THE CINEMA LOUNGE

The Substance

One of the best films of the year for me. Margaret Qualley has beautiful psychotic eyes. Demi Moore has always been a good actress, but she has mostly been a miss when choosing material, but this was aces. Coralie Fargeat puts to shame a lot of them so called genre directors working today. I’ve said it before and long ago, but she and Julia Ducournau can go toe to toe with ANY director working today and often times it wouldn’t even close.

In honor of Kris Kristofferson… a mention of Criterion’s 219-minute version of Heaven’s Gate — the infamous epic Hollywood western, which is actually best approached as a “European art film.”

So I am a suckered for a good Presidential Biopic. One that I just never got around to was LBJ, starring Woody Harrelson as LBJ and directed by Rob Reiner. So I watched thay tonight after kids went to bed. I thought this was a good movie, but it is only 90mins. That I thought was odd, but even more baffling to me once it ended. Cause it ends with the Civil Rights Act of 64 passing. Then in the text of what happened later, it outlines how he won the 64 election by a landslide, created a lotnof programs and accomplishments, and ultimately lost support cause of Vietnam and other factors. I was like, this was only 90 mins yall. Instead of stopping at 90 mins, include that other stuff in the text crawl into like another hour of movie, and then this could have been like a definitive character study of the man. As it stands, it's a decent biopic. But not great. This had more potential though

I'm glad letterboxd exists because I remember watching it and giving it a review but I don't remember what I thought of it... and yep. lol

It's so weird that Hulu doesn't support Dolby Vision and Atmos but Disney+ does and considering most of their Hulu originals are also on Disney+ it just makes the Hulu app that much more useless.

Killer Heat

A solid detective movie with JGL as the lead. Man, this only made me miss JGL in more mainstream type flicks. I’m hoping Bald Nolan can give him a lead next time. Not bad when it comes to amazon originals, but that ain’t saying much either. Eh. Solid.
