Interesting Superman designs, but I still think the classic costume is, and will always be the best.

Yes Wild child as I understand it Conner Kent and Bart are back and Bart is I guess regular age. I don't know how or anything though.

the undies have been a part of superman since either one of us or our parents were born (unless you are 70 years old, in which case, my mistake).

there is no purpose, yes, but it is trademark. when you were a kid, and you dressed up as a superhero, you would would put a towel around your neck, and put underwear over your pants. that IS the superhero look. that IS superman. and you wanna take that away from him?

ask a 6 year old to draw superman, and ask a well established comic book artist to draw superman. they will draw the same exact costume.

the underwear have been there for 70 years, never changed across many many media. I'm sorry, i'm don't think it is anyway near necessary now to change it for the MTV generation. while I didn't like SR, it showed that the underwear still works, because it is done in a non-distracting way.

he doesn't really need a cape, should we get rid of that? the glasses disguise is dumb, we should give him a mask. he is not relatable, so lets make him human that jor-el gives his powers to. the red and blue are cheesy, lets make him all black. slippery slope.

now all this arguement is for the underwear. while i obviously want the trunks, there's nothing with not wanting them. its' an opinion. However, it personally IRKS me when people call them silly, or panties or manies, or whatever other names they come up with. it is as much a part of the character as the cape and the glasses.

I get your slippery sloap deal and somewhat agree. However, Clark will be himself with or without all that stuff. As for comparing it to the cape the cape adds looks cool and adds a regal qualit IMO the Undies add nothing at all. When I dressed up as supes I didn't put my underoos on outside of my pants as a 5 year old I would have recognized that as silly and making me look less powerful and I was Superman after all

whatever works for you. the underwear over pants is the symbol of superman, nothing to do with his power level. the undies don't don't do anything literally with the character, but it has been part of who he is since his commencement. its not about functionality, it's IS superman. everything else is a redesign.

again, nothing worng with not wanting them. I just dont' like the name-calling. it's a tradition and its an important part of the character. it's a matter of respect i suppose.

this is obviously a redesign thread, so changes are a welcomed. none of the redesigns look like superman to me. even if they have all teh "essences", they are great redesigns, but they look like other characters from krypton.

Not as crazy about this Supes design as others (although it has some really good qualities) by derrickfish on DA

However it's the artist comments on why he redesigns supes it's probably the best explanation i've ever heard:

This is just a colored sketch I did for fun. I have a kinda mild obsession with redesigning certain super hero costumes and Superman in particular.

I love drawing Supes, and love his basic costume, but I honestly think that that love of the design comes out of nostalgia and it's status as an icon more than it does out of the actual design itself. It's kinda like the Coca Cola logo. It's not that it's PERFECT, but that it's been so big for so long that it's somewhat enshrined in our minds as untouchable. The Coke logo, if you really think about it, is antiquated, clumsy and tricky to read. If you were a designer pitching that logo design to a client in modern America in some alternate reality where Coca Cola never existed, I'm willing to be it would be shot down in the first round of designs. Frankly, I think the same thing is true of Superman's costume.

Not that I'm saying that I've topped it... but for some reason, I love trying. Go fig.

yes...yes...YES. That is EXACTLY what i'm saying.

there is no purpose for the trunks. but it's the total image. none of the other redesigns look like superman even if the essence is there. if you were to create superman, you would never give him trunks. but it is part of what makes him who he is.

but you understand where i'm coming from right? the coke won't taste any different if they change the logo. so WHY change it? the underwear doesn't define superman, so why change it?

it's a matter of where you draw the line i suppose. i don't think it's that small or silly of an aspect, because it is has been the subject of much debate. so clearly it's not a small issue.

you said you wouldn't want get rid of the cape. just like that, when someone tells me they want to get rid of the trunks, it's as if someone told you to get rid of the cape. means the same thing to me. a guy wearing a cape is very very goofy, (and obnoxious) too if you think about it.
