The Descent

No it's rated about where it should be,it's fame comes mainly from the fact it's BO record is untouchable

I would definetly agree with you if they trimmed off about an hour and a half of over ambitious visuals and pointless dialogue to the storyline, peter jackson has an xtremely talented eye for large scales but he let's his budget and ambition take over and it just overshadows every aspect of the movie.

how do you think it got those box office numbers, theres only so much marketing that can be done, it was made succesful from overated reviews and word of mouth

It got those numbers because people loved the movie and still do,that's not overrated it's mainstream popularity
It was a epic romantic movie set within one of the most famous disasters in history,it was bound to pique interest

right, but the original point was, for it's actual quality in filmmaking it was overated

If the film was lauded as a classic piece of filmmaking then you could claim it to be overrated,to be hugely successful b/c the general public loved it's epic romance is not overrated.
In fact overrated is a bogus term utilized way to often when some person whose view is in the minority wants to criticise a widely respected film or piece of music etc..

^ so your attacking my manner of stating an opinion now?

and yes i do believe it was hailed as a classic piece of filmmaking, at least the oscars seem to think so

Don't be so sensitive i was making a point in general that using the term overrated is often a way for someone to go against the grain,i mean it is in fact overrated in your opnion but you stated it more as a fact

The Oscars do not equate to a movie being a classic or great piece of cinema otherwise Raging Bull would have an oscar along with many other recognized classics that were overlooked

Titanic is 86% with a 7.7 average at Rotten tomatoes that collects reviews from all over the US.that's not a classic rating it's about what it was worth IMO

but you think LOTR was a classic masterpiece right?

Yes as a whole trilogy i do although on it's own i don't think ROTK is a masterpiece

Yes I am kinda late...but I just seen this yesterday and I thought it was a great horror movie that I haven't seen a great horror movies in years...and those movies I can tell whats going to happen next without even seeing the movie before....This can't be applied to the Descent...everything was dark in the movie because of the cave and brought out realism....I had suprisingly a huge audience in my theater
Wow..the first scene with the three family members in the car caught me way off guard....that but bad memories in that womans head stayed with her
Now the cave parts was really the meat of the movie....when they girls got lost and one was looking at every one with camera and the goblin or whatever was right their..that scared the hell out of the girl I was with and the whole theater...
The asian girl was the badass...but when she killed her friend I did not blame her...but for not sayin she made a mistake...Why do you creep up on someone who just was fighting everything that touched her?...at least say something first...or maybe she was too scared to say anything to attract more goblins....
as for the goblins.....those things where sinister canivores and was a clever new horror characters...I at first thougth they were the cave divers that came down their long time ago but I ruled that out...never know if they are lifeforms out their like that
an all girls movie....that is great and rewatchable...and a great horror movie to remember..I give it a 9/10..and will own it on DVD..I consider it a classic

I thought that too, but didn't rule it out.

I finally got around to seeing it. Whats the big deal? I mean, its just your typical horror movie with a bit more violence and a bit less character development and plot. To compare it to Alien is absurd.

^ Because it doesn't rely on cheap violin stabs or horror cliche's to achieve its scares, it employs the same method's that the classic horrors of our time used, things such as atmosphere, practical rather than cg effects and a slow burner style rather than straight off the bat attempts to draw the audience

It wasn't nearly as violent as it could've been considering the subject matter, and it was fairly heavy on character development, especially for the two leads; the plot is effective in its simplicity, like TCM, Halloween, and many other horror films.

The undeserved praise Alien has been getting for decades is absurd.

so titanic is underated? theres nothing that seperates LOTR from any other epic movie it's about 2 hours too long and a stupidly large budget

Stupidly large budget...they spent under $100 mill per movie and years later movies that cost near $200 mill don't look as expensive.

There's nothing that seperates LOTR from any other epic movie other than its terrific and diverse ensamble of characters, each one of which has more depth than the lead in most films, its umatched blend of action, drama, and humor, the fact that it's 3 of the largest scaled films ever made (and not just from a technical standpoint, and there was very little dialogue that wasn't pushing the story and/or characters forward, atleast in the theatrical version) shot completely out of order and needing to be edited together coherently(and someone can sit around and bash how horrendous the editing is, but that would of course be much easier than actually having to structure it into 3 films), and its length is fine. They wouldn't have been able to do justice to a group of characters and a story that large without very lengthy running times.

^ each to their own...i found them long and boring, you obviously thought the length was necessary, did you think troy was too long?

Not really, it had its share of pretty significant flaws, but I was never bored.

Troy I never felt like I was watching a 3 hour movie, it paced itself nicely I never felt like any scenes could be cut to shorten it, I found each scene neccesary, LOTR i just felt alot of the movie could be cut and it wouldn't detract anything from the overall production and if anything would help the movie flow better instead of being plot, tension builder, big epic battle and than back to the plot again waiting for something significant to occur...this is my feelings and from the abundance who feel this is the holy triology clearly don't share my opinions but when I watch a movie on such a large scale as this, I feel big portions of plot development/characterisation that could easily be compacted into shorter scenes would help maintain the excitement, instead of waiting and waiting for the next big moment

Just saw this tonight and WOW,best horror movie Ive seen although i wouldn't call it strictly a horror movie,it's more diverse than to really fit into a category IMO
The first hour is magnificent, the characters become like real ppl to you and when the cave in happened i was on the edge of my seat hoping Sarah would get pulled dout even though i knew she would,im claustrophobic so that added to the movie for me,those tight spaces were so intense and the acting was top class from all 6 ladies as they conveyed the terror of being trapped
watching them trying to climb their way out was enough of a nail biter as it was and all this before the crawlers arrive
What a ****ing hideous creation and the use of quick edits to portray the frenzied attacks was expertly done
The way the characters adapted was really well handled, with Juno being the standout as a badass, the image of her snapping the neck of the crawler was awesome as was the heroine shot of Sarah after she killed a male and female crawler and stood up out of the water like a warrior
The sadness when Sarah had to kill Beth was painful to watch
It truly felt like the women were in hell, the atmosphere was palpable
The last 20 minutes is some of the most intense film ive ever watched and it all was made that way by the first hour bothering to make the characters feel like real relatable ppl
The controversy over the ending is moot to me,the UK ending that i got was bleak and sad but had they left it with Sarah having escaped it leaves you conflicted because on one hand you were glad she survived but on the other you disliked her for what she did to Juno
Great movie(Also nice to see a good score used and no hip hop or metal stuff)

8.5/10

I saw the movie with the original ending if anyone wants to know what it was.

yeah thats the only ending i saw too....

Original ending:

Continues after the US ending. Turns out she's still in the cave, and you can hear the noises of the creatures echoing in the background.

No one makes it out alive.

Well thats good news. I really liked the idea of The Cave, but it was an awful movie.
