The Batman General News & Discussion Thread - Part 2

Except in the case of a big, sprawling story like this. Genuinely not coming at this from a fanboy place: with my objective critical hat on the movies biggest struggle is trying to fit everything into a three hour window. Cutting anything else would actively hurt it.

Doesn't mean the sequel can't be, and maybe should be, more concise and streamlined! But The Batman itself is three hours long for a reason.

I wouldn't call The Batman's story 'sprawling'.

It's a noir-detective style drama with a serial killer, and a corrupt system underneath. It's a pretty basic story.

Corrupt system, a serial killer, and a vengeful lead is trope-y at this point and pretty street-level, low scale from a story perspective.

Joaquin Phoenix? In his dumb little belly shirt with his stupid hair? Masterpiece.

I know! I really kind of saw how great an actor he was beginning in that film because when you see him you kind of roll your eyes but then he is the emotional center of the film! The man may be weird but he is something special!

That's the plot, not the story. Two very different things.

I’d say everything that has been revealed today, at least in terms of protecting what Reeves is trying to do in his own little corner….. this is pretty best case scenario.

James Gunn is an ally, folks.

But he is obviously lying as is Matt Reeves because...reasons!! ;)

Greatest line ever.

I don't mind if a Batman movie is 3 hours. A good movie is a good movie, I just feel like elements of the second half of The Batman felt like it was there just to expand the run time. A 20 minute trimming would have been perfect. Again, that's a nitpick though.

Maybe its just me but the stuff people always think should be cut is the stuff that actually matters the most. The Wayne family/Falcone stuff, the online radicalization stuff with Riddler - that's all way more interesting to me than the serial killer hunting plot which, imo, is just a vehicle to get us to the meat of the story.

Cut this, yes.

Because the film does nothing with it. It introduces it and wraps it up so fast with no clear long term change to the protagonist.

The film needed to do something more meaningful with it and it's clear it didn't have the time to, so it should've been left for a sequel.

Bruce could've had an emotional talk with Alfred based on the fear of losing him, alone.

Yeah, but to me that is the actual story of the movie. It's the heart of it and the fact that it doesn't get the time to breathe it deserves is by far the biggest flaw.

Which is why it should've been left for a second film. It could've been an entire arc, for Bruce. It'd be great.

I actually hope it gets revived later.

I’m glad this series will remain separate from the mainstream Dc film series. It just won’t work if this Batman who’s grounded in reality suddenly is thrusted into a world full of metahumans, gods, aliens and monsters. That being said I hope they push the envelope with the reincarnation of Batman various rogue gallery of villains in the subsequent sequels.

“The history of DC…it was f word up," Gunn said, calling out the Arrowverse, Whedon vs. Snyder JL, The Batman, The Suicide Squad. “No one was minding the mint. They were just giving away IP like they were party favors to any creators that smiled at them.”

Gunn is speaking facts lol

I literally said an indulgent 15-20 page paper that bores.

You say that's 'better'?

C'mon.

If that paper has the needed info...yes.

Unless there is hard and fast rules on how long it should be brevity is almost never your friend nor is being "entertaining ". Teachers see that as cop outs and tap dancing cause you don't have the actual information.

Never wasn't baby.

Supergirl and Mister Miracle are pretty great. But I also liked Heroes in Crisis, so.

I've only read his Batman stuff which...

yeesh.

His actual stories aren't that bad in the bullet points but good Lord his dialogue and character writing makes me wanna rip my eyeballs out of their sockets

Must really be a Batman thing cause the character work and dialogue of both Miracle and Supergirl are quite good and probably their best aspects outside of the artwork imo

With all that said, Gunn was also quick to clarify that their aim is to strike a balance and not overload the audience with just Batman and overexpose the hero, "The Brave and The Bold is not going to be coming out in the same six-month period, as The Batman." The pair also said that The Batman — Part II could be in prep sometime in 2023. The Brave and the Bold is going to be the DCU Batman movie that Gunn and Safran bring to the screen and it will introduce its Batman and Robin in an unusual father-son story inspired by Grant Morrison’s comic series.
