I think he needed to. This is a mainstream blockbuster movie, could even maybe offer some career redemption for Gibson. He's going to put everything he's got into this thing.

Australian Customs are the biggest set of c***s on the planet, no people have their heads hidden so far up their asses. Returning from Fiji, my sister had a severe seizure on the plane and they still stopped us for a full luggage search because we had a wooden souvenir. My sister is half conscious in a wheelchair, my ma is an emotional wreck and here's this jerk reciting all these laws and regulations. The souvenir was bloody lacquered and treated, so there wasn't any problem to begin with!

Sure, that doesn't excuse what Sly did, but about 9/10 Aussies have probably had bad dealings with those low, pathetic lifeforms.
