The Curious Case of Spider-Man & Hulk Rights (Or Keep Hope Alive That the Rights Will Revert)

It's a different deal and technically they only have distribution rights not the actual rights to the character Disney can make a movie when ever....but universal decides how it's distributed

If Disney could be convinced that Hulk was a billion dollar grossing franchise, I imagine they would just let Universal distribute the film. They just made two Spider-Man films for Sony, essentially. But after two box office disappointments, including one in the MCU, there just doesn't seem to be a lot of motivation there. Disney probably figures why pay for a Hulk film for Universal to distribute when they can just make a Doctor Strange or whomever film and not have to give Universal squat. Plus, unlike Sony where they had to make that deal to use Spidey at all, Disney can use Hulk whenever they want in a teamup or someone else's film.

Disney is gonna busy with their Marvel slate for the next three years (just one of many companies they own right now), while Sony is gonna be stubborn for awhile, it would take a while before they realize that they need Marvel Studios again.

That's a good point. No Hulk movie has ever done over 300MM worldwide. There's no guarantee they will ever make it big at the BO, though I do think a TIH 2 with Red Hulk, She Hulk, Abomination, and introducing Wolverine would make major bank, i.e. 700MM+.

The only hope fans have that Disney will buy Universal out is because they are looking to have all the Marvel Studios movies streaming on Disney+. Disney+ is the most important launch in the company's history according to Iger so we have to believe they really want Disney+ to be the house of all things Marvel (with Hulu complimenting with the R rated affairs).

While they can just buy the streaming rights, there's a chance they may try and acquire the whole rights that Universal has at the same time.

Just some random thoughts pertaining to IP's that may be a long-shot at happening if Spider-Man is not made at Marvel Studio's:

*Ant Man 3 I speculated here is long shot at happening if a slot opens in place of Spiderman: Ant-Man threequel title speculation Kit Harrington I can see as maybe the character Black Knight who was loosely rumored for the Captain Britain movie (before Fox purchase) and later rumored for Ant Man 3 and perhaps appearing in Avengers and Eternals movies afterwards. Of course, even if Ant-Man 3 is made though I think this character appearing is unlikely.

*Other options if Marvel is unable to work something out with Sony perhaps could be working something out with Universal. Someone suggested maybe something quietly already has been done with the She-Hulk announcement. A Bruce Banner Hulk film would be fun to see and his cousin could show up here as well...

*Or, another option is an R-Rated Deadpool movie with Ryan Reynolds dressed as Spider-Man reminiscent of that comic where Deadpool appears in a parody of Spider-Mans origin in Amazing Fantasy.

*Of course, the best best option though would be for Marvel and Sony to just work something out.

The MCU has made Hulk bigger and better to a lot of people. I have faith a new solo film can at least be more successfu(crtically and with movie audience) than ever before for a Hulk movie. Thor Ragnarok Hulk is probably the way to go than the mindless beast or Endgame professor

<shrug> It's honesty what I would do. I know people who bought a whole PS4 just for that Spider-man game, and its still the only game they have for it (although they say they plan to buy more).
That's exactly what I did. Bought it to play Spider-Man and sold my PlayStation pro after I completed Spider-Man. Best game I've ever played.

Some of you aren't even gamers but bought a new console for Spidey? Fan dedication right there!

I am a gamer but only have an Xbox right now. I myself have considered many times in getting a PS4 again mainly for that game!

I don have a problem with Watts being out. Homecoming and FFH from a cinematography stand point is bland and by the numbers.

Directors are well known in Hollywood for never ever having any influence on the choice of or the work done by cinematographers. :o

My favorite characters are the X-Men and we X-Men fans pretty much suffered with no video-games and merchandise for years. Marvel made an effort to not make X-Men a top priority in all medias. So yeah it does suck when there are divisions between studios on characters. I hope Marvel doesn't ignore Spiderman like they did the X-Men and F4.

I think no matter what deal Disney offered SONY they would have still turned it down. I feel SONY feels the general public sees Home Coming and FFH as Marvel Studios titles NOT SONY titles, plus with Morbuis coming they want to stand on their own.

Let's say SONY agreed to 25% of future Spidey and spinoff films. What about the other stuff? Would Home Coming and FFH be available on Disney+? Would SONY Spiderverse TV shows be under Disney+? Is SONY starting their own streaming services? Lots of questions.

I really think no expert out there really knows what exactly is going on. The Split caught everybody by surprise.

If they really are fighting over John watts out of spite it's really over for the near future lol
