The Black Panther Box Office Speculation Thread - Part 1

Many people say there isn't an audience for black superheroes and they might have a point. There hasn't been a mega-successful black superhero movie without Will Smith.

But the Marvel Cinematic Universe is more popular than ever. Even the B-list GotG made over 700 m worldwide.

So will Black Panther reach the heights of the Thor and Captain America sequels? Will if flop? Or fall somewhere inbetween?

$216 million OW. We knew this was going to open big but wow, nice job BP.

And the 3 day will be one of the biggest ever too. IW will be putting together Avengers, Black Panther, Spider-man, Guardians and much more. Really could be off the charts especially with a heavy Wakandan influence while BP is still in cinemas. I could see BP getting a late revival when IW comes out.

5th biggest 4-day OW in history.

Only The Force Awakens, The Last Jedi, Jurassic World and The Avengers are higher.

BP has a shot at 550 m DOM..

Which would beat TDK and Rogue One.

Insanity.

Saw it last night and this film deserves all the money and praise it's getting. So many moments the theater I was in erupted in laughter and several times ore than half the theater started clapping too. It's just an amazing movie.

It was truly great to see the diversity in the theater I was in, but even more so to see African-American families bringing their children to see this film. The look on all of the kids faces after the movie was done brought the biggest smile to my face.

It's this type of quality film making that makes me proud to be such a huge Marvel fan.

I honestly can not wait to go see this movie again!

Saturday writethru, after Friday, 8:58PM: By the time the four-day President’s Day holiday stretch ends, Black Panther will have surpassed many of Marvel’s mightiest on the all-time domestic B.O. openers chart. Black Panther is now looking at the 6th best opening of all-time on a 3-day-basis with an estimated $185.8M per industry projections and a mind-blowing $213M over four days.

1..) Black Panther (DIS), 4,020 theaters / $76.6M Fri (includes $25.2M in previews) /3-day: $185.8M /4-day: $213M/Wk 1

So this is making a billion? What kind of legs would it have for it not to considering the large opening?

We don't know what legs it needs because we don't have enough info on the OS numbers yet. There's a real possibility now that it could make a billion though.

We'll have to wait for the OS weekend number to see where it stands there. The numbers we've seen so far have been good though. It also doesn't open in China until 3 weeks from now (March 9th) so that's another piece of the puzzle we're still missing.

A $Billion? I can't believe we're having this conversation; as in its an actual possibility for this film to reach that figure.

Always bet on black.....panther.

This thing is a monster. I knew it’d be big (I mean come on, who didnt) but the fact that it’s going to open that high is just absolutely nuts.

I thought it was Madness. I was a fool. I love being wrong for this. Now, I really can't wait for Infinity War

Well as long as BP passes $843M WW then the 6 films(so far) of Phase 3 will exceed the six of Phase 2. That seems a very safe bet(all 3 MCU films last year beat that mark) and thus the MCU phases will keep increasing in $, which keeps the economic health of the franchise beyond question.

Update on OS markets:

‘Black Panther’ Rises To $82M Through Friday; $150M+ Weekend In Sight – International Box Office

UPDATE, SATURDAY: Disney/Marvel’s Black Panther is on a powerhouse run at the international box office as it climbs to $81.5M through Friday. It is now outperforming not only Ant-Man, Guardians Of The Galaxy and Doctor Strange, but Thor: Ragnarok and is on its way to besting all pre-weekend projections. It should cross $150M in 48 markets through Sunday.

The Ryan Coogler-helmed superhero movie is overperforming in the UK and Korea, and doing bang-up business in the emerging South East Asia markets as we’ve seen throughout the past few days.

The UK gross through Friday is $14.4M while Korea is hot on its heels at $14.3M. With figures added from local reporting outlet Kobiz, Korea through Saturday has grossed over $20M.

The current frame also marks the start of the Chinese Lunar New Year period and while Black Panther couldn’t pounce into the Middle Kingdom (and who would want to be trying to compete with the action there as Monster Hunt 2 got off with $145M in just two days?), the holiday is helping spin turnstiles in other Asian hubs.

That's very good. This is what they were saying a few days ago:

Should Black Panther open to $120M at the overseas box office (where it’s playing in 70% of all offshore markets this weekend), it would be considered a huge start for a deeper Marvel universe character, surpassing the international starts of Ant-Man ($73M) and Guardians of the Galaxy ($80M).

Holy cow! If the overseas BO is keeping up with Thor Ragnarok, that's a freaking amazing sign! If it can manage decent legs, 1 billion WW... Just absolutely fan-freaking-tastic!!

I definitely under-estimated the opening weekend. I was expecting Winter Soldier numbers and Black Panther's opening weekend is going to almost double TWS. Both times I've gone to the theater the parking lot was stuffed, the lines for concessions were a mile long and my IMAX 2D showings were filled to capacity. I hate huge crowds because there's always more of a chance that we'll get some loud knuckleheads in the theater but both times the crowds have been great. Before and after the movie I'm seeing lines of people waiting to take their picture in front of the Black Panther marquee lol. I've never seen anything like it.

I think the movie will be financially successful in the States than the international market but it can go the other war round.

The only market left now is China which will be interesting to look at.

Wow!!! Marvel (and the BP cast) should be proud!! I'm happy for them.

This movie is a box office monster and it deserves every penny it’s going to make! Loved the movie and I’m loving its getting the praise it deserves!

Heh. This question answered with authority!

Less than two hours until my Black Panther date with the hubs! So excited!

BP is not just a movie, but a major event.
