Surprised that there wasn't already a thread about this movie which came out today, so I thought I'd create it.
Just saw it tonight, thought it was pretty good overall, maybe 8/10.
Saw it in a mostly packed theater, which is the way to see this movie! Although, I was surprised at how little audience reaction most of the "jokes" got. Could've just been my theater though, because it seemed about only half the theater laughed at the jokes, while the other half just wasn't into it as much.
Any fans of dark/black comedies in general will likely eat this up—the movie definitely knew what it was and played up to that. And as far as dark comedies go, it was an absolute riot—I particularly liked how "dark" it got, yet constantly balanced it throughout with an almost-meta, irreverant edge. And yup, the movie definitely took advantage of the R rating too, although maybe not quite as much as it could have.
Jesse Eisenberg was actually pretty great in the movie and played to his obvious physical strengths—or more specifically, the lack thereof.
The guy who played the sensei, Alessandro Nivola, was good too. Hadn't heard of him before. Imogen Poots didn't really have much to do in a minor supporting role, but did ok with the material given. If nothing else, the movie certainly sold me on her as a candidate for Catwoman in Matt Reeves' Batman!
Solid flick, very entertaining all the way up to the end!
