Going to see this tonight, my excitement has down a bit with all of the negative but I am hoping I am enjoy more than the 1st movie. TASM has grown on me the last couple of years but it is just a middling CBM for me, I hope this one can go beyond that.

Even if the film as a whole doesn't work, the action is great as is the regular everyday Spidey helping citizens and catching minor crooks.

Cool, I am sure I will like it, I just wonder to what level, I love Spiderman after all. Spiderman 1 and 2 from Raimi are currently my top Spiderman movies.

I saw this on Friday, but I didn't give a full review because I didn't have much time! :oldrazz:

Here goes. What I thought about "The Amazing Spider-Man 2"

Non Spoiler review

I absolutely loved it! In my opinion, it is The Dark Knight of Spider-Man films, as in it's THE definitive Spider-Man.

The characterization, I feel, was the strongest part of the film. You can really empathize with the characters. I felt for all of them, even Aunt May! (Well, not really but you get my point :oldrazz:). You get emotionally invested for these characters and it all pays off. However none of this would be possible if it wasn't for the talented actors and their performances! :D

The best performances came from Dane DeHaan and Andrew Garfield, IMO. I don't know why but they just NAILED it! Dane was perfect, even when given lines that were sort of cheesy! ([BLACKOUT]"Welcome back for the bonus round!" seriously, he made that sound GOOD![/BLACKOUT]). As The Goblin he felt threatening, and so creepy. Andrew Garfield was much better in this, you could tell that Peter and Spidey were not the same person (personality-wise). His Peter was very different to his Spidey. Also he really gave it his all during the final act!

I also give praise to Emma Stone and Jamie Foxx, they did really well. Jamie especially for making me feel kinda sorry for him.

I enjoyed the story, it was full of interesting twists and was not afraid to be daring or even possibly controversial.

Overall I have given the film a 9.5/10, however I will change that (maybe) when I see the film a second time. :woot:

Now, Spoilers time! This is just what I liked and disliked scene and story-wise.

What I liked

- The Graduation Scene. Gwen's speech is full of foreshadowing! "We think we're immortal." "Life is precious because it ends." (paraphrasing) Stuff like that.

- Spider-Man and that little kid. When we see what Spidey does during the time jump, we find out that he talked to some kid who was getting beaten up by some bullies, and scares 'em away. He fixes his science project and walks him home. That scene made me feel warm inside! :)

- Harry's Transformation Scene. So Disturbing in a good way.

- The Spider reveal. It is revealed that the Spiders were Half Human (or had human DNA) but it was Richard Parker's DNA. The Spider venom wouldn't have worked on anybody but Peter. Harry takes it and that's what send him all Goblin. It's also hinted that Norman took it.

Some may compare it to Ang Lee's HULK, but I for one think it worked in this.

- Everything with Harry. Seriously, all of his scenes. But if I had to pick one, non-goblin scene, it would be when he is with Electro and they try to get info from Menken. His performance in that is brilliant.

- Electro beating Spidey up to the tune of "Itsy Bitsy Spider". It didn't feel out of place when you consider Max's personality in the film.

- This line. Electro: "I will be like a god!" Spidey: "Really? A god named 'Sparkles'?" :hehe:

- The final battle with Goblin.

- Gwen's death. So brutal, so sad. The SNAP is the best part. But Peter's reaction, oh my, it's so realistic. I must admit that I cried. :csad:

- Spider-Man's return. The final scene in the film. The way he talked to the kid, and what he said to RHINO, really proved that Andrew is Spider-Man.

What I kinda disliked

- Flash wasn't in it. (If he was, it wasn't for long)

- I think the Goblin fight could've been longer.

- I think Electro should have had more screen time.

- Felicity Jones as Felicia. I really have trouble with her being named that... it should've been some stock name or lesser reference.

- I think the final RHINO fight should've been longer. I would've ended the fight, had the people cheer, and then Spidey swing off for the Final Swing... but that's more of a nitpick than anything.

