It makes Tobey Maguire's Spidey look like a humourless mute.

By miles and miles and miles. My audience (including myself) were cracking up at the quips. I really hope no one posts them on here as you need to hear them for yourself. They are freaking hilarious. 5 movies and for the very first time Spider-Man is actually funny.

With older films I tend to agree with critics, but with newer movies I like audience ratings more. IDK why lol

Agreed. Not that it influences my opinion at all, but I think the overall audience reaction will be positive. I was surprised as to how much I loved the movie because I was down on all the negative reviews before going in.

Just back from seeing it in IMAX.

Freaking loved it.
My one take away from the movie is they totally NAIL Spider-Man. 5 Spidey movies and this is the first time he 'feels' like Spidey and the quips absolutely cracked me up something no Spidey movie has managed in the past.

The action is incredible.
The 3D is mind blowing.
The performances were moving.

Unfortunately there is a lot of stuff I don't like but the stuff I like I absolutely loved.

I enjoyed this more than I enjoyed Winter Solder, and will watch this movie within an inch of its life on Blu Ray.
I suspect a lot of people are going to dislike this movie but personally speaking I loved it.

Yeah, I remember seeing you post that. In all honesty, I am feeling a bit of the same--negative reviews/feedback can really take a toll on your mental process. I'm not worried though...I usually am able to block out all the noise once I start watching the film. I know I'm in the vast minority but I prefer TASM1 to Avengers or TWS (both are very impressive films) because I personally am more emotionally invested in Garfield's Peter Parker and Spider-Man than I am in the superheroes in Avengers, Agent Coulson, or Captain America. Maybe a part of that is that Spidey is my favorite superhero, but another part of it is how genuinely Garfield embodies the character and how raw he emotes in the role, his performance just strikes a chord with me. Great to know that TASM2 can establish that investment into the characters on its own, apart from TASM1.

imageAs a UK resident I have been able to see Amazing Spider-Man 2 a few days early and wanted to share a few thoughts with you. I will keep spoilers to a bare minimum as I don’t wish to ruin the experience for anyone. If you read no further, my parting words would be I enjoyed this movie, and encourage you to see it.

After the jump I will highlight (with only minor spoilers) why. Continue at your own risk, if like me you have already seen it please don’t mention any specific spoilers in the comments.

1. Andrew Garfield. Andrew Garfield’s performance was one of the few things from the first Amazing Spider-Man I really enjoyed. I felt he was the right actor in the wrong movie. I’m glad to say this movie is better suited to his Spider-Man and Peter Parker. Garfield delivers a Peter Parker who is funny, well meaning and emotional. I have read reviews that criticised the film’s “emo” scenes, I would argue that the few “emo” scenes there are, are relevant to the plot and true to the character of Peter Parker. Last week I saw Captain America 2, and Steve Rogers is stoic, Peter is emotional. To shy away from that wouldn’t be true to the character. I also enjoyed that the film committed some time to Peter as a scientist. Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man was “brilliant, but lazy” and as a result we never really saw him experiment, so was glad to see this Peter practically apply his knowledge. However this is a duel role, and Garfield also delivers the most wise-ass Spider-Man I have ever seen. Not all the jokes are side splitting funny, but they are perfect Spider-Man jokes.

2. Uncle Ben. I think it’s safe to say the previous four Spider-Man movies have mined this concept for all it’s worth. I was convinced that well was dry. The idea of Uncle Ben has been well played out and it was refreshing that it took a back seat in this picture. Ben is referred to sparingly, and when he is referenced it is poignant, and not just to remind Peter about responsibility. Ben’s role in the movie carried a different message to what we normally see and it was very welcome.

3. CGI Spider-Man. Regardless of what you may feel about the plot of the film I would defy any Spider-Man fan to not get a kick out of the web swinging scenes. This is the best Spider-Man has ever looked on film and the scenes where he swings though the city look amazing (dammit). Not only that but I particularly enjoyed how spider senses were depicted, as I don’t think this was really achieved in the previous film. I think if you compare this to the first Spider-Man movie we can agree that the CGI has come along way, and it’s great that we live in a time where Spider-Man’s very unique style can be present so well on film. You will believe a man can web-sling.The fight scenes with both Electro and Green Goblin are well structured and dynamic using full advantage of the power sets involved.

