The Fountain

While I understand this movie won't appeal to everyone - visually, it seems like the kind of film you have to see on the big screen to really get the full impact.

Personally I am really looking forward to this.

This film looks...meh. The concept really interests me, but from what I've seen of trailers and such, it just looks bleh. Depressing.
Well, yeah, it probably would be depressing, seeing how its main premise is mortality. I'd be willing to bet that A LOT (read: most) people are not prepared to face that issue within themselves.

The trailer really speaks to me, and I can't wait to see it. My grandma died last year, and even though I didn't know her that well, her death still resonates with me because of the way it changed my mom. It was very hard, and very scary, to see how my mom treated my grandma during the last months of her life. (She couldn't talk anymore, and we weren't even sure if she knew she had visitors when we came to see her at the hospital.) My mom would pat her on the head and talk to her as if she was a toddler to get any sort of response, and all I could imagine was ME doing the same to my mom years from now. It was like the concept of aging and mortality just hit me over the head at once.

This is one of those movies where reviews just don't matter.

The film is beyond mere criticism. It's all about what you bring into it with you and what you take away from it when you leave.

I just got the graphic novel that Aronofsky put together when it didn't seem like the movie would pan out.

The premise is rather basic, as the premise for The Prestige was. Because of this, the power of the movie should stem from its execution and storytelling. The most interesting things about it are the Mayan stuff, as well as some Biblical stuff thrown in there. (Too bad you can't have a naked man and woman running around on screen as you can in a comic book..) I'm still wondering how the storylines work out...should be interesting to see how he puts this on film.

I'm still gonna see it. I think it looks fantastic. Now whether or not I'll feel the same way after seeing it is another story.

A bunch of new info... (Hate to do shameless self promo, but this is good stuff!)

Podcast with audio chats with Hugh Jackman, Rachel Weisz, and Darren Aronofsky, lots of good stuff. Starts at about 30:40.

And article about Aronofsky praising Jackman's work in The Fountain:

I've actually seen the film and it is hands-down AMAZING! You definitely need to see it opening day and, as people have said, it is an EXPERIENCE completely!

This is coming out in a couple of days... I hope people are still interested. I can't wait to see it myself!

When reviews agree with you, the critics are cool. When they don't, they're a-holes. As is the life of an internet fanboy. :o

You noticed.

Looks like a DVD rental unless acquaintances of mine see it and recommend it.

hows the score...is the music on point with this one? I want to hear something just as hauntingly beautiful as the music in Requiem.
Is this truly Darren Aronofsky's masterpeice?

Just got back and I only have two words: hauntingly brilliant.

It's really hard to explain. But, you have to let the film take you on an adventure.

We're Americans, we don't have time for that ****.:o

Amazing film. **** the reviews. This is a masterpiece and time will show this. Movies like this rarely get made. Thank god for Aronofsky.

I have to agree with Stewie.
I loved this movie though it's definately not for everyone and some people will be bored out of their minds.
It's absolutely gorgeous and thought provoking.
Weisz and Jackman are fantastic too.

Me and my sis saw it wednsday night.

I'm going to point out the good stuff first.

The score was fantastic, I absolutely adored it, best music I've heard all year, granted I haven't seen alot of movies. The movie looked breathtakingly beautiful at times and it's a very nice looking movie overall. Hugh Jackman is amazing and if their is any justice in the awards process he should be up for one but the movie is going to flop (already has really) so that won't be happening. Rachel Weisz was good but...

And here is the bad/not so good stuff:

...She didn't have much of a character, she was the hot ultra good, wise and understanding, dying of cancer, wife, like in a lifetime movie of the week. I just didn't feel like I knew the character or any others for that matter. I understand that the movie was about Jackman characters love and life and death and rebirth and excepting death but the movie seemed a little too focused on that and expected you too care a little too much not to flesh out izzy. I mean Jackman and weisz did well to make me care about some of the heart breaking scenes, I was touched more than once, but overall I can't overlook the feeling of just plain not knowing the wife character beyond she's hot nice and has cancer and thats what the movie is about! It's a love story, among other things ofcourse. Also everytime the movie switch to a bald Jackman doing yoga in a huge clear ball I had to hold back laughs. It looked ridiculous to me and I couldn't stand most of those scenes because of that, I just wanted to laugh and look away, it looked goofy as hell. The extreme close-ups for most of the film annoyed me and some of the dialogue was clunky. Overall I think that the movie's down fall lies in the fact that it is so pretenous and it isn't good enough to be. The movie isn't saying anything new about life and death and rebirth and it seems to believe that it is. I could easliy just pop in 2001 and get a better movie with simular themes.

Rating: 7 out of 10. Kinda disappointing.

It was interesting, but truth be told...a lot of people won't get it. Including myself. I shudder to think what Batman Year One would've consisted of.

That is such a snobbish attitude. "Mere criticism". Like you get something other people don't

It's funny how a critic can hail Spider-Man 2 as the best film ever and he's hailed a great critic. But more than likely that same critic gave this film a thumbs down, and suddenly he sucks donkey balls. Fickle indeed.

Couldn't you get the movie and just not like it?

^ So agreed Token, kind of like how everybody hated the thought of Daniel Craig as Bong and suddenly, everybody loves him and acts as if they did all along... actually, that's a different thing, isn't it? Haha.

Yeah, that is a possibility. But most people this weekend will say they didn't get it. And move on to Happy Feet, Casino Royale and Deck the Halls. ;)