- Norman Osborn. Should've been in it longer. However, they did hint that he had taken the Spider Venom because he had claws like what Harry gets at the end. Also, we do see the thing his head was inside in that pic when the nurses come in, but we don't see anything after that.

That's it. :oldrazz:

Loved the bonus round line actually, made me laugh out loud

That'd be a great "T-shirt" quote in my opinion

Really glad you liked it, I noticed you said you sympathised with everyone, does that include electro?

I actually though his character was quite deep and had meaning and his actions reflected the way he thought about himself and the way he was changing, but most people disagree with that

I sympathised with Electro the most, I think. I honestly did feel sorry for him.

I loved the scene with Harry when he says he needs him and Max is all like "You..need me?" with a surprised look. Made me feel warm... even though he went on to kill people not long after. XD!

I'll try and keep my review as little to no spoilers as possible.

Besides being possibly the worst experience I've had in a cinema to date, I enjoyed this. Andrew, Emma, Dane and Sally Field were solid and as scene-stealing as ever. The action was a large improvement over the first and when the film got emotional, it does it well. I struggle to see how Peter and Gwen's relationship will be topped in any further Spidey films, let alone comic book films to be honest. There is such genuine authenticity and honesty between the two of them, which of course helps because Andrew and Emma are a real couple. Dane DeHaan is just so much damn fun to watch as Harry Osborn, seriously so much fun. Spidey is looking the best he has ever looked on film.

However, I have quite a few negatives. I'm all for having layered storylines but man was this convoluted, there was so much going on (easy to track though) that really, it was just too much. It felt like a ridiculous amount of stories were all taking place at once and it messed with the pacing of the film. Jamie Foxx was just....ehhhh, I didn't like him really at all. Another mediocre villain to add to the list with stupid motives like Connors in the previous film. Not to mention incredibly hokey and pathetic in no enjoyable way. The score was also lackluster, two lackluster scores in a row now. Sorry Hans but you let me down for the first legitimate time in quite a while.

I would discuss more positives but they would be spoileriffic and that isn't my style if I can avoid it, even if this is a spoiler filled thread.

3.5/5

 That buffled me. You gave the movie a positive score, but it was the worst experience you had in a cinema?

 That buffled me. You gave the movie a positive score, but it was the worst experience you had in a cinema?

Let me explain, it's completely unrelated to the film.

Well, the fire alarm went off with about 15 minutes left of the film. The film kept going with stupid Kanye West (cinema music) playing from the cinema. The whole ending scenes were ruined, there was no fire (Subway burnt bread), and we had to wait about half an hour for them to rewind the film. They said they'd do it once, then they didn't do it. They rewinded it eventually, but back another 30 minutes so we had to sit through so much of it again.

So not a problem with the film itself, just how it was handled by the cinema. The initial emotional impact of the ending scenes were ruined by laziness on part of the cinema. It still didn't interfere with my overall opinion of the film.

That sounds awful, lol. Sorry to hear that.

Hi guys, long time lurker, new member here. I don't imagine I'll be posting here for very often, I just wanted to share my thoughts on the movie since I see a lot of mixed reactions and I can understand why.

To give a bit of background, I like the first Raimi Spider-Man movie the best. After watching TASM2 I'd rank the movies this way: SM1 > TASM2 > SM2 =/> TASM1 >> SM3. I thought SM1 captured the spirit of what the character is about best; felt TASM1 had great ingredients but was poorly put together; used to love SM2 but find it really hard to watch now for some reason. SM3 I just didn't like.

Straight off the bat I'm giving TASM2 a 7/10. For me that's a solid fun movie, but falls short of being great like I thought SM1 was which I'd rate an 8/10.

Best thing about the movie was definitely Dane Dehaan, excellent performance and excellent character. Dane's Harry manages to exude an underlying sense of sadness and intensity while retaining a great bit of charm and likeability a. His interactions with Pete were great and show quite a bit of chemistry and it's a huge shame they didn't interact more often. I'd say the plot managed to handle his character so well that when he eventually turned into the Goblin there was a very tragic element that I felt.

