Sci Fi Thriller "God Particle"
We hear that Paramount Pictures has picked up a script called God Particle for J.J. Abrams's Bad Robot to produce from Oren Uziel — the same screenwriter who penned the macabre zombies, vampires, and humans-versus-invading-aliens action-comedy The Kitchen Sink for Sony Pictures.
A rep for the director declined comment, and while details are scant, the logline seems classic Abrams bait: After a physics experiment with a large hadron accelerator causes the Earth to seemingly vanish completely, the terrified crew of an orbiting American space station is left floating in the middle of now-even-more-empty space. When a European spacecraft appears on their radar, the Americans must determine whether it’s their salvation, or a harbinger of doom.

Still, don’t let your heart beat too fast, for based on what else our spies tell us, it seems unlikely that Abrams would direct God Particle. Paramount’s plan is to shoot the whole film for under $5 million; that means it's likely to be released by its newfound Insurge Pictures micro-budget division, which launched in 2010. Of course, Paramount already knew a bit about wringing big profits from anorexic budgets before then: Its Paranormal Activity franchise has grossed $575 million worldwide from three films whose budgets, even when added all together, don’t even crack $9 million. (Naturally, a fourth is on the way.)

Other studios have been quick to embrace the “nothing ventured, everything gained” model: This year's CBS Films Daniel Radcliffe thriller The Woman in Black, for example, was made for $13 million, but cost just $3 million to acquire and $14 million to market and distribute in the U.S. It went on to make $127 million worldwide. Likewise, Fox's Chronicle cost just $22 million to make and has grossed $126 million worldwide.

But the first film released under the Insurge label, this year’s The Devil Inside, was a truly execrable piece of filmmaking whose only impressive achievement is that despite being made for $1 million, it went on to gross $101 million worldwide. (It is the rare film to receive a CinemaScore of F — almost none do — and even rarer for becoming a hit nonetheless.) Hopefully, the involvement of Abrams’s Bad Robot won’t just guarantee God Particle a ridiculous profit margin should it get made, but also ensure some sort of quality control.

That was serendipitous. I was watching "Angels and Demons" and the part where they talk about the "God Particle" popped up while I was reading the title of this film.

Sounds like a great concept, though it seems more in line with an Outer Limits episode lol.

astronauts in space and the Earth vanishing almost sounds reminiscent of Odyssey 5...

Sounds pretty cool. It's a terrifying concept when you actually stop and think about it. Hopefully the script does the concept justice.

Gotta love Abrams and Hollywood's grasp of science

Sounds an interesting concept, I would imagine it would need a bigger budget than what was quoted in the article though, not huge but bigger than $5 million.

Well, you can't say "it's been done before." Except in fan fiction and cheap sci-fi tv.

I was on board with this til I saw that it was low budget. Meh. Maybe it'll still be good.

Well they never said it'll be found footage though.

'God Particle' believes in newbie helmer - Up-and-comer will direct buzzy sci-fi thriller for Paramount Insurge

Paramount and Bad Robot have tapped Julius Onah to helm "God Particle," one of the more buzzed-about open directing assignments in town.

Story follows an American space station crew left abandoned after a problem with a Hadron accelerator causes Earth to vanish entirely.

Oren Uziel penned the script and J.J. Abrams will produce. Film will be developed through Paramount InSurge, meaning it will be shot at around a $5-10 million budget.

Given the secrecy and Abrams' attachment, every agency was hustling to set up an up-and-coming director.

The project marks the first major film for the CAA-repped Onah, who had previously made a name for himself with his short films such as "Big Man" and "Little Girl Blue."

Abrams isn't afraid to giving a relatively unknown director an opportunity to break out: Matt Reeves was best known as a writer on the TV show "Felicity" before Abrams tapped him to direct Paramount's "Cloverfield," which went on to make $168 million at the worldwide B.O.

This movie sounds interesting, but it will contribute to the stupid term "god particle" never going away, which it needs to.

