The Documentary Thread

Unforgivable Blackness: The Rise and Fall of Jack Johnson. 10/10. An amazing doc. with a length of almost 4 hours. A must watch for any fan of boxing, but it also deals with a lot things like race, poverty, the depression, racism and much more. It can be found on youtube.

I loved that doc. I thought for a while that they should make a film of it, but I don't think it could be as powerful as the documentary. Plus it would be pretty hard to find an actor to play Johnson.

The great white hope with James Earl Jones is based on the life of Jack Johnson. You should check it out.

I just finished watching Bobby Fischer Against the World, very interesting documentary about one of the famous world chess champions and are usually considered one of the best chess player of all time. I don't think it's the first documentary to dealt about him but nevertheless it paints a fascinating view on a man's life and his inner struggle and who really had nothing to live for than chess itself.

The documentary took an unexpected turn at the last act because Fischer himself did that in his life, at least it did for me since I didn't really pay any attention to the man before this. Still though very gripping, very well-put and it's not important whether you like chess beforehand since it's easy to delve in.

Just saw Being Elmo, sat with a smile and tears down my cheeks during the entire thing.
Feelgood movie of the upcoming decade!

^what is that even about? I think I saw it on Netflix, and I was a bit confused by how it's a documentary, so I skipped over it.

Its about the life of the puppeteer Kevin Clash who is the man who controls and voice the puppet Elmo of Sesame Street.
From his upbringing and interests in puppets and the muppets, to his career as Elmo and also what Elmo has meant to people/kids all over the world.
A pure feelgood american dream-story.

I'm looking forward to watching this doc. Also Paradise Lost 3: Purgatory.

Pearl Jam Twenty by Cameron Crowe is supposed to be good. At least my buddy told me so, he even said it's not just for Pearl Jam fans. I haven't seen it yet, but it is on Netflix.

He also did the voice for Splinter in the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movies.

But I am looking forward to seeing The Other F Word. Looks kinda cool, I used to play in a band a couple years ago, touring around and stuff. Now I have a kid and can kinda relate. Seems cool.

I finally got around to watching Exit Through The Gift Shop, and like most documentaries that I watch, I had to immediately do some follow ups on the movie. From what I kept seeing, just made the movie much more interesting, and I'm trying to put the pieces together, to see if the movie is hoax. I recommend that you guys watch it, and then follow up on it and come up with your own opinions.

I was massively disappointed by Paradise Lost 3. The first two thirds was just recaps from the previous films and the last third was about the trial this winter.

I'm not sure if this has been mentioned, or if it is more of a european based interest. But last years 'Senna' film, about the ill fated Formula 1 driver Ayrton Senna who tragically died at the height of his career, arguably one of the greatest drivers of all time.

And Louis Theroux has done some interesting documentaries, ranging from films about Religious cults, Gansta Rap, etc.

Also 'Ross Kemp on gangs' is great, where he travels all over the world and meets members from Crips, to Bloods, to White Power movements, and everything in between, some tense interviews with some of the high level leaders in in various gangs is brilliant.

_ Sounds interesting. I will look it up. Thanks for the info:up:

_ I don't know if I mentioned it before but I really enjoyed the Hughes Brother's "American Pimp." Maybe my favorite film of theirs and it also has an awesome soundtrack.

What about the Peter Jackson doc about the same case? Has anybody seen it yet?

I dont know if it has opened yet? I have more faith in that one though, it is also said while they were making it the actually found new evidence and witnesses targeting Terry Hobbs as the killer!

The part with the lone penguin wandering off into the abyss in Encounters is one of the most poignant and heartbreaking things I've ever seen in a documentary. Herzog is so great.

It was really sad:csad: I think for the most part that I actually prefer Herzog's docs than his films. That said I love some of his films too of course.

Haven't seen it yet, but I've heard that the doc "Forks over Knives" is really interesting.
