Anyway,

I think its a good illustration of how people will hold onto religion and all the claims that come with it, even when the expectations don't meet with reality. It's the complete opposite of science, in which ideas are abandoned when they don't pan out.

Religion allows people to ignore reality.

Edit: Just read the article. He's doing neither and said he'll just lay there and die if he gets bit. What an idiot. I'm pretty sure it's known as suicide if you plan to handle poisonous animals with neither protection nor any intention to try to get help if/when they bite you.

I guess that's what happens when people make such a massive virtue out of faith. People can justify absolutely anything - even dying from the exact thing you said your faith would protect you from dying from - dying for no reason whatsoever, that can be turned into a virtue. Stupid.

Cause it's a matter of proving that their faith is the right one by trying to kill themselves and if it doesn't happen then that means their way of thinking is correct and anything you say against it is wrong.

Snakes are a representation of the devil. Their handeling and triumph over the snakes is a representation of god's triumph over the devil. Its kind of like their version of the Eucharist.

The stupidity definitely burns.

His death should tell them that god didnt agree with him or had a reason for not giving him power over the snake. His congregation wont see it that way tho or they will just trust god and not examine it further.

The type of people that are a part this nonsense arent the smartest bunch. I can understand most christian denominations, but snake handling is just stupid. I would go so far as to call it pagan and heretical. And this is coming from a serious heretic.

The OT god is definitly a wraging dick.

Back in 100-200AD when the church was still figuring out just what the hell it was about there were some groups that considered the OT god a seperate entity from God the Father and Jesus. They called the OT god the Creator. An imperfect lesser being which was capable of mood swings. Their argument was "how could an all powerful all knwlowing always right being have moods? Moods imply a change and why would a being like god get emotional and change?"