4. The worst marketing campaign ever. I honestly think that if you are going into this hoping to see an epic Electro vs. Spider-Man story you will be disappointed. Don’t get me wrong Jamie Fox delivers on the what the script gave him, and Max Dillion is certainly a more developed character than say the Red Skull in the first Captain America movie, but Amazing Spider-Man 2 is not about Spider-Man vs Electro. It is about Peter Parker. The film explores his relationships with all his parents, his friends and Gwen, and how his decisions effect those around him. I appreciate that would make for a very boring poster, but it would be more honest. I did however enjoy Electro, the Green Goblin and Rhino. This was probably the most successful attempt at multiple villains since the Dark Knight. It’s probably second only to Dark Knight in this regard. The Rhino especially was very well handled, and may be my favourite use of a Spider-Man villain in a cinematic universe. I would describe Captain America 2 as a finite graphic novel, where the plot takes place over a few days, and is solely about the mission. Amazing Spider-Man 2 is more like a years worth of comics, where the story covers a year in the hero’s life and is about more than just the villain of the movie. There are tangents, but only one that left me scratching my head.

5. Cameos. There are a number of cameos in the movie, and for the most part I would take them all with a pinch of salt.

Some, like Jonah I found very clever, others like “Felicia” or Smythe I found to be largely pointless.

If you are looking for a film about Peter, Gwen, Harry or Max, I think you will enjoy this. If you are hoping for a detailed exploration of Norman you may feel let down.[/SPOILER] I think there are a number of things that will frustrate those looking for a faithful Lee/Ditko Spider-Man story, however I also think they adapt a number of things with a high level of fidelity.

Grade: A-

For the most part I found this a gripping cinema experience. There was a moment I realised I hadn’t seen Spider-Man in a while, but didn’t care because Garfield, Stone and Dehaan where more than entertaining. There where however one or two things, mostly concerning Peter’s father I found unwelcome. It’s a subplot that was cut from the first film, and had it be cut here it’s likely I would have scored the film even higher. I probably need longer to reflect, but at the moment this is my second favourite Spider-Man movie.

The mid-credit scene is pointless, don’t stick around.

Great review, Adam. I wholeheartedly agree. They’ve taken some liberties but picked up incredible amounts of stuff from the comics. I like how they are expanding the storyline of Peter’s parents. It fits. And May’s comments about Ben near the end – good stuff.

As for the marketing campaign. Gee, they called the movie “Rise of Electro” here in Germany. Electro is great, but this is Peter’s (and Gwen’s!) movie. The trailers tell completely different stories …


Saw it today, liked most of it. The overall tone of the film reminds me a lot of Bendis early work on USM and the focus on Peter and Gwen’s relationship reminded me a bit of Spider-Man:Blue. The action sequences are really brilliant and much more enjoyable than they were in the previous film. The Spider-Man costume is by far the best looking and most accurate adaptation of the suit to date and the way they capture his movement around NY is (excuse the pun) amazing. I was surprised at how tastefully the Rhino was used.

My only real complaint is that it feels like they are trying to shoehorn too much stuff into these movies. Felicia and Smythe’s cameos felt very unnecessary and the Venom symbiote has been introduced far to early for my liking. The plotline with Peters dad still doesn’t interest me at all and seems like kind of a waste, especially because more interesting scenes from the trailer appeared to be missing from the movie.
The central plot of the movie would have been much more enjoyable just focusing on Peter and Gwen, with Electro as the central villain for Spidey to fight and Harry being introduced in his civilian identity only. Goblin vs. Spidey was enjoyable, but I would have liked for the Goblin portion of the climax to have happened in ASM3 just because it feels too soon for these events to transpire in this very new franchise.
Another minor gripe is that I watched the first ASM last night to prepare and the films feel somewhat tonally inconsistent with each other. Similar to the what Adam said in the review about Cap 2, ASM1 feels like a self-contained graphic novel, whereas ASM2 feels like a event storyline. It’s quite a large contrast but not one that spoiled my enjoyment of the film.

