This intensely emotion and unnerving little film really took me by surprise, quickly becoming one my favorite horror movies (hell, maybe one of my favorite movies, period) of all time. I'm not quick to use the word "masterpiece", but if it doesn't apply here, then I don't know what does.
Simply taken as a horror piece, it excels in delivering on the tension and dread. This is no schlocky jump-scare fest, though there are a couple of those thrown in for good measure. The most horrifying things are left unseen, allowing your imagination to run wild. The movie never stops ramping up, climaxing in a way I've always wanted to see a horror movie do so, and culminating in a truly unique ending with plenty of unanswered questions.
But wait. There is a whole other movie in here. A movie underneath the horror. A movie about mental illness and the unpleasant truths that come with it. To watch this film as a metaphor is an even more terrifying experience.
What do you guys think about The Babadook?
