The Defenders The Defenders General Discussion Thread

I'm really hoping they lose the defenders name before this one gets into production . Heroes for hire would have been better....but if they want them to be a team and not for profit.....then honestly Marvel Knights is the way to go

Heroes for Hire makes them sound like a mercenary group, and would be especially odd for Daredevil. Marvel Knights makes no in-setting sense. So, no, Defenders is about as good as you'll get.

I'm still hoping for Dr strange and hulk......namor. ... an actual defenders movie

Even if Marvel was able to work out whatever complications exist surrounding the Namor rights, any big screen movie involving those three characters would likely be released under "The Avengers" banner. That's Marvel's cinematic superhero team up brand, and they wouldn't launch another team of world saving powerhouses under a similar sounding name.

"The Defenders" works on a lot of levels. It is a longtime established Marvel brand, three of the four Netflix characters have spent time on the squad, and the name is both in contrast to yet similar to that of the squad on film. Each Marvel team fills a different niche:

Avengers - Earth based squad designed for world saving.

Guardians - Space based team dealing with intergalactic issues.

Defenders - NYC based squad of street level heroes

It's a smart repurposing of a team that unfortunately fell out of favor way too early.

I'm hoping to see Rachael Taylor actually suit up as Hellcat and join the Defenders in a nod to the comics, and not just be Jessica Jones' best friend and that's all she is.

Why would they need to be "launched"? They will be part of the MCU from the first episode.

You are misunderstanding my meaning. Yes everything is in the MCU but these heroes are unknown to the public in the MCU for the most part. Obviously something big is going to go down hence the need for the Defenders much like the Chitauri invasion launched the Avengers into the public eye within the MCU. So after the Defenders event will these heroes be launched into the MCU proper meaning will they be in contact with the Avengers and other big dogs or even make appearances in the movies? Besides the fallout from TWS on AoS nothing from the non-movie part of the MCU has had an effect on the MCU proper. Loeb made a comment recently that we shouldn't be expecting the Netflix characters to be crossing over to other properties anytime soon and I'm hoping that the Defenders event is received well and it launches them into the rest of the MCU not just their own pocket Netflix MCU

When should this premiere. Like 2017 right?

Hopefully in season two, other characters can join up like Moon Knight, Punisher, Cardiac, Misty Knight & Colleen Wing.

The latter two (or at least Misty) will probably appear on Iron Fist

I'm wondering what makes them assemble still in the first place.

Not sure about how Murdock will fit into the picture, but Rand, Jones and Cage will probably already have known each other quite well by the time the Defenders starts.

Oh yeah forgot about that. Those three will probably already know eachother and be the Heroes for Hire or something but then confront Daredevil and become The Defenders instead.

I think the Hand, and most likely Kingpin will be the main bad guys for the Defenders. It looks like Daredevil is setting up both and the Hand can easily be fit into Iron Fist's world. Luke Cage will probably be exploring levels of corruption with power through Seagate Prison's illegal experiments and his friend Willis Stryker's attempt to rise through the ranks of the underworld. With Jessica Jones, I'm not exactly sure because of her being a more recent character with not as extensive of a history as the other guys.

But I don't know if they'll all know each other before they meet up. I know Jessica and Luke will know each other, but I think everyone else will be a first time thing.

I could see this happening. Have Misty set up as a cop who quit the police force due to internal corruption and started her own investigation unit with her best friend Colleen. Colleen can be used to tie into Iron Fist really well, because of her familial samurai ties (I think her mother had something to do with that) which could be tied to the Hand, and her father Lee Wing, who is a professor of oriental studies, and could be a great exposition character for the Iron Fist series. Even Misty can be a flexible character and show up on Luke Cage's series before meeting up with Danny in the Defenders.

I really want to see Misty Knight and Colleen Wing as the additional members of the team. They would be so badass.

That'd be great. People are always clamoring about how the MCU needs more female heroes. This'd be a perfect oppurtunity.

I think the chances are extremely high (as in 90%) for Misty while I think it's 50% for Colleen. The chances are a lot lower for Shang Chi and Moon Knight though....at least for season one.

Having both would mean that Marvel would cast a third Asian woman (after Ming Na and Chloe Bennett) and a third black woman into the MCU. However, Colleen would not only be the third Asian woman in the MCU, but also the third ass kicking Asian American female hero in the MCU. Whoever they cast as Misty will mean she would be the first black female superhero in the MCU because Zoe Saldana is playing an alien and Rosario Dawson is a regular human (also the chances of Monica Rambeau are slim, and we may not even have Shuri in BP).

As of right now I can see Cox's Matt Murdock being the leader if there is one. The gey is hitting it out of the park. Hope all the other leads are as successful.

I can totally see that. I can't wait until shots of all the heroes come out. Then we can manip posters.

After finishing Daredevil last night, it looks like The Hand is coming to destroy the city (like The League of Shadows in Batman Begins) and The Chaste is going to oppose it.

I theorize Stick is going to end up being the Nick Fury of the series, assembling the team of ninja (and Luke Cage) and preparing Matt for the fight of his life.

Then a DD-led Chaste - aka The Defenders, will battle an Elektra-led Hand in the miniseries.

That would actually make sense. Stick seems like the most qualified person to assemble them. He is the ine who always knew the war was coming and is trying to prepare for it.

Definitely seems like the Defenders will be a Hand vs. Chaste thing. Didn't think of that, I thought it would be more street level crime based than mystical...which I guess I was dumb for thinking it would be that simple lol. Marvel keeps upping the ante, I should stop underestimating them, they're not afraid to adapt stuff like this.

But I wonder how Luke Cage and Jessica Jones get brought into it? Iron Fist and Daredevil make sense given their connections, but those two seems sort of out of place with this unless Cage's connection with Danny brings him into it and by association with him, Jessica. Or maybe there will be more street level crime elements in it that involves them as well? Maybe her detective agency work with Cage helping her out gets them involved? Gotta see Jessica Jones.

Well it's unlikely the Jessica and Luke won't encounter some Hand soldiers and learnabout them so I assume their all connected through the common enemy hand.

The Hand is clearly behind Kingpin's real estate deals. Nobu was part of The Hand and I believe the child Stick killed had The Beast inside.

That would make sense. I mean the Kingpin and The Hand part. I have no idea what The Beast is.

So what year can we expect for this show to debut? 2017?

Personally, I'm hoping that if Jessica Jones, Iron Fist, and Luke Cage end up being successful shows as well that it would allow Marvel to extend the number of episodes left for this series (along with giving them a bigger production budget) so that we can really see these characters at their finest.

If the quality of this show ends up being anywhere as great as "Daredevil", then I'll be a happy camper. Frankly, i feel like this is one of those properties that could easily warrant a film treatment.

hopefully the writers/directors will be assembled in due fashion. The Daily Bugle should be a part of this.