Saw the movie wends night… I really enjoyed the length of time the movie seems to cover… I liked bendis ultimate spider-man because of it’s exploration Into the character of Peter Parker. So to me the movie was probably my fav spider-man film. But will need to watch it again before I can give it that much credit. It’s actually really weird how many scenes from the trailer are not in the actual movie. A lot of dialogue with Harry, Norman, aunt May. I wonder if they just shot it for the trailer or later decided to remove it. Or maybe Germany just gets a shorter version of the movie?!

Three people on the website itself and a few others on the forums gave it positive to mixed reviews for the most part. what do some of you guys think(Peter portrayed as a scientist for example)?

Off to see TASM2 for the second time today! Let's see if any of my opinons from yesterday (below) change!!

OK so I just saw the film. I absolutely loved TASM and this just solidified it for me.

Let's clarify a few things, most people see me to have a low standard for films, I thought Iron Man 2 and Thor: The Dark Worlds were good films, I found the laundry sherriff line funny and I have been a huge spidey fan for a long time. In short, I'm incredibly biased and tend to be very easy on films. I'm all about how it affects me emotionally, and the little quips that make things awkward dissapear if the film can get to me on an emotional level.

Anyway I'll spoiler my little "review" for you all. This is an analysis of characters as well so please don't read this if you have not seen the movie.

In short for those who don't want to be spoiled, best film I've seen all year with powerful underlying themes of identity and independence. It contained the most emotional scene that I've ever seen in a comic book movie, and one of my top ten in any movie I've ever watched. It was the first scene to actually make me cry in years, especially in public. I wasn't the only one in the theatre either.

9/10 for me. Would have been perfect if they took a little slower, [BLACKOUT]DIDN'T EMPHASISE THE WORD TIME SO MUCH[/BLACKOUT] and didn't use the "it's complicated" line. It bothered me.

I'm just going to give my two cents on particular moments and themes of the film below, I'll put it in a spoiler box because it's long and probably not interesting to a lot of you.

I am shocked with the bad reviews, yes, the story did move a bit fast, but I didn't find electro to be too aweful at all, he had something he loved, a light in the darkness, he manufactured his own hope and it was torn to pieces. His view of Spiderman was that of someone who was his best friend, he imagined himself as spiderman's biggest fan. It was his own way to cry out for help. I thought the Max and Gwen scene was really nice! In fact, now that I think about it, this same underlying theme is present in Harry, but in manifests itself in a different way. Harry's hope of survival is Spiderman's blood, in the search to save his life, he does irreparable damage to himself. He literally says "Harry is dead". He again felt betrayed by Peter in his last moments of sanity. It really was heartwrenching to me. That's how I interpreted it anyway.

I did love the opening scene, it showed how courageous Richard Parker was, fighting for what was right until the very end.

Peter and Gwen together were amazing. All their scenes left me in awe, I loved the scene where they see each other for the first time after 5 months apart. I loved their little "ground rules", I loved the bridge scene, I loved how she stressed it was "her choice" to be where she was. I thought it was the best portrayal of a relationship in a comic book movie, heck, it would stand up to some of the better romance films up there.

The going to England thing was heartwrenching, gave them a future, then ripped it away. The clocktower scene was absolutely phenomenal, I think I have already said it, but it is the first time I cried in a film in years. Absolutely beautiful and heartwrenching.

Some negative scenes? Probably the whole "It's complicated" stuff from Harry and Peter, please guys, if I can see something coming, it is far past cliche' and borderline repetitive. I liked the time metaphor, but honestly, if they were more subtle with it it would have been much better.