Speaking of the Goblin - amazing! Absolutely loved Harry Goblin! Not only was there a tragic element, but the Goblin himself was scary and maniacal and foreboding. I got chills watching the transformation sequence. This is basically a lot of what I was hoping from and what they failed to capture with the Lizard in TASM1. Again, a damn shame his turn as the Goblin was so darn short. The fight sequence should have been longer IMO and with more dialogue. Definitely my favourite villain out of all the movies now but sadly with not enough screen time.

Electro, I'm surprised to see a lot of negativity from reading the reactions. I will agree Max Dillon pre-Electro was very cheesy, but I thought once he became Electro he was pretty cool. Jamie Foxx does a good job with what he was given, especially as Electro he's pretty menacing and intimidating. The movie does a very good job when
Electro and Harry decide to team up together, both Foxx and Dehaan played off each other very well
. I also don't understand the criticism about his motivations being paper thin, I think they provided sufficient explanation in the lead up to his Electro persona, it was satisfying IMO. I think a lot of people were maybe expecting a deep and complex character study which I am personally glad he isn't.

Then there's Aleksei Sytsevich. Giamatti was great, but for some reason the editing did very little to highlight his character. Giamatti was being amazingly OTT but I would have liked it if he was given a bit more focus during his scenes. It's hard for me to explain, but I had a hard time trying to understand what exactly he was saying, and when he's being OTT I would have liked to have seen it better.

So far this is how I'd rate the villains out of all the Spider-Man movies: Green Goblin (TASM2) >> Green Goblin (SM1) > Electro > Doc Ock > Rhino (He served his purpose well) > Lizard > Sandman> Venom.

I am going to be a black sheep and say I've never really been that invested in the Gwen/Peter dynamic. I've never really gotten the great deal of appeal that Emma Stone/Gwen Stacy has on people. Yes they have great chemistry but their dialogue have always felt rather superfluous. I can't help but cringe that they always seem to be on the verge of kissing and touching and then it wastes long seconds on their banter which could have been shorter. It's more irritating than adorable, cute or endearing to me. Nonetheless
when the moment happens when Gwen dies it was adequately heartfelt but probably not as much for those who were invested in their dynamic
.

Garfield as Peter Parker/Spider-Man was great as usual, he carries the movie very well on his shoulders. But I have to say I'm pretty miffed that the genius aspect of his character is seriously downplayed in this movie and transplanted to Gwen Stacy and she even rubs it in his face (in some sorts). I'm not happy about this whatsoever. She plays an important part in figuring something out, while some may say that helps give Gwen substance but to the detriment of a key trait of Peter Parker? One of my favourite things about Spidey are those 'Aha! Eureka!' moments he has from time to time due to his genius, and well...

Another thing that really grinded my gears was how much importance this Peter places on his parents, I've always felt that it was unquestionable that his aunt and uncle were his 'parents' no matter what, but this series overall has given me the impression that Peter has a greater regard for his real parents and that his uncle Ben and aunt May are just second rate substitutes.

My biggest gripe though, and this could really be and is most likely my own fault, is that all of the action sequences and quips were pretty much spoiled in the marketing. Almost none of it were a surprise to me when I was hoping for more. The action sequences and the wisecracks you see in the trailers and featurettes and all the clips Sony released, they're almost pretty much it. All that's missing are a few beats here and there and maybe some short sequences. Not to say that the action itself was bad, but I'm an old school Jackie Chan fan and so I love brilliant choreography, and the action in this movie is more spectacle than choreography.

The pacing of the movie was alright, I think the problem is that it lacks focus at times, there's a sequence near the end battle regarding the plane that was completely unnecessary and probably should have been cut. The villains are well balanced, with the exception of the Goblin which I believe should have had longer screen time and presence. I would 100% disagree that the movie is tonally all over the place. The tone is very consistent with what it wants to be, it's a Spider-Man movie and it captures the tone of what a Spider-Man movie should have.

