t isn't over, guys. Remember, a storm is coming.
The Dark Knight Rises entered 2012 as the years most anticipated film. The incredible amount of good will created by the previous films enormous success makes it's sequel easily the years most talked about film. New pictures and trailers were front page news at the time of release. Months away from it's opening, awareness and anticipation for TDKR tops most movies opening on the nearest weekend. TDKR enters the summer positioned towards the end, with an incredible amount of fans just passing the time until it opens, aware that the real must see film of the years is still months away, despite mega opening of HUNGER GAMES and Avengers. Summer begins with the Avengers, and coincidentally, the release of a new Batman trailer. The trailer garners millions of views within hours, becomes the primary headline on Yahoo.com's front page for the day, and makes TDKR a popular topic on social networks once again displaying the already enormous awareness and excitement surrounding the film. Millions of fans truly eat up literally every bit of info that is released.
The Avengers starts the summer as a slam dunk with audiences and at the box office, but afterwardsthings slow. In the rest of May, Battleship and Men In Black 3 fail to top 200 million. Snow White and Prometheus become crowd pleasing word of mouth hit in the mid 200 range. Brave and Madagascar both do well with children, but June ends without a 300 million grosser, or 100 million opening, since The Avengers, 2 months earlier. The Amazing Spider-man is an under performer, failing to open over 100 or to top 250 million total. In short, the marketplace post Avengers leading up TDKR opening is relatively uneventful. All the while, the buzz surrounding TDKR begins to reach a fever pitch as marketing begins to pick up. By mid July, a poll asking "what is the best movie of the summer: A. Avengers B. Men In Black C. Snow White D. Spiderman E. The Dark Knight Rises (probably)" is released, with option E winning an overwhelming share of the vote. While The Dark Knight was highly anticipated in 2008, opening weekend expectations only began to rise above the the 120ish limit in the final few days preceding its opening, primarily due to the incredible amount of advance sell outs. This time, there is no denying the enormous expectations, and a Phantom Menace/Matrix Reloaded type of all out media frenzy ignites. Reviews comeback overwhelming positive, and DARK KNIGHT RISES tickets become harder to find than gold. Theaters begin clearing out older underperforming movies to make way for what is truly one of the most anticipated movies of all time. Sick days and vacation time use spike for Friday, July 20th. Preparing for The Dark Knight Rises midnight premiere becomes one of the most popular crazes of the summer. Finally, TDKR bows in nearly 4,700 theaters, destroying the previous record, and including a record number of IMAX theaters. It also breaks the record for screens held. In short, truly one of the most anticipated films of all time is here. The movie event of the century is upon us. Batmania is here once again.
Midnight screenings: 45 million (Potter got 43 last summer, I expect the Bat to top it)
Friday: 62 million (TDK got 50 in 08 - 4 years of inflation, IMAX, + a slight boost in ticket sales = 62. TDK has less in Midnights, but I honestly expect TDKR to sell out just about everywhere, making steam blown off earlier in the day irrelevant).
Opening day: 107 million (destroys previous record of 91 million)
Saturday: 58 million -8% from true Day gross, -47% from total - HP7 fell 53% - New Saturday record, breaking the 5 year old held by Spider-man 3
Saturday: 51 million -12% - new Sunday record, defeats TDK's from 2008.
Opening weekend: 216 million - Destroys the opening weekend record.
Mon: 27m -47%
Tues: 23.7m -12%
Wed: 21.3m -10%
Thurs: 20.0 -7%
Weekdays: 92 million
2nd Weekend: 93 million - 57% (previous record: 75m, Avatar)
10 day total: 401 million (previous record: 313 - TDK)
Weekdays: 51.5 - 45%
3rd weekend: 49.5 million - 47% (Bourne and Total Recall bite into audience, but Batman still tops both).
17 day total: 502 million
Weekdays: 31m - 40%
4th weekend: 33m - 35%
24 Day Total: 566m
From this weekend, TDKR gets a 3.8 multipler for the rest of its run, pushing it into the 690's. W.B. Push the film over the 700m mark, making its far and away the second biggest domestic hit of all time. Its 700 total represents a 3.24 multiplier from its enormous opening weekend.
Yes, there is a storm coming, indeed. The Dark Knight will rise, while records fall.
When your records are in ASHES, you will have my permission to die.