Loved the themes with the villians, Time theme was too hardly pushed. Richard Parker actually emphasises the word "time", it felt like the writers were saying, "Come on idiots! TIME! Cause clocks! And gears! And the time stopped when the web snapped and killed Gwen! Time Guys! Deep and meaningful! Watch! Time!" I think less telegraphing of Gwen's death would have made it far better too, and Gwen's speech was possibly a little TOO related to the whole "I'm a goner" aspect of the film.

My favourite parts of the film? The clocktower scene, that scene alone is a 10/10, sheer perfection. The montage of Gwen and Peter's moments together during her speech from the laptop, during the pain of trying to let Gwen go. Oh it hit my right in the heart. Starting to well up a bit just thinking about it! I loved the seasons going past with Andrew Standing by Gwen's grave, and the funeral scene hit hard.

I can see why people did not like the way it was structured, it was like one of those videos that make you hallucinate, lots of flashes and crazy, differentiating colours. But I think when you take time to process it, and look deeper into the colours and ebbs and flows of the film, it is something truely special.

I will be seeing it again for sure, probably tomorrow.

Loved it. Great balance or emotion, story telling and action.
Loved the new take on Goblin and Electro. Garfield really brought back the quippy wise cracking spiderman we all love.
If you liked the first ASM you'll love this. If you hated the first ASM, you might atleast enjoy this one more.

Really excited for the future of Sony's ASM universe. Hope to see Black Cat, Silver Sable etc amonsgt all the Sinister 6 villains they teased.

One other thing, if you are going to see this movie, see it in 3D. The 3D in WS was an absolute disgrace total cash grab waste of money (the 3D not the movie) but the 3D in ASM2 absolutely POPS when spidey is swinging (which is a lot) and when you see Electro. See it on the biggest screen you can and see it 3D, the 3D is amazing.

One other thing, there is no post credits scene, don't bother waiting around.
Of course you wont believe me and sit through 5 minutes worth of credits anyway, but trust me on this.

I haven't been this excited since The Avengers, I believe people will see how big of an event Spider-Man is becoming once again at the movie theaters soon enough. How was the crowd reactions on your screening? Was it packed? Are you on UK? I have heard from a whole lot of sell outs on the BO boards.

Hi guys, saw it last night and despite the mixed reviews I have to say I really enjoyed it.

Yes it has some flaws and that prevents it from being a 9/10 movie but it has some big positives too, particularly the relationship between Gwen and Peter and the action scenes. The way Spidey fights is so good!

The film really sets up a big storyline for the future and there are some fantastic scenes throughout.

Personally I think most fans will thoroughly enjoy the film despite its flaws, I know I did.

Oh and they totally nailed Spider-Man. The way he moves and his personality are just awesome!

Haven't posted on the Spidey boards for 2 years because I was scared of spoilers t:

I am indeed in good old blighty. The IMAX showing was packed, the movie got applause at the end, something that didn't happen at WS I might add, but that may be because Spidey fans are more bold

I personally loved it but I can't say for sure you will but I can say for sure you will love Spider-Man himself because that is Spidey from the comics put on the big screen and you will crack up because he is hilarious. If nothing else this movie gets SPIDEY 'right'.

Im going to talk less about what i loved and more about what i didn't.

-The ending. I loved it, but didn't. Everything up to him watching the speech was excellent. It should have ended for him there and then actually end with the whole 'sinister six' shot. Boom, credits. The third film could have been about him coming back as spidey and having to deal with the blame he feels over gwens death. I get that months had passed, but i would really love the whole spidey no more done in this way.

- the score. I loved it in parts, but not all. Wasn't awful, but i feel Horners hero theme was stronger. But the dramatic music was as good, or better, than the previous. But the hero theme just wasn't as good. And i thought the music in parts was inappropriate. Mainly the scene with peter trying to research things about his parents.

What else? Need to watch it again. But i still loved the film.

I cant say i loved it far more than TASM. But overall, it was still what a sequel should be. A step up from the first.

All the batman and robin/green lantern comparisons... I just don't get it.
