The Batman General News & Discussion Thread - Part 2

Terrible news...

Just this very afternoon, we talked about Tim Sale's work for a good hour with a friend...
I've loved his style since the moment I discovered it. I distinctly remember buying his art book when starting comic book school, back in 2009/2010. That one is still right there, on the shelves next to me. And I still regularly take a look at his work. Incredible designs, a very singular line work, perfect use of shadows... A true master.
Also, to my eyes, definitely one of the most iconic modern Batman artists. His Two-Face is one of the greatest !

RIP Tim Sale, and thanks for the inspiration.

My biggest question with the sequel is, how will the story challenge Bruce/Batman now that he's arrived at a place of understanding his role in Gotham and being a symbol of hope? What's the best way to test that? Without repeating TDK of course. I think starting there is how to start figuring out the place the story needs to go, rather than just trying to *insert villain here*.

I think you can challenge the Bruce Wayne identity. Where this film was very Batman centered and about Bruce being the disguise, it could be the other way around or it's about being both. Bruce didn't like being in the limelight in this movie, now's the time to exploit that.

It's why I do think the Court of Owls would be great villains for the follow up. The members reach out to Bruce to exploit the Wayne resources and Bruce joins them to get on the inside where it's harder for Batman to go. It'd be cool to see Bruce framed for a crime too that where he needs to use both Bruce and Batman to get himself out of and try not to be discovered as Batman.

I really don’t like the idea of Batman not being older and experienced when he figures out there’s a secret society running the show. The reason why that story works is because Batman is so experienced that he feels he knows every corner of the city like the back of his hand. Everything runs like clockwork. He’s met every classic rogue 10 times over. He’s a well oiled machine and then there’s this big revelation. You wouldn’t be doing the story justice if you rush that for a year 3 Batman. Not to mention it doesn’t mesh with the early years power grab they’re setting up or the fact that we just got a full conspiracy plot with the history of the Wayne’s/Gotham “it’s not what it seems”.

A huge pass on the Court of Owls in this trilogy. Maybe if they return for a fourth many years later.

My thoughts exactly.

Watching some of the making of bts. Reeves keeps mentioning Frank Miller.

I don’t remember if it was Reeves or one of the other producers, but they attributed the art on Year One to Miller and I was ready to throw hands.

Frank is just the go to guy for these directors. You can go down the list and his name pops up. No matter how much some comic fans complain about this, he is the go to guy for these hollywood directors. I still got some pages of that Aronofsky version somewhere.

The Frank Miller Year One script is available to anyone with google

I woulda loved that film, think I'd love it more now than then because I doubt it would have done well, I like when Story tellers kinda keep a similar destination but wind the roads along the way. It keeps it interesting I feel

Well it's hard not to reference Frank Miller when you're trying to make a Batman movie especially early days Batman.

Obviously I get why Miller factors in, but they were talking about taking inspiration from specific panels on Year One, and he wasn’t even the artist on that story.

Reeves has given credit to Mazzucchelli several times in interviews.

I've always held the opinion that the trilogy is gonna be about Bruce refining the key aspects required to turn him into Prime Batman. The Batman has instilled the need for a symbol of hope for the people of Gotham. Next, just move onto a new aspect of himself. The reason why I want Freeze is because of how that type of story challenges Bruce's compassion above all else. Bruce knows he needs to give the people something to believe in, but by all accounts he still has a fairly damning opinion of people who have already "crossed that line", as it were. Prime Batman (in my opinion) is the exact opposite. He always holds the belief that people can be better, it's why he doesn't kill. Freeze would be the perfect story to develop this Bruce into having that aspect.

Also I get not liking Frank Miller, he's done more stinkers than good stuff at this point but

That doesn't change him making the definitive Batman origin story. Taking inspiration from it with a story similarly tied to his early years is inevitable.

I hope the sequel isn't 3 hours long. Even though I feel like this movie justified most of the runtime, some of it felt like it could've been trimmed.

I'm actually fully expecting a shorter run time for the sequel. Reeves got a sweet deal for the first film but WB is under new management now.
