Riddle #24:

1
11
21
1211
111221
312211

What's the next number in the sequence?

Answered: 13112221
If you say the digits in each number, it describes the digits of the number above it.

1
11 one-one
21 two-ones
1211 one-two-two-ones
111221 one-one-one-two-two-ones
312211 three-ones-two-twos-one-one

What the hell was the answer to the penny one?
Something that could never work in real life unless you knew the relative weights of each type of coin. It only works if you apply some theoretical number. Kind of weak, in that respect. :/

Riddle #25

If you look at the numbers on my face you won't find 13 any place.

:D

Ok, got it. I knew it had something to do with asking about the other person.

You ask the first guard 'What will the other guard say is behind his door?' Whatever the answer is he gives is what is behind the first guard's door. (If the first guard says death, the first guard is actually guarding the door to death.) So do the opposite of what the guard says.

Why?
Let's say you choose to ask the guard guarding the door to paradise.
If this guard is the truth-teller, his answer will be paradise because the other guard will lie about guarding death.
If this guard is the liar, he will say paradise because he is lying about what the other guard will say (the other guard would tell the truth and say he is guarding death).

On the other hand, let's say you ask the guard guarding the door to death.
If this guard is the truth-teller, his answer will be death because the other guard will lie about guarding paradise.
If this guard is the liar, he will say death because he is lying about what the other guard will say (the other guard would tell the truth and say he is guarding paradise).

I"m sorry WHAT?!?

Oh right, 1 from the first bag, 2 from the 2nd, etc...

I"m sorry WHAT?!?

Example answer: Which door will the other guard tell me you guard? (or Which door will the other guard tell me leads to paradise?)

The truth teller will lead you to the door of death, becaue the liar will tell you the door that leads to death. The liar will lead you to the door of death because the truth teller would tell you the right door, and he has to lie. Thus, you pick the opposite door.

aaahhh got it

I"m sorry WHAT?!?

The trick is not to find out about the doors. It's finding out what the guards will say about the doors.

Let's say the doors and guards are numbered, just to make it easier to keep track. You pick door number 1 and ask guard 1: "What will the guard 2 say is behind the door 2?"

If guard 2 is the truth-teller, he would honestly say what is behind his door. So if paradise is behind his door, guard 2 would say paradise. But, if guard 2 is the truth-teller, that means guard 1, the guard you asked the question, is the liar. He knows that guard 2 will speak the truth and say paradise, so guard 1 has to lie and say "Death."

Similarly, if guard 2 is the truth-teller and behind his door is death, he would honestly say "Death is behind my door". Guard 1, the liar you are talking to, knows this and would lie, saying "Paradise is behind his door."

In either case, you do the opposite of what Guard 1 says. If he says "Death", then paradise is behind door 2. If Guard 1 says "Paradise", then death is behind door 2.

Now let's say you asked the question to guard 1, but this time guard 2 is the liar. So, if paradise is behind door 2, guard 2 would lie and say death. Guard 1, who you asked, knows this and tells the truth, saying "Death" because that's what guard 2 would say.

Similarly, if guars 2 is the liar and behind his door is death, he would lie and say "Paradise is behind my door." Guard 1, the truth-teller you are talking to, knows this and would tell the truth, saying "Paradise" because that's what the lying guard 2 would say.

In either of these two cases, you do the opposite of what Guard 1 says. If he says "Death", then paradise is behind door 2. If Guard 1 says "Paradise", then death is behind door 2.

So, no matter which you ask, or what combination of door and guard you have, always do the opposite of what the guard says.

Or, another way to look at it, by asking about the other guard, the guard you are talking to will always tell you what is behind his door.