Marc Webb directs well but could have done with a bit of tightening here and there and making the plot a bit more streamlined and focused. Quite often it feels like I'm watching a really long trailer (not a bad thing necessarily), there's a lot going on while still managing to hit all the right emotional notes.

Overall I liked it a lot though would probably have enjoyed it a lot more 'maybe' if I had refrained from viewing all the marketing material. The crowd loved it in the cinema I went to, I watched it in IMAX 3D, and they were all laughing at the quips and comedic scenes as well as ooh'ing and aah'ing at the right moments.

Oh it was, hence why it's possibly the worst crap I've had to deal with in a cinema. On the plus side, at least I got to finish the film, even if it was tarnished a bit. But still was just glad to see it all the way through.

That's messed up CapedCrusader, absolutely sucks as the ending was the best part of the movie and you won't be able to get that first viewing back :(

On your point about marketing Point07, my mother had seen NO trailers for TASM2, so she went in completely spoiler free and did not see.
Gwen's death coming at all! She loved the action sequences and said spiderman was like the spiderman she grew up with in the comics.

I have to say, this movie really effected me, still got a weird melencholy feeling deep down when I think about, 3 days after seeing it for the first time.

I think it's a truely beautiful film, and after having time to mull it over, I think it is better than SM2

Great review and thoughts on the film Stunt07. Quite a intense view on what the film ment to you on the whole. I have to say you views on the Gwen/Peter relationship was quite a surprise but the points you listed were fair and understandable. Good job.

I'd much rather listen to Kanye West than the typical Imagine Dragons/Contemporary Country Hits that they play at my theatre, at least all of his songs don't blend together lol what songs did they play?

Haha, they play so much random songs. There was a generic rock song playing when:

Gwen was falling to her death and Peter "caught" her with his web

All I know is that all the music just ruined the emotion during the scenes. Thank god I got to watch it properly and let it impact me. I just remembered I recorded about 30 seconds of it as a laugh while Kanye West played over it, not to mention all the cinema lights were on.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2’s main strength lies in the title character and his doomed love. The web slinger is on full show here, and it’s probably the best he’s been captured on screen. He’s fast, funny and most importantly a hero. He’s seen saving various people on the streets from all sorts of scenarios, all except the one closest to him. Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone (Peter Parker and Gwen Stacy respectively) are electric together.

They share plenty of valuable screen time that builds towards a melancholy and uplifting finale which nails the character’s core and why we love him. It’s the central story of Peter and Gwen which delivers the goods. It’s very natural. There’s plenty of humour and charm. I value this in Spider-Man films. This one has a lighter, breezier feel and does feel like a comic book come to life. The opening truck chase grabbed me from the get go. There’s not a standout action scene from my point of view, but I generally liked their approach. They managed to incorporate Spidey’s webbing throughout, which I liked.

Hans Zimmer’s score suits the film, and I know pretty much all the tracks off by heart having listened to it repeatedly for the last week. It’s a great job, reflecting Peter’s youthful energy in the action sequences as well as nailing the tender, quieter moments between Peter and Gwen, as well as Aunt May. This movie made me proud to be a fan of this character. It’s my second favourite Spider-Man film. It’s a step up from Webb’s first outing, and makes that film better as well by association. It takes the themes of that film and brings them to a conclusion. I think they improved a host of things, and the added daytime scenes I appreciated as well.

I felt the villains intertwined together just fine. I’d call Harry the driving point in this regard, seeking out Electro and playing into Max’s need of adoration and purpose. Of these plots, the blood Harry needs playing into the secret video Richard Parker recorded is my pick. It showed Peter’s heroism and care for a friend who became increasingly desperate. And the fact they hadn’t been in contact for about a decade made his quickness to anger more understandable.

Simply - I had such a fun time with TASM2 and feel like I’ll always come into bat for it. Heart, soul and humour. Well done, Spidey.

I remember as a kid, my mom took me and my brother to Shrek for like the 400th time, 15 minutes in the fire alarm went off and we had to leave. The theater had a problem. It gave everyone free movie tickets who were watching the film and we had to go home.

The end.
