then the crazy guy lets it loose, (2)have the alien come out of a dog rather than the bull, (3)the chestburster at the end is present and accounted for.

I think that's right. I do get a lil mixed up though :yay:

Alien and Aliens are masterpieces. Aliens is my favorite. They didnt make any any more sequels. There never was a Alien 3 and 4.

Wow, I think I've seen the assembly cut the whole time. I've always seen the dog getting impregnated with the alien, and it bursting from the dog. Then I saw the ending to where Ripley dives into the furnace, and the alien bursts from her chest.

I'm tempted to go see the theatrical, but I don't know if it's worth it. It's funny that I've seen the assembly cut on HBO all these years. You'd think they would play the theatrical cut.

Ok so I have seen the theatrical. I guess I'll just call it the dog version. lol

I completely f***ing agree!

It's my favorite movie series as well.

I love the first 3. I love the third more than most people do but I'd put Alien at the top (actually is my favorite film) and Aliens tied with Alien 3. Most of all I prefer the tone of the first film. The claustrophobia, everyone is in panic, lack of weaponry and good supporting character development and acting. I think Fincher's idea mixed with some of Twohy's script, though having unfinished story boards, was the right way to go. People needed to get over the Newt and Hicks thing. People wanted mom, pop and daughter to be fighting aliens on Earth. Meh. That's too typical of cinema. Was Aliens great? Yes! Were some of the sequel ideas with Newt and Hicks good...no, imo.

In design: my favorite set design is the third but all are known as some of the best in Hollywood history.

Special effects: it raised the bar completely.

Directing: It has had 3 of the best directors of all time and one in Jean (though I'm not crazy about 4) is also to be remembered.

It is definitely my favorite series, too.

I was extremely put off by Newt's autopsy though.

Alien and Aliens are two of the greatest science fiction films ever made, the other 2 are just not good films.
All 4 films have had world class directors and i am a fan of all of them but it is very dissapointing watching Alien 3 and 4 after just how brilliant the first 2 are.

That was disturbing....also the quick cuts of their mutalated bodies after the crash. It was very eerie. I think the first 30 minutes of alien 3 were really good....the rest was terrible.
Alien and Aliens are the only good ones. alien 4 is an embarassment and i dont know how ANYONE can like that crap

BTW there is a huge 'alien appreciation' thread that exist already I believe