I actually really like that this is intended as as a smaller film. Really the effects involved can be pulled fairly cheap if they think it through the right way, especially designing the space station in a way that woul let them have artifical gravity like in 2001, saves on having to do floating effects.

Sounds interesting! I just hope they don't go for the ersatz science thing and say 'the god particle is an attempt to find god'!

‘Star Trek Beyond’ Scribe to Rewrite ‘God Particle’ for Bad Robot, Paramount (Exclusive)
Doug Jung is coming on to revise Oren Uziel’s original screenplay, which will be directed by Julius Onah

After writing “Star Trek Beyond” for Paramount and J.J. Abrams‘ Bad Robot, Doug Jung is being hired to rewrite “God Particle” for the two companies, TheWrap has learned.

Julius Onah is attached to direct the modestly-budgeted sci-fi thriller, while Abrams will produce with his Bad Robot partner Bryan Burk. Oren Uziel wrote the original screenplay.

“God Particle” follows an American space station crew who, believing they have destroyed Earth via a Hadron accelerator, allow the crew of hostile nations to board their ship, with disastrous results.

Boy the movie was pretty much set, and then disappeared. I'm glad that it's back on track.

God Particle, an original science fiction feature, will hit theaters February 24, 2017

Paramount Pictures has set a February 24, 2017 release for the original Bad Robot feature God Particle. The microbudgeted science fiction tale was first announced back in 2012.

The plot of God Particle is said to revolve around an American space station that, after an accident with a particle accelerator, suddenly finds that Earth has vanished altogether. Things get stranger when they then they pick up traces of another space station nearby.
In physics, the “God Particle” is a nickname given to the hypothetical Higgs boson, a particle upon which much of our understanding of quantum physics is based. The world’s largest particle accelerator, the Large Hadron Collider, was built in Geneva, Switzerland in an attempt to prove the Higgs boson’s existence.
God Particle will be directed by Julius Onah (The Girl is in Trouble). Originally scripted by Freaks of Nature and 22 Jump Street scribe Oren Uziel, God Particle was since rewritten by Star Beyond‘s Doug Jung.
God Particle is the first film to claim that February 24, 2017 date. The film will arrive one week after both Bad Boys 3 and The Maze Runner: The Death Cure and one week before 20th Century Fox’s still-untitled third Wolverine film.

‘Cloverfield 3’ Teased By JJ Abrams, Could It Be ‘God Particle’?
Peter Sciretta said:
Is it possible that God Particle could be Cloverfield 3? Might God Particle provide an explanation for the Cloverfield monster and the possible chemical attacks in the United States? Could it be the “Cloverfield Particle”? Or maybe “Space Shuttle Cloverfield”? Seems unlikely as Abrams seems to suggest a third Cloverfield movie would be determined after the release of 10m Cloverfield Lane. God Particle already has a release date and is gearing to begin production. But if it is Cloverfield 3, it seems like JJ Abrams and Bad Robot have been planning this out for a while now, and it could be rather cool.

David Oyelowo and Gugu Mbatha-Raw will star in J.J. Abrams' 'God Particle' (EXCLUSIVE) http://bit.ly/1U27wIx

Following the success of “10 Cloverfield Lane,” Paramount is moving quickly on another J.J. Abrams-produced property with David Oyelowo and Gugu Mbatha-Raw in negotiations to star in the sci-fi thriller “God Particle.”

Julius Onah is directing the film with Abrams producing through his Bad Robot banner, along with Bryan Burke.
Originally set up at Paramount InSurge before its shuttering, the long-in-development pic takes place in the near future. It centers on a team of astronauts who make a terrifying discovery that challenges all they know about the fabric of reality, as they desperately fight for their survival.
The film will hit theaters on Feb. 24, 2017, with production scheduled to start sometime in the second quarter.

YES! I love it. Oyewolo deserves a potential genre hit like 10CL was.
