The Good, The Bad, and The Official Western Thread

I loved The Lone Ranger, but what surprised me the most was how similar it was to Jim Jarmusch's Dead Man. Besides the Depp connection, you have some nearly identical plot points. It would make one hell of a double feature.

Have you seen any of the 3 sequels? The original is of course the best (a true classic) the others go down in quality as they progress, but each are worth a look for one reason or another.

The first sequel - RETURN OF THE SEVEN - has only one actor from the original (Yul Brynner) but several characters from it. Chico (played by Horst Buchholz in the first movie, here by Julián Mateos) and all the other men from his village are captured for slave labor, his wife finds Chris (Brynner) and asks for help. Chris first recruits Vin (played by Steve McQueen in the first movie, here by Robert Fuller) and then others like Warren Oates and Claude Akins to help the villagers out.

The second sequel - GUNS OF THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN - now stars George Kennedy as Chris. He plays him basicly in name only, as they don't bother to have him dress in black or shave his head to make him look like Brynner. The other recruits in this one include Bernie Casey, Monte Markham, Joe Don Baker, and James Whitmore.

The third sequel - THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN RIDE - now has Lee Van Cleef as Chris. This one is a cross between Magnificent7 and the Dirty Dozen....most of his men on this mission are prisoners that are promised freedom if they survive.

Some trivia -

....in the sci fi movies WESTWORLD and FUTUREWORLD, Brynner plays a cowboy robot that is dressed just like he does in the Magnificent 7.

Robert Vaughn (Lee in the original seven) plays a character just like the character Lee in the sci fi movie BATTLE BEYOND THE STARS which is a futuristic remake of Magnificent Seven.

Robert Vaughn also was a re-occuring character of a circuit judge in the TV series THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN.

Uhm...NO !

You have the protagonist arriving on train, he "dies" and comes back, teams up with a Native American, crosses path with a cannibalistic villain, etc... There's even smaller stuff like John Reid wearing tribal face paint and Depp saying "stupid white man".

It is as similar as Inception is to the Matrix. Just a couple of plot elements here in there. The Lone Ranger is a bad acted (except William Fichtner), overbudgeted, boring block buster while Dead Man is a wonderful acid trip/anti western/rite of passage. When i watched the first trailer i thought the same thing, the hollywood version of dead man but when i watched the film, damn no.

You could add Rango for a triple bill:woot: I just realized Depp's been in 3 Westerns and I like all of them.

Sorry, Clint. My favorite Hollywood cowboy will always be Kilmer's Doc Holiday. Pure badass.

Kilmer was great, but this is my favorite Doc:

Out of the greatest experiences I had was seeing the Man Who Shot Liberty Valance at the local cinema.

Would anyone be down for a remake of WAR WAGON ala 3:10 TO YUMA?

Thank you, Figs:yay: It was a picture from Appaloosa.
