The Appeal of Gambit

The moment I started liking Gambit was indeed a shallow one. I was just starting to get into liking comics, and I was very young. I saw a Marvel trading card with him on it and I thought, WOW he looks really cool.
(This was also back during a time when I would just buy whatever comics I found at Vons and places like that.)

The reason I liked him on the cartoon was because he was an anti hero. He was sort of like Wolverine, only extremely layed back. He was also friendly, and then there was the relationship with him and Rogue where he loved her but could never touch her. And the backstory about him sort of coming from Theives Guild, and then later him having a connection to the Morlock massacre and Sinister was cool too.
(I always thought he should have been the 3rd Summers Brother. Possibly raised by Mr. Sinister.)
Another possible reason I used to realy like him might have been because Wolverine, on the show, was too gruff and angry all the time. (it wasn't until later that I started to look closer and undertand Wolverine better) Scott was too stiff all the time. (but I still liked him more than Wolverine) Beast was not on the show all the time. That could be another reason.

And it was the 90s, a pretty art driven time in comics.

If he was turned back into who he was during the 90s, take away all the recent stuff about Apocalypse and make him a simple character with the same backstory and all, would you work today?

No, we're calling him a little gay. Straight, but gay tendencies are present. Like the stripe down his pants. What a wonderful fashion choice.

It's a Corellian BloodStripe.

It's a mark of honor amongst the Corellian people (Han Solo's people)

Like the Distinguished Service Cross or the Medal of Honor.

No one else on the planet wears the Blood Stripe other than recipients. It is detachable, so he moves it from one pair of pants to another.

He received it for saving a whole load of Corellian refugee children from slavers right before he blew up the slaver's spicing operations.
Coincidentally, he was forced to drop the load of spice he was carrying at the same time in order to bring the kids back (trouble with the police and all that jazz) That load belonged to Jabba.
So he received an award and had a bounty placed on his head for the same action. What a bummer huh?

And as for Gay tendencies, I agree that Gambit and Jack Sparrow are more than a little gay. But Han? Han is straight. And no wishful imagining by homosexual fan boys will make it different.

Please, don't throw that expanded universe garbage in here.

It's canon man. Deny it all you want, Lucas and Lucasfilm have ranked that stuff as true unless he wants to contradict it.
And I think more than a few fanboys would argue with you and your "garbage" statement.

That being said, for Darthphere's sake, no more expanded universe info in here.
*bows out *

edit: Darth, I would think you of all people would enjoy that stuff, you seem to like Star Wars quite a bit. Why such animosity?

I enjoy the EU a lot, but I see it as a completely different entity from the movies.

I truly love the character of Gambit, he has just been on of my favorite X-Men forever.

My Gambit tattoo has been happy today.

I can see that. Understandable I suppose, plus it would help keep me from getting mad when the prequels (I and II) stink big time.

Not a bad idea actually.

Those things don't wash out!

Very true, they don't. If I wasn't happy with it I would be upset.

I dont read much X-Men, but can someone give their opinion on why people like/want Gambit so much? I've been on the fence about him. I find his powers to be interesting, and worth seeing more and more and worth reading about. But the character himself, I dont find interesting, and I have a hard time finding why others find him so interesting. Can someone explain a little bit why they like him, and maybe recommend some readings?

He's the anti-Wolverine, sort of. They're both mysterious, they're both bad boys, but while Wolverine is the frustrated, short, not very good looking guy who cant get the girl he wants due to her being taken (at least this is how he started, he's definitely changed over the years), Gambit is the tall, suave, good looking ladies man.

Wolverine is a reflection of most hardcore comic fans, while Gambit is what most hardcore comic fans would like to be.

Nor does he smell like Old Spice and Swamp Water. Which is always a plus.

I hate Jack Sparrow too, and can't figure out why people like him, but I suppose they like him for the same reason they like Gambit. Foolishness.

As for Storm, I like her cuz she's a goddess but not... kinda like Batman is a superhero, but not. And cuz she reminds me of my mom on some crazy level.

Your Moms like Storm? Awesome :woot:

Heh, I wanna do your mom.

I'm glad I read through the responses. I never understood the Gambit love either. He's cool enough, but I couldn't figure out the over-the-top love. Not sure I still understand it, but ...

Have to agree with Willy C here... have no idea what his fascinating factor was. to me he didn't really look overly cool.. yeah he wears a trench but does that ipso facto make you cool? I always considered him the "directionless" character in the Xmen world. You knw, the writers came up with this really cool concept but never thought out how he was going to tie into anything and then let out a huge sigh of relief when everyone just accepted that he had this mystery about him and didn't ever seem to care that it got revealed.

You know, like the Xfiles was...it could end but as long as people are buying it let's just ride the wave....and then it got tired and canceled... hehehe

Gambit's a cool character, and he's had plenty of cool moments, but he's not that deep. And writers haven't really done cool things with him since the 90s. I have a lot of attachment to Gambit because he was my favorite when I was a kid, but I don't know if he's actually one of my favorites now.
