Ugh, Time Square is such a pain in the ass. Not worth going there. Convince her of that. Tell her it's just a lot of meaningless lights. Definately spend the day in either SoHo or Chinatown. She should trust you on that one.

I'd actually rather NOT visit the stereotypical tourist spots, so I won't mind if we don't visit Time Square. Tourist-y spots tend to be about the same in every city; I want to go somewhere fun and interesting.

Times Square is touristy as hell and there's really not THAT much to see or do there, to be honest. It's A LOT of people wandering around, gawking, and bumping into each other while they look at Naked Cowboy Guy and avoid the panhandlers and three-card monte A-Holes. There are many other things that are worth spending your time doing like if you want to see some of the historic landmarks or spend some time in the Village or something.

Time Square sounds like the monuments in DC, which I always avoid. Thanks for the advice :)

That's refreshing to read. Too often I've had people ask me about Times Square only to hear me tear it down to their disappointment.

It's WORSE than the monuments in DC, believe me. I hate Times Square. Go to China Town and find one of the little bubble tea places. Those are fun and they have some crazy but tasty drinks. If you're into blues at all, Terra Blues in the Village is an excellent blues club. Right across the street from it is a fantastic Spanish restaurant that I can never remember the name of. Another good place to eat is Eight Mile Creek (if it's still there, anyway). Austrailan food run by a bunch of crazy Australians. They have kangaroo if you're curious to try it, and if you go on a Sunday evening to their downstairs bar there will be a bunch of insane Australian guys down there hanging out, drinking beer and playing Australian rock and roll. Ask them to play some Midnight Oil for you and they will buy you drinks all night long! The Museum Of Sex in the Chelsea is a lot of fun, as is the Gugenheim Museum. Little Italy is...well....little. Spoons has been there before, it sounds like, so you'll have a good guide. :) Have fun!

Been a while since I've set foot in the greatest city on Earth but once I get there, it'll come back to me. Like riding a bike

Hehe, they have bubble tea places around where I live...yummy drinks, but I hate the tapaoica balls that are in a lot of them. Thanks for all the recommendations! :)

What are you and CS looking to do? Museums, touristy stuff, broadway, or shopping?

He's mainly the one who's planning the day out, but I know we're both looking for interesting places to go and look around....which could include museums. I dislike super tourist-y spots, so we'll probably avoid them. I've never been to NYC before, so whatever we do I'm looking forward to it.

I think a few people already mentioned the Gugenheim, Soho, Museum of Modern Art.

It's just a LOT of things you can do you might want to kinda map it out and see what things are close to each other. You don't want to have to go from downtown to uptown and back and just waste time. Like the Guggenheim is 89th Street I believe. SOHO is downtown near Canal Street over 70 something blocks. It's best to nail down what you kinda want to see.

One other strong recommendation I will make, if you have a whole day to spend there, is the Bronx Zoo. It's one of the best in the nation.

Although I'm not sure if we'll have time, I would LOVE to go to the zoo....so far we've gone to the National Zoo and the Philadelphia Zoo together, the Bronx Zoo would be a great one to add to the list :)

Erz, we're definitely going to map things out....I'm not a fan of chaotic wandering back and forth in a big city that I've never been to lol. All you guys have given some great ideas, we'll just have to narrow down where to go and plan it all out. :)

Also, for Chinatown, does anyone have any specific restaurant recommendations? I love Chinese, but of course any Chinatown is gonna have a lot of crappy places to eat mixed in with the good ones.

head over to Mott street.... you'll find lots of places to eat... all great meals at decent prices.

Get a genuine new york city hot dog as well.

Ya know, the ones that stay in hot grease all afternoon but taste oh so good.

I like Times Square. But thats probably because I rarely go to the city.:o

If you plan to hit an art museum, I would say the Whitney. The Biennial should still be up, and I've heard good things about it this year (hope to go see it again this weekend). If not, MoMA is always a safe bet.
